A herd? "Ah? Were you originally a part of one, or have you always been looking for one to join?" They themselves had always been 'on their own', but at least they'd still had each other. He couldn't blame the mare for not wanting to travel alone.

"Oh no, I wasn't, they just sound nice," Pelielle admitted shyly, scuffing a hoof lightly on the ground. "I grew up on my own, but I think I prefer company. I didn't even know what they were until Keela told me, though." The depth of her ignorance at the time was a little embarrassing to reflect back on - and for all she knew, she still looked horribly like a young filly in comparison to the more traveled kirin.

"Can't blame you for preferring company." He honestly couldn't imagine what life would have been like without his brother at his side. He might not even have made it, truthfully. "Does she know where any herds are, or are you two just looking around for one?" It might take a while to find one if they didn't have any leads.

"She said they might be on the plains? So we were sort of headed that way... Um, what about you and your brother? Are you going anywhere in particular?" Escalus had said they weren't from around this area, so the only thing she wasn't sure of was if they had a destination in mind.

The stallion shook his head in reply. "Not really. We mostly just explore around different areas." His wings rustled a bit as he spoke. "We were flying a bit earlier, but there's a lot to see on the ground that the trees tend to obscure." All kinds of little paths and streams and beautiful plants could only be seen from ground level. The air did naturally have its own appealing view though.

"Oh, you can fly?" Of course she'd seen his wings, but...she'd never tried using her own for flight, they didn't seem like they would quite carry her. Maybe she didn't have enough confidence...or maybe she just needed to build up her strength? It seemed a little risky to even try though... She had to admit she was a little jealous of his ability. "Mmm, I can see why a ground view is useful for forests...um, are there things in the air like felines and canines?" That seemed a little scary. At least trees and tall grass gave you a place to hide from predators...

Kenjiro blinked at first at the unexpected question, but then had to smile at the innocence of it. She definitely hadn't spent too much time sky-gazing, had she. "No, not in the air, but we do have to land to eat and rest, so we can't really escape them either." No, predators were an unfortunate fact of life that every one of their kind had to stay on guard for...

Even with those needs, she still thought she'd spend most of her time in the air if she had the choice. Really, if you didn't have to worry up there, why come down more than you had to? But she supposed he was right, about not entirely avoiding them. "I understand. But I guess a herd would be good for watching out when you're resting too, if that was something you might want...?" He hadn't quite said yet whether or not he was inclined towards them or not.

The stallion nodded in agreement. "It does help to alternate watches. My brother and I usually do that at night." A small nap or two during the day usually helped to make up for any sleep they missed during the night. Again with alternating watches during the resting.

Well, that wasn't quite what she'd been fishing for, but it was still useful to know. "Keela and I have been doing that too...well. Sort of." When Keela trusted Pelielle to watch for both of them, that was. But they both had to sleep at some point, so Keela did have to let her do so eventually. The mare just suspected the raven-mare slept with one eye open still.

Only sort of? How did that work exactly? "I imagine it's easier when you have more kirin together. Everyone can take shorter shifts then." At least he assumed it would work that way. He had to admit that alone might might herd life worth looking into. Of course, whether or not he and his brother could ever stop exploring long enough to try to be a part of one was another matter altogether. There was just so much to see...

"Mm, I would think so. And foals can't really watch on their own, so you'd need kirin to watch the foals..." She was thinking more in the abstract here - maybe that was part of why eggs got abandoned? When mothers didn't think they could watch them on their own? "There seem to be a lot of advantages to living together."

The mare had a very good point, though it was a mildly curious one to him. "Were you looking to have foals of your own?" Perhaps that was another motivation for her for finding a herd. Certainly it would be far more dangerous having and raising children all on her own.

She blinked at the query. "Oh, I think it might be nice to someday?" She couldn't imagine it happening very soon though, she'd be far too nervous about trying to keep them safe. "I just know that I probably couldn't do so on my own... And there are so many eggs that get abandoned." It was so sad!

"Mm, very true." Their own eggs had certainly been abandoned after all. I guess on the bright side our children are guaranteed to never be abandoned? As soon as the words left his mouth, however, the stallion realized that his words might be interpreted to have a very different meaning from what was intended. "Um, I mean, foals from parents whose own eggs had been abandoned." Nope, this wasn't awkward at all...
