She surprised a laugh out of him with her brash words. Clearly, the woman had a biting sense of humor. He could appreciate that. In fact, he had one of his own. How much of it was part of his mask and how much was genuine was difficult to judge. The persona that he presented to the majority of the world was very complete, after all. So much so that it was nearly indistinguishable from the rest of him at times. But that was inconsequential.
Pyotr eyed the predominantly male caravan. "I certainly hope not," he said mildly. "They are really not my type."

Like him, Nori also eyed the caravan, lips quirking up as Nightlark matched the easy pace of Wolf's mount. "I dunno... " She began in a contemplative tone. "That one there might not be half bad." The Chosen teased him, quite enjoying having a partner that was not the stoic silent type. Man, were those ones a pain to travel with! At least Wolf here had a nice laugh. "Alas, we're both lucky. Can't say any of them are my type, either." She said in a bored tone of voice, making it difficult to determine if she meant the fact there were not many females traveling in this caravan. Or she was just being humorous.
"So tell me, Wolf, if it's not too personal a question. What was it about this lifestyle that caught your fancy?" She asked curiously.

It lasted no more than a fraction of a second, not long enough to be noticed unless one was looking for it, but some dark, indescribably emotion flickered through his eyes. What was it about this lifestyle that caught his fancy? Well, that was a loaded question, and not one that he intended on fully explaining.
Somehow, he very much doubted that most people would smile and nod when hearing that the b*****d son of a nobleman intended to exact revenge upon his legitimate, noble half-siblings. It was probably in bad taste to mention such things. Instead, he settled on discussing a different aspect of his life, and why he chose to be a mercenary rather than using some other means.
"Freedom," he said simply, any trace of darkness well-hidden beneath his easy demeanor. "I used to be a soldier, but I find that the freedom of this life suits me better than the regulation and monotony of a soldier's life." He shrugged eloquently. "What is your excuse? Few women choose this life."

Perhaps she saw the emotion, or maybe she missed it. But Nori said nothing and made no indication to whether or not she had caught the dark look. She merely watched him with that curious look, trusting in Nightlark to stay on course and not trip over his own feet. However she did get the feeling he was not telling her everything. But then, she hadn't expected him to. In her mind, she felt a wave of annoyance from her guardian. He just didn't understand why humans had to play these ridiculous mind games!
"A good answer." Nori murmured, something in her expression softening just a hint. Oh? A soldier, was he? Interesting. Well, that at least answered on if she'd need to save him in a fight. "Me?" She shrugged, a tiny bit of pink appearing on her cheeks. "I guess you could say I fancied myself being like the Wardens of old." Not to mention Wolf had hit the main point. There was freedom in this sort of lifestyle. "And besides," Nori added dryly with a smirk, "Being a 'princess' was already taken."

Had Pyotr known she had been doubting his skill as a warrior, he would have quickly rectified her mistake. It was true that he preferred, even encouraged, people to assume certain things about him but his pride would never tolerate people thinking him inferior. It was a deadly mistake to underestimate him.
"What, don't want to be defended by a gallant knight?" he asked. If he noticed her blush, he gave no indication. Perhaps he simply was not interested.
"You started fighting after you found him?" he wondered, nodding slightly towards the beast in question. The buck was grown, it was true, but from his understanding, Guardians in general had only appeared in the last few years. If the woman had only started fighting after she had acquired her beast, how much experience could she actually have? Would she actually be of any use in a fight?

She refrained from making any sort of rude noise, gracing Pyotr with an expression that said he was clearly reading the wrong fairytales! "And have them fawning over me like I'm some infant that can't walk on my own two feet?" Nori shook her head, amusement in her eyes. "I much prefer being my own gallant knight."
Nightlark snorted, shaking his head and making sure the man got a good look at those beautiful antlers on his head. Obviously he had a name! There were a few other things that may have filtered through the guardian's mind about Wolf, but Nori just flicked him in the ear, ignoring the buck.
"Officially?" Nori glanced at him briefly before looking out along the path they traveled. "No. He just gave me the excuse to step up my game, so to speak." She frowned a little, choosing words carefully. "My family is not unknown for having soldiers among us. My father taught my brother and I how to hold our own at a young age." Which was apparently all she was going to offer up in answer to how she started fighting, nor was she giving up anything in regards to her family name.
"And yourself?" A cheeky little grin flashed along her features. "You aren't going to need a gallant white knight to protect you?" Nyx Argyros *uses Phoenix Down on thread* <3

Well. At least she should have some skill. Of course, training from a young age did not necessarily guarantee proficiency. But she was still alive, so she had to at least be able to defend herself. That was good enough for now. If he wondered about her family, he was not interested enough to pursue it. Not yet, at the least.
"I'm not pretty enough to be a princess," he said loftily. Never mind that he had inherited his blood father's aristocratic good looks. He had been referred to as handsome often enough, but if anyone thought him pretty, they wisely kept it to themselves.
"Besides," he added with a particularly wolfish look. "You might find that I am the black knight, milady."

Nightlark heartily agreed with the man on that one. Going so far as to snort in clear amusement. The vain creature. Nori, on the other hand, actually had to laugh out loud with that one. "Not pretty enough?" She eyed her companion for this job. "Well, I guess if you just did a little work on those eyebrows, powdered your nose a bit, then maybe you might pass off as pretty enough." She was totally teasing, right? Her lips twitched, threatening to give her away. Okay so he might have been attractive. But she wasn't volunteering to boost his ego!
Nori snickered, finally. "The black knight, huh? Guess I should keep my maidenly wiles in check, so you do kidnap me and lock me away in some tower." Obviously she'd read one too many of Vincent's books. "Although," she shot him a little roguish look of her own, "if there is any strong wine involved... you can lock me away for as long as you like."
Yes. She liked her wine that much, thank you. Though talk about 'towers' and 'princesses' had her giving Pyotr a curious look. "Have y'ever worked with the Guards before?"

