Shinzu punched his fist and grinned, he loved training simply for trainings sake. "Alright we'll start with something simple, tree climbing." He said as he moved to the more wooded area of the training grounds. Reaching Shinzu quickly climbed up the tree, almost to the top. "Ok, first to reach me wins!" He yelled down to them with a large grin.

Strangely enough, this man seemed eager for training. On some level, Shin respected that. It was almost a shame that this man wasn't going to be their sensei. Almost. There was a good reason for why they were assigned who they were, even if Shin didn't know why that was. He looked over at Kana and gave her a nod, before starting to try and make his way up the tree.

It was an odd feeling for Shin; he didn't want to possibly show up his teammate, but he didn't want to give less than his best. In the end, he just wanted to get the most out of this training. He set off for the tree, looking up and wondering how methodical he should take it. After all, taking his time would mean that he probably wouldn't get there first, but he would get more out of it. Rushing would mean that he would either get there first or break his own neck as he tried to run up... not that it was a good idea. Of course he could probably try to use chakra to walk up... or was that cheating here? Yeah, it was probably cheating.

He grasped the tree, planning on using the branches as marks of progress, rather than trying to hug the trunk as he went up. That seemed like the best way to try and climb it, or at least, it seemed like the best way to do it without falling on his face and knocking himself out. It would just be embarrassing if that happened right before his sensei showed up... Since Shin didn't want his first impression for his sensei to have of him to be him unconscious and looking weak. That was no way to start off by any means.

He took another look at Kana before rubbing his hands together and started his ascent. Or at least, he tried to make his ascent, at first he was just trying to get a foothold on the tree so he could climb up and not have to worry about slipping. Sure he could use just his upper body strength, but he wanted to be more well-rounded, so he couldn't rely on just one thing. Besides, why would he train just one part of his body when he could train all of his body at once? All that was left to do now was to see how successful he was...

Kana couldn’t help but be a little startled by the man’s enthusiasm. Sure, she was a bouncy, energetic person; but she was more of a fist bumping, high fiving kind of a person. The blonde haired girl liked to share in the victories, in the excitement. However, it was better than having someone who just didn’t want to be there. Those people were the biggest drags and it was so difficult to be happy and peppy when there was someone sucking the energy and life from the area.

”Alright, we’ll start with something simple: tree climbing.”

Her shining blue eyes danced at the mention of tree climbing. Were they actually going to learn how to walk up a tree using chakra? That would be so incredible! With the typical bounce in her step, the child fell in behind Shin to follow Akara a little ways into the woods.

The child watched both in fascination and disappointment as the man proceeded to climb the tree. Of his own power. Without chakra. No walking up the tree. Damn. Then again, Kana was just glad that there was someone there to work with and to teach her. Well, her and Shin.

”Okay, first to reach me wins!”

There it was; just that little bit of competition to bubble up her excitement once again. It wasn’t difficult to do, but still! Out of the corner of her eye, Kana noticed Shin make a move. Simply turning her head, she reciprocated his nod with one of her own with a dazzling little smile tacked on.

Once Shin made a move towards the tree, Kana started sizing up her competition. He was taller than her and probably stronger than her, so she was going to be at a slight disadvantage there. However, if she could so some freaky upwards tumbling stuff then she might be able to make this work.

As Kana made her approach she noticed Shin looking over at her again. Was he being apprehensive? That wouldn’t do.

”You had best give me your all, Shin-san. I would be insulted by anything less.”

Hopefully Shin knew that she was looking for an accurate comparison of their skills. It would do no good for her to win with him just doinking around. It would also be useless for her to lose with him goofing around because then she wouldn’t be able to accurately judge how far behind she was. Though at this point all she could do was hope that the young shinobi, her new teammate, took her words to heart.

Chewing her lip slightly, a nervous habit when she was thinking, Kana looked up at the tree. Blast it all her height was going to make starting off difficult. First, she stood on her toes. Then, she reached her hand as far above her head as it would go. Things were just as she thought: the first branches were out of her natural reach.

Kana took a step and crossed her arms as she thought of the best approach. Maybe she could run and jump. Perhaps just a straight jump from where she was would be enough. If all else failed she would go out and get some heels after training so that she could start getting used to those.

Shinzu sat on a branch, looking down at the two fresh faced Genin as they began to climb up the tree. So far the boy, Shin, was making better progress, while Kana was having trouble even getting up the tree. Since she seemed to need the most help, he decided he'd give her some moral support. "Come on Kana! Medics have to keep up with us hard chargers!" He called down with a big smile and a clap to the girl. He was telling the truth, even if his past teammate hated having to keep up with him.

