He felt the kick, but continued to frown at Sherry, tilting his head. "Then treat it like one.... or is it because you're looking down on me, now that you're no longer a trainee?"

"What?!" A look of genuine shock crossed her face. "No. That's not- I would never-"
She sighed. "Spars are supposed to help us improve. Not get us killed. The last one where I forgot that and let it become all about survival did nearly kill me."
She took a step forward, then another. "I assure you, Jake, I don't look down on you." She brought the blade of the glaive down again.

"You must have been really pathetic if you almost got killed."
No one asked you.
He held up the tonfas, runes glowing brightly. If she didn't take him seriously before, maybe this would make her think twice.
Shadowy tendrils formed from the blades, snaking towards the intermediate trainee. With time, she would find herself surrounded by them, as they protruded from the ground, the only illumination given by the glowing green orbs on them.

Those words stung, but Sherry didn't want to let him see that. "No, I just don't know when to stop. Maybe I'll show you the scar sometime." Even as she spoke, she watched the runes on his weapons begin to glow.
Sherry was genuinely surprised. She knew to expect something different the moment the runes glowed, but this was entirely new. She could see no way to counter it, but it did prevent her from attacking him. It didn't help that she didn't want to touch the strange things.
Armagnac raged in her head.

Seeing Sherry's confused expression, he smirked. Ha, it actually worked!
He took the opportunity to get in an attack, swinging the blades at her... only to end up missing.
Shut up.

Things began to fade and recede. Sherry had expected the worse, had received nothing. "What? Are you toying with me now?"
She adjusted the grip on her weapon, then took one large swing. "Because if you are, you can stop."

When the last of the illusion faded, he huffed. It seemed he had gotten caught in it too, and was shaking off one of the tendrils that clung to his leg. To be honest, he was still getting used to this attack, and when it backfired, he caught glimpses of it, rendering him immobile. Why he got caught in it this time, he wasn't sure. It always brought back unpleasant memories, like the first time he had first encountered these things.
He hadn't noticed that the illusion faded for Sherry also, until her weapon smacked him, making him stagger back, clutching his stomach. Coughing, he placed a hand on his knee as he steadied himself, looking up at Sherry.
"I'm not." In response, he lashed out with a blade, but still winded from her attack, it only managed to nick her FEAR shield.

He seemed a bit more worn out than she had thought he was. Armagnac grumbled pleasantly, reminding Sherry that they had gotten in a couple of good blows. She didn't look down on him, that was a fact, but she did have more experience.
"Good." She responded to his attack by swinging the staff end of her weapon at him again. "Because I need you to know two things. I don't look down on you, not for any reason. And just because I want even footing in a spar, I don't think it's a game."

Once again, Jake and Armagnac seemed to agree. They were both telling her to treat it like a real battle, with a real enemy. Sherry understood why but she still didn't agree. Not wholly. But if it was what they both wanted, what they both thought best...
"Fine." The blade came from the side, and the blow had a fair amount of weight behind it.

The attack made the last of his FEAR shield crumble, and he raised his hands in defeat. Even if he wanted to, he didn't have the strength to continue to fight, and Chester would probably only scold him.
"Congratulations. You win." he muttered, de-summoning the weapons.

Armagnac was pleased. She was also wanting more. So much more. Sherry simply desummoned her, and stared at Jake. This was the part where she should say something nice or something. And she wanted to, but she didn't feel good about the win. She'd been cocky and rude, and he'd barely touched her. How was she supposed to act happy after that? She felt more guilty than anything. Still, she forced a small smile and said, "Thanks."
Then she decided to hell with it and let the smile fall. "You're not hurt, are you?" Her voice was full of worry. "I shouldn't have--" She stopped and shook her head.

Besides exhaustion and fatigue, and the need to take another nap, he was perfectly fine. It seemed Chester had done a good job keeping up the shield right until the last minute.
Jake only gave her a tired look. "You're too nice for your own good."

I don't know why you don't like him, you guys agree on so much. Armagnac just grumbled in response. Sherry was still looking at Jake. "If you say so. But I'll take that to mean you're alright." Which was a relief. "Shall we head that way, then?" She motioned toward the dorms.