Pyotr gave an ungentlemanly snort at the idea of prettying himself up, but otherwise deigned to give any proper response. Too much farther with that particular joke, and he might not be able to find the humor anymore.
"Who said anything about a tower?" he wondered instead. "Far too cliche. Any woman I made away with would hardly need to be locked away." Not that he had any particular urge to run off with any women. At this point, they would only get in his way.
"You should be more worried about your predilection toward wine," he said. "How will you ever find a man if you're ever at a cup?"
As for the Guard, well. He wasn't about to tell her that he grew up in the Belastranan palace, though he had never been a member of the Guard. "I may have worked with them once or twice," he told her instead. It was not a lie. It just wasn't the full truth.

Nori just chuckled softly at the not so gentlemanly snort that was his response. Something that was met with a rolled eyed look from the buck. His thoughts flickered through Nori's mind and the woman just shook her head.
Which turned into a raised eyebrow look of her own as she glanced at Wolf. "Oh really?" She inquired, lips twitching up. "I suppose you'll also be adding on that they will never want to leave after having such a taste of your gentlemanly ways?" Okay now she had to laugh, reaching out a hand to stroke Nightlark - since he was getting grumpy with all this talk.
Her expression shifted into something more devilish at mention of love of wine. "Ah, but at least I can trust a good vintage to be true to my tastes." She gave him an almost challenging look. "Can't say the same about the men hovering about the other side of my cup." Or something like that. She just didn't trust easily.
His response to her curiosity had her quietly mulling it over, letting the ride in silence for several paces. "I must admit, I think I quite enjoy this lifestyle more than theirs." It was unclear, however, if she herself had worked with them or not.
"By the way," the sly little smile was back. "What would be your bet as to how long this trip takes? A couple days, perhaps?"

"You said it, not I," he said, offering a less than innocent smile. Who was he to boast about his...abilities? They spoke plainly enough for themselves.
"Men, as a general rule, are pigs," he agreed easily enough. Spirits knew his own father had been a royal a**, and most others he had met were lacking. Then again... "Perhaps you are not looking in the right place." The words sounded suggestive, but there wasn't any real intent behind them.
"Had much experience with that?" he asked, less because he was genuinely interested and more because he was beginning to feel like she was learning more about him than he was about her - nothing significant, but a few facts, nonetheless. That simply would not do.
Pyotr glanced sidelong at the caravan. "I would wager that depends on how strongly we can...motivate them."

Nori just snorted out a laugh, shaking her head. Men! And this man in particular. "I was not the only one thinking it, at the very least." She grinned, finding it easy enough to believe that it was true and he was probably quite... skilled in the art of flattering women.
She'd have to keep an eye on this one.
Now there was something they both could agree on without question. Her own family was no exception to this. In fact, the only decent man she'd ever met lately was Kit's brother, Vincent. And he was like an older brother to her as well. "Hm... perhaps you are right." She said thoughtfully, giving Wolf a ruthful look. "I am, of course, open to suggestion on where one might go about looking?" She was teasing. Mostly. Though she definitely had no intentions of following up on any location he might suggest!
Nori gave a small shrug in response. "Personally? No, I've not had much experience with them. But I've had the pleasure of meeting some who have. And none of them ever had anything... positive to say." She was pretty sure there might have been a grandfather that took up a position with the palace guards at some point. Even more reason for her not to bother with them.
She chuckled, glancing along the caravan herself. "I think... I rather like your way of thinking."

He hummed, which could have meant anything from agreement to amusement, but offered no further comment. As for where to look, well. He simply smiled. If she could not guess, he would not encourage her.
In his considerable experience, palace guards came in three varieties: those who enjoyed languishing in the luxury of a soft job; those who were stationed there as a punishment and hated every second of their dealings with pompous, court-trained idiots; and those who took their duty seriously. The first two were common enough in most palaces. It was the third that was rare in palaces like Sunderland's.
Of course, Sunderland's palace was not host to all of the political backstabbing and violent internal turmoil that made its home in Ledograd. No. Ledograd's palace guards were vigilant because they had to be - to b otherwise would lead to the deaths of their charges and their own disgrace and probable death.
But that was neither here nor there.
"Then perhaps we shall see what we can do to encourage them." he said. Pyotr suspected that Nori would not enjoy his way of thinking at all if she knew the truth of it, but as he had no intention of divulging his darkest secrets, he allowed her to keep her illusions.

Oh she had a pretty good feeling on 'where' she could look. She just chose to pretend he wasn't as handsome as he thought. Instead, his little 'hum' sound was met with a soft chuckle. Nightlark just snorted loudly at the both of them.
As for his experience with palace guards, Nori could agree. And was most familiar with the first and last. But she was not one to admit to having family ties to them, or of having any sort of noble blood in her. Both of which were accurate. And only two people in her life she had felt comfortable enough to admit this to.
Stretching out her arms above her head, she glanced lazily over to Wolf. "I am curious as to what ideas you might have?" She said with a little devilish smile. True she did not know the truth about him, but she did like what she saw and heard so far.
Besides, who didn't have skeletons in their closets? Or so the saying went.

Pyotr met her devilish smile with an innocent look of his own. "It is only our duty as diligent guards to remind our benevolent patrons of the dangers of the road. There could be an ambush at any moment. An attack at any turn. We would protect them, of course, but what a trying experience it would be for the young lads. And there is no telling if the horses would bolt."
He shook his head, the very picture of earnest concern. "No, no. We would be remiss in our duties if we did not encourage them to brave on through their cramped legs and tired eyes for a few miles more. For their own safety, of course."