Shin had already blocked out everything else around him as he moved forward; he was doing all that he could to pull himself up the tree. Thus far he wasn't doing that bad at it, as the tree didn't seem that hard to climb. He had dealt with a lot of issues before, but this seemed to be going alright. He could hear Kana below him, and his instructor above him, but he tried to leave them out so he could deal with the task at hand. His hands grasped the bark as his feet tried their best to get some form of traction. This seemed to be rather easy, but there was still a long way to go. He was going to be giving his all, even if Kana though he might be fooling around; he didn't know what way she would make it up the tree, but he was certain that he was going to win. Even if he didn't win, he was not going to let Kana win easily. That just wasn't the kind of man that he was or wanted to be. Certainly, this would be rather amusing to say the least. What could possibly go wrong?

Alright, Kana, you’ve got this. Push aside your disadvantages. They are here to make you stronger than you already are. Remember that you are strong and that nothing can stand in your way. You are bold, intelligent, and powerful. Make it work!

The young girl ran a quick pep talk through her head as she solidified her plan of action. As her father taught her to, the girl crouched as low was she could and placed her palms on the ground in front of her. Sure, she looked like a frog when she did this sort of thing; but her father was focused on learning from nature and his methods were effective.

”Come on, Kana! Medics have to keep up with us hard chargers!”

At the mark of Akara’s words, the girl felt her core and her hips engage, followed by her legs. She sprang into the air and easily gripped the branch above her head. Psh, and to think that she had been over thinking this as much as she had.

Still hanging from her branch, the girl looked up at Akara with a smile.

”Hai, Akara-san!”

Her eyes drew back to the branch as she pulled herself up with her arms until she could monkey a leg up through the gap between her torso and the branch to get a foot up. Tree climbing, oddly enough, was just like rock climbing. As long as there were three points of solid contact it was safe to continue.

Once her foot was planted, the blonde haired child simply stood up on the branch and placed her hands on the branch above her. Then, as she prepared for her next move, she looked over at Shin. Yes, he had gotten up faster than her, but now they were at the same point.

It was once they were in the tree that Kana had some advantageous points. She was small and could easily clamber through the branches. However, there were still some large spaces between the leveled branches that she would most likely have to make a jump for if she didn’t want to cuddle with the trunk of the tree.

There was a smile on the girl’s lips as her shining blue eyes seemed to glow in the shade of the foliage above. If one was looking right at her they would see her eyes turn green as they reflected the color of the surrounding leaves. True, her actual eye color wasn’t changing, up it was really quite spectacular to see either way.

As she prepared for the next ascent, Kana palmed the branch. She could feel rough details through her thick gloves, but she didn’t have the sensitivity to take in the true texture or the ridges of the bark.

Shin took note of the fact that Kana was right behind him, and noticed that she had managed to catch up to him. It appeared that he needed to continue setting the pace so that he didn't fall behind. He was really interested in seeing just how strong his teammate was, considering she was a medic. Not that he would decry the usefulness of medics, but she didn't seem like the strong type. As for him, he used anything he could to gain a foothold on the tree, using his fingers to find holds in between the bark and around the branches. His biggest concern was whether or not his weight would be supported by some of the branches; sure he could climb the center and shimmy his way up, but this was about speed and efficiency. That would take too long. For now, he was still not that far up, so he had the luxury of larger branches and more worn down bark, which was easier to climb. However, even Shin could see that near the top it was already not likely that his way of climbing would sustain him up there. It appeared that although he was doing well now, Kana would do better the higher they went by nature of her natural dexterity.

Just as the small, blonde haired girl got a solid grip on the next branch her eyes searched for Shin. He was no longer beside her. He wasn’t on the branches directly above her. Where did he go? At that her head tilted back to find his feet well above her.

Fuuuu!

Damn! How did he get so high up already?! It was as if he was suddenly part monkey. Well, that sucked. However, Kana just shook her head and smile. Yeah, this was going to be her teammate. That was something that she could be proud about if he kept this up.

Pulling her attention back to her own work, Kana gripped the branch above her head, leaning forward slightly to make the stretch. Her height was a disadvantage in the lower branches.

Since she was so stretched out it wasn’t possible for her to use her legs to jump or push, so she let herself slip forward off the branch while pulling predominantly with her right arm. It wasn’t that her arms were so completely off balance that she couldn’t do a pull up. No, she was looking to use the swing of stepping forward off the branch to rock her legs high enough up for her to get a footing. Sure enough, with that extra pull from her arms, her right sandal found the side of the branch. Now, instead of just muscling her way up, Kana was able to use both her arms and one of her legs.

