Lightning nodded his head in the direction of the river. "That way." He gently nudged his brother. "C'mon," he encouraged gently. "Let's get you washed up and fed. You look starved." "Ok..." Copper Pawn got to his feet as his half-brother did. He didn't want to be away from Lightning Pawn; he was the safest Gladier to be around. Lightning would protect him, and by the looks of him, he was perfectly capable of the action. And he wanted to know more about his half-brother. What had happened to him...?

Inkling didn’t really want to go to the river and wash off, but the female looked at him with that same look when she threatened to drag him. Wincing he followed her noticing the looks she kept throwing back to make sure he was following. He almost laughed. As if the squishing of his steps was hard to miss. He looked at the two males who were glued to one another. What was their deal? Hadn’t the angry crazy chick said she was the aggressive male’s mate? Who was that other brother who never even met his brother before and was now glued to him? A part of Inkling was a bit jealous. “So what’s the deal with you two?” He asked looking at the males and pointedly ignoring the female even though she scared the crap outa him.

Lightning Pawn glanced down at his quivering brother, then over at Inkling. "... Well," he said simply. "We're pawns: runts of our litters, expendables, undesirables, whatever you want to call us." Nodding towards Copper Pawn, he continued. "I don't know what she did to him, but our mother tried to drown me." He looked down at his half-brother again, who kept his gaze on the ground. "... Cliff," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "She threw me off of a cliff. But I landed in a tree..."

Inkling felt a pang of empathy toward the two boys. He was 'undesirable' to his own family as well, though that had to do more with his condition than it did with being a runt. The female spoke up though before he could say anything. "Drown you? Toss you off a cliff? Parents should never do such things to their children." The female had tears in her eyes. "Little ones should be loved and cherished no mater what." Loved and cherished? What a crock. He sighed. "Ya know that's not how the world works. if you're different you're singled out and left out to starve or whatever."

"She didn't see us as her children, Ithil. She saw us as tools unfit for the job she had for them." And so Lightning and Copper had been cast aside. But since they thought of her as their mother, they would've followed; she had to get rid of them more permanently so they wouldn't come back to haunt her. "I doubt she'll change, and I found a better family because of it. Now, for more pressing matters..." Without warning, Lightning grabbed his half-brother by the scruff of the neck and dunked him in the river and quickly pulled him back out. Copper Pawn didn't even have time to yelp before he was set down on the river bank, shivering as his brother cleaned him more thoroughly. His stomach growled loudly, drawing a sigh from the other male. "When was the last time you ate?" "U-um... I don't remember..." "You need to eat regularly to keep up your strength." "... I can't find any food I know is safe anymore..." Another sigh from the older Pawn brother. "You're hopeless..." Despite his words, Lightning's voice was gentle. "I'm going to go find you something to eat. Can you handle staying here with Ithil and Inkling?" After a few moments of hesitation, Copper nodded. "I'll be right back," the older Gladier said, informing Ithil and reassuring Copper. With that, he turned and disappeared into the forest again. Copper kept his gaze on the ground for the most part, occasionally glancing up at either Ithil or Inkling before quickly lowering his gaze again. He was fundamentally different from his stronger, reckless older brother. The younger Pawn was so cautious and weak it was almost pathetic...

Ithil couldn't and wouldn't believe it. No mother think of her children as such. It was wrong so much that Ithil wanted to find the boys mother and rip into her until the other gladier begged the boys for forgiveness. She wanted to stop everything and just hug and cuddle with Lightning and somehow find a way to tell him that he would be ok, because she was here and she wanted him now for ever. She watched him toss his brother in the water and smiled. He was trying to get the scared-y boy to lighten up. That and Lightning's brother had also really needed a bath. She turned her attention to drippy and hissed at him watching him go wide eyed and back up into the water. Apparently he wanted to handle things himself rather then have her do what her love had done. She watched as the water around Drippy turned color and went down stream like some ominous cloud of death in the water. She watched as he was dunking his head under and then coming up for air. Smiling she turned her attention to Copper since Lightning had left to go get some food. She caught him looking at her and then down at the ground. It was just so sad. Had Lightning been like this? Holding up a paw she beckoned him closer. "Come here. I'm not gonna bite you or toss you in the water or anything like that. I promise." Drippy in the water made a smart alec comment about doing everything else so why not add that to her list. A quick glare made him silence fast enough though.

Copper lifted his gaze to meet Ithil's, flinching at Inkling's comment. He slowly crept over to the female, keeping his eyes on the ground. Lightning trusted her, so he guessed he could too... He suddenly froze, however, when he made the mistake of letting his gaze fall on the river's edge, where the ground dropped sharply into the river. His eyes quickly snapped shut before his mind could make the world swirl around him.

Inkling watched as the male was headed toward the crazy female and then just stopped shutting his eyes. It wouldn’t have surprised him if the little scared gladier had just dropped to the ground and stayed there shivering. He watched surprised when the grumpy witch didn’t yell or shout but bridged the gap between the two and hugged the scared male. Maybe she wasn’t so much of a crazy chick as he had first thought.

