"No s**t." He shifts, straightens a little, considering his own horse, and frowns up at Jacob again -- but it's only a moment before he gives in and hauls himself up into the saddle, ready to go. Jacob might annoy him, yes, but that doesn't mean that he won't play along with the other man's [admittedly obnoxious] games.
"Janah's probably not coming. She's been staying out of sight. Because she's smart." And, naturally, Ursa's a dumbass. Not that he'd say that out loud. "There are a lot of people on the streets, though."

Jacob addresses that unspoken comment as neatly as if he'd actually heard Veer say it: "Yes, well, Janah stays out of sight because she's scared of everything. Let's go." And he'll wheel his horse around (the beast makes Ursa look small, it must be part draft horse) and begins to walk sedately down the path leading out of Veer's family's grounds. As they ride, knee-to-knee -- for in spite of his behavior Veer really is a good friend -- Jacob speaks lowly, "As far as I understand it there are rumors of wolf attacks, out by the Talbot estates, the villages. Wolves." He snorts. "And this, with the Guardians --" It may not be the best idea to be anywhere near the Swan right now, but foresight is not one of Jacob's strong suits.

Veer has it, but at this moment, he's so angry at his so-called friend that he says exactly nothing: Jacob gets stony silence in return, Veer falling a few steps back away from the other man. He can deal, now and then, with insults to himself, but insulting Janah is entirely unacceptable -- especially since the insult is simply not true.
He doesn't answer. Doesn't say anything. Just peers back over his shoulder, squinting around them.

Jacob seems to realize that Veer isn't coming -- the draft horse ambles to a halt and Jacob pauses, only because he does not want Veer to see the sudden flush that has crept up his face (though Veer might get to see that his ears turn pink).
After a moment he wheels the horse around and offers what he knows is a strained, forced smile. And, for once, Veer might witness Jacob actually being -- honest about something, instead of backing up a mistake by throwing his literal and metaphorical weight around. "Lighten up, Veer, I was kidding." And then, "I probably shouldn't have said that."

It is as close to an apology as Jacob comes, yes, and it makes Veer's head come back around -- the tension easing just a little bit out of his expression, his head tipped to the side and shoulders hiked in a shrug. It's not the gracious forgiveness he coud give, but it's better than nothing. Jacob will take it, and deal with it.
"She's ghosting us, anyway." He pointed down an alley, and yes, there was Janah, bones almost glowing in the dark. Just a glimpse before she faded into the shadows again, more ghost than Guardian. "And she seems annoyed. Or maybe that's just me."

Jacob watches Janah disappear far back in the alley -- and then looks to Ursa, who is staring belligerently around, as if daring anyone to come near. Jacob is riding a draft horse, and Ursa is almost as tall, if much thinner; no one is going to accost the Guardian. Where Janah is ghostly and fading, Ursa is all force and presence. Jacob sighs, presses spurs into his horse's flanks, and then nods as the big beast begins to ease into a trot. "Ursa doesn't like it either, truth be told."
He seems a bit subdued, maybe a touch mollified -- but the way he then tosses his head, and the way he cants his chin, means he is attempting to save face. "Well, off we go. I imagine we'll find cobbles to throw on the way."

Veer is mollified, to some degree, but that doesn't mean he's back to his easy-going self. His eyes track people as the pass, meet curious looks and hopeful expressions, and he at least can put two and two together.
"We are less stealthy, tonight, than we even usually are." It comes with a shake of his head, and a slow breath. Janah's fear is a bit infectious. "Perhaps it's not the best night for this..."