Up atop the branch, careful to solidify her balance, the blue eyed child began looking for her next move. Sure, Shin was well ahead of her, but she couldn’t focus on that. No, she had to pay attention to what she was doing and on her progress because if she started worrying about what Shin was doing that she wasn’t going to make any forward progress and she was far more liable to slip and fall. That just wouldn’t do.

With her hand on the side of the tree, the girl looked around. She had a few options, some better than others, but she was also trying to determine which ones would put her in the best position as she continued to climb. This was much like the board games her father and brothers played. You couldn’t think just one move ahead; you had to be at least three steps in the future.

Shin had begun doing what anyone in this kind of situation would do; he began using his upper body strength to allow him to climb further. He was basically using only his arms to grab branches and propel him upwards like a slingshot; it wasn't a good way to conserve energy but it was a good way to go for speed. Hopefully he wouldn't find himself running out towards the top. He had wanted to keep an eye on Kana to see how she was doing, but now she was below him and he wasn't really able to focus on not throwing himself into branches and her at the same time. As such he did the only rational thing and ignored where she was for now so that he might better focus on where he was going. Shin was already beginning to notice that the branches were getting a bit smaller, even for where he was; it was going to become harder and harder to climb the way he was trying to. He'd have to adjust his strategy soon, or it would end rather poorly for him... and he'd probably lose. That was far more important to him than getting injured and falling out of a tree.

Kana took another second to look up at Shin, who was more or less exploding up the tree. It was incredible just how strong he was; his age wasn’t even a factor at this point. This was good for the young girl even as she fell behind. Now she had someone to chase and someone to make strides towards. She would be that creep in the shadows drawing inspiration from his success and, hopefully, helping and keeping him in good health along the way.

However, even though she wanted to keep her teammates safe and in good condition, she also had to strengthen herself to be certain that she would be the last one standing. It was essential that she not go down so that she could continue helping her team and tending to their needs. An injured medic was of no use at all. No, she needed to be the strongest defensively if she was going to be an effective member. The blue eyed girl didn’t want to be one of those medics that couldn’t fight for themselves or defend the people around them. Kana wanted to be better than that.

That was the way of her brothers. They weren’t fighters: they were intellectuals, medics. If they were sent into war or into the field they would go straight to the medic tents at the base and hunker down there, waiting for the wounded to return. Though they were her inspiration in a way, they also left her wanting – desiring something more than they themselves had accomplished.

It was the very drive that found Kana struggling up a tree. She didn’t have the upper body strength the Shin did and she was short, so the low branches were harder to reach since they were so spread out. Mind you she wasn’t upset about the predicament, but it was a sort of predicament none the less.

Her eyes had diverted from marveling at Shin’s progress to focus on her own task. Kana moved towards the trunk of the tree so that the branches were assuredly able to hold her weight, though she wasn’t a heavy person. The girl stretched her arms over her head and just barely caught the next branch. She was going to have to be careful pulling herself up until she could get a more solid grasp.

Slipping her fingertips into the ridged of the bark, Kana attempted to pull herself upwards. Her body rose, slowly but surely. She wasn’t slow because of a lack of power, but because of her caution in such a difficult position. Just before the blonde haired child was in a position to readjust her grasp and pull herself up onto the branch the bark gave way and sent her back down to the previous branch.

While her lack for progress was slightly frustrating, Kana focused on this as a learning experience; reminding herself that it was a friendly competition and the lesson was more important than the victory in this case.

Shin was once again making rather good progress with this rather mundane task; if he continued this way it wouldn't e long before he managed to get to the top. He was only vaguely aware that Kana was having a much more difficult time below. Perhaps this kind of exercise was not her forte? It was possible, considering he specialty. Still, Shin was finding it harder and harder to use his strength effectively as he climbed, the bark was becoming smoother and there were less strong branches to hold his weight. Furthermore, without any place to hold his weight he would have to resort to using only his arms to hoist him up. While his upper body strength was what had carried him this far, it also meant that his stamina would be tested since he couldn't rely on the method of stopping to stand anywhere. Regardless, he was not worried; this was a race and he was getting farther and farther ahead of Kana with each passing second. Hopefully the next time they squared off it wouldn't be in something he was equally bad at though; that wasn't exactly favorable to his way of thinking. Besides, maybe he should give Kana some aid? Eh, maybe next time.