Copper initially stiffened when he felt paws wrapping around him, but slowly relaxed into the hold. It felt so warm and safe... Maybe the ledge wasn't as close as he thought. He peeked at the river edge again, quickly shutting his eyes and whining when it felt like the ledge was even closer to him.

Ithil held the little male tight and made soothing noises. “There there, you’re ok. Lightning will be back soon and you’re with me now. I won’t let anything happen to you. You’re Lighning’s brother so now you’re my brother too.” She saw Inking heading toward shore keeping his eyes downcast. What was his problem?

Copper kept his eyes closed, but allowed himself to be comforted. "... What... about Inkling?" he asked meekly, his voice still faint. "Can... can he come too?" If Copper went with Ithil and Lightning, then Inkling would be himself, right...?

Inkling was close enough on shore to hear what the little scaredy cat said. He was shocked. No one had ever wanted him around after all he always made a mess and most found him disgusting. He was even more shocked when he heard the female talk. “Of course we can keep Drippy. He’s to hopeless to live on his own.” He was to surprised to even glare at her for calling him drippy.

"That's... good to... hear. Makes me..." He felt so weak and tired. Would Ithil get mad at him if he just fell asleep? Copper was just about to nod off when he felt a cold nose touch his ear. Turquoise eyes reappeared as he tiredly inspected the lightning blue eyes calmly gazing at him. It took him a moment to realize he was being spoken to. "...Huh?" "Come eat something. I know you're tired, but you need to put something in your stomach first." Lightning stepped away from his brother and Ithil, walking back over to the makeshift sled he'd made to carry food around on. The slab of curved treebark had a variety of fruits and berries, as well as nuts and edible mushrooms. Lightning Pawn watched his brother carefully remove himself from Ithil's hold and then suddenly freeze. "... Copper." "Y-yeah?" "Look at me." Terrified eyes fixed on him, and he resisted the urge to sigh. "Walk towards me." "B-But--" "You aren't going to fall. You're walking away from the ledge. Just keep your eyes on me and take little steps forward, alright?" Copper shakily began walking towards him, though it took a lot more encouragement and reassurance for his little brother to reach his side. "Eat your fill, but eat slowly," he instructed gently before looking over at the dripping male. "You come eat too, Ink." He didn't need to tell Ithil; she'd come on her own. Copper glanced at his brother before nibbling at a mushroom. Lightning was trustworthy, so he assumed there wasn't any strange food in the selection before him. He ate slowly but surely, sticking mostly to mushrooms and berries. The nuts were just too hard to deal with when he was that tired and so was some of the fruit. He did munch on a peach for a minute, but the juice was getting on him, so he went back to the plain but not-messy mushrooms.

Ithil let go of Copper and escorted him over toward the food following at a little bit of distance while Lightning coaxed his brother forward. She watched as Copper started to eat. She looked at Lightning with concern in her eyes. The other male was so small and looked so very weak. She didn’t like it at all. Moving closer to her mate she took a look over at Inkling. Her eyes widened in shock. He was coming closer slowly and he was dripping. It seemed like it started at water dripping but it slowly turned dark and soon it was the dark blue of his name. In the night it would be black and terrifying. He must have noticed her look because he grimaced and looked away halting his progress toward the food. She had thought that if he bathed the ink would stop seeping but it was coming from him not just being on him. If he stood there long enough he would have another puddle under him. How did he sleep? If he curled up in a hollow he would drown!
Inkling saw the look the female gave him. She looked half horrified. Was he that disgusting? He lay down and decided he would wait until the others had finished eating. He was good at waiting. Waiting for others to leave before coming out so they wouldn’t see him. The crazy woman had probably just been mouthing kind words to settle the scared-y cat no one would want him around especially not a neat freak like her. She’d drown him in an attempt to keep him ‘clean.’ “I’m fine. I’ll wait for a bit.” He held up a paw and allowed a few drops of the ink to fall to show Lightning before he set his paw back down. “Nothing will be eatable if I head over and start eating.” His smile was empty but at least it was there. It had been more than he had done in a while. It was even close to a joke.

Lightning smiled slightly at Ithil's worried expression. There was traces of concern and sorrow there, but there was something else, a reassurance that things would get better. His gaze followed hers to Inkling. He listened carefully to what the other male said. "... I see." Before he could say or do anything else, a quiet ping! sounded in his ears and something whizzed through the air towards Inkling. It was followed by two others, and as his gaze fell on the shiny things on the ground, he realized they were copper coins. Lightning glanced down at his brother, who'd just lowered his own gaze to the food. "... Copper?" His brother didn't respond. "That was you, wasn't it?"
"Other..." He hesitated, then continued. "Other Gladiers only come near me... if they want to tease me about being weak... or strange... or if I... irritate them." Ping! "So..." Ping! Ping! Pin-pin-ping! Lightning tilted his head at his brother, puzzled not because of his reasoning, but because of the seemingly endless supply of copper coins that Copper was so casually flicking at Inkling. Shrugging it off, he glanced over at the dripping male again. "That's how it is. You better get over here before you get buried in coins." Glancing back at his coin-flicking brother, he sighed. "Honestly. If you can't grab the food you want because you'll drip ink on things, you can just ask us to pass it to you."