8 + 1 = 9 Failure

Reaching up once more, Kana felt for a hold on the same branch, but to her dismay found that her fingers slipping from their holding placed had rubbed the bark smooth. It didn’t help that they were in the Hidden Village of Mist where the plants were always saturated and, therefore, always a little weaker in their coatings.

Knowing that it was no use trying to continue up that branch, it had been a futile effort since she had to stand on her toes to touch it in the first place, the blue eyed girl turned to the one behind her in hopes that it would provide an easier way up.

Once more it was considerably above her head. Sure, she was tall for her age, though only by a few inches, but she was far from being tall – yet. This time, instead of just reaching, Kana planned on making a jump and grab, which would hopefully give her a better grasp on the branch. If she missed there were a couple branches around her that she would be able to catch herself on. Still being so close to the ground made the child a little less cautious than she normally would have been.

So, taking in a deep breath, the girl leapt out towards her target...

Gripping the branch tightly in both hands, she knew that she had made a successful transition. However, she really wasn’t any higher than she had been. No, instead she now had to focus on making her way on top of the branch without rotating her hands so much that it pulls the bark off again. That would be simply miserable.

The blonde eyed the trunk to her right, noting that there were a couple of suitable foot holds for her if she needed them; and at this rate it was entirely possible that she would be in need of such a thing.

It was times like these that Kana was glad that she wasn’t a guy. Her attempts at climbing the tree were already a little embarrassing, but it would have been far worse if she was a guy. Then again, if she was a guy then she may have possessed the upper body strength to just haul herself up the tree like Shin was doing.

However, though Shin’s method was so far effective, Kana saw the similar flaw in it that Shin did: if his stamina wore down then he would have a very difficult completing the ascent. Then again, with how much distance he was putting between himself and Kana it may not matter at this point.

Shin looked down as he continued his ascent, wondering what on earth Kana was doing. She was a ninja; she should be able to move faster than this and be stronger than this. It was just tree climbing; it wasn't like this was some kind of hard task. Of course, it probably was a hard task for her; no doubt she was the kind of ninja who excelled in tasks of the mind, while he excelled at tasks of the body. He was a born fighter; this was how he trained to get stronger. Part of him wanted to slow down for her, so he would stop outpacing her the way he was, but then he remembered what she had said to him before. He couldn't let her think he wasn't giving his all; that would just be plain disrespectful to her. So he continued on, grasping the increasingly small branches with his hands and throwing himself upwards by using his upper body strength. It wasn't amazing, but it was getting the job done, and that's what was important. He only wanted to get to the top right now, so he could move on to the next part of training. He did wonder where their sensei and other student was though.

Blast it all. This is tree climbing; why would I be having such a difficult time tree climbing?! I’m embarrassing myself, I’ve probably destroyed any respect Shin may have had for me as a teammate, Akara-san will likely find no worth in me after this. The only thing that could be worse is if Sensei Kaguya happened to show up right now and watch my failingly dismal display of uselessness. Heaven forbid something chases me up a tree someday, I would be eaten at this rate!

”No, Kana, the lot of the shinobi is not for you. Remain in the home and in your studies, that is where you are destined.” To think I came here to disprove him and now I’m only convincing myself that he was right. This is pathetic! I’ve climbed countless trees in the past but as soon as it’s a “training exercise” I can’t manage to save my life. My height shouldn’t be an excuse; it never was before. I won’t let it be an excuse now. No, I will you my mind and what power I have and I will find a way up this God forsaken tree!

Kana’s mind moved feverishly as she silently scolded herself for this inadequacy that she was displaying for both Shin and Akara. It truly was an embarrassment, but she was going to find a way to fight through and, hopefully, make up some ground on Shin. However, it seemed that with how well he was doing that hope would be hinged solely on his error and the blonde haired girl would never wish for that. After all, his performance so far had been flawless and that was something that she could applaud him for.

Setting back into her resolve, Kana looked down at her feet only to realize that she was farther off the ground than she remembered. Then, she looked up to see that there was no branch in her hand. There were pieces of bark sticking to her gloves, but that was the only remnant of her adventure.

While she had been scolding herself, the child had started climbing without realizing it. She didn’t know how she got to the point where she was, but she was now making forward progress and that was all she could ask for.

Kana smiled, glad that she was back on the right track and ready to continue her climb. She was a fairly simple person: she never stayed upset for long and it only took the tiniest of successes to throw her back into full force positivity. With another little jump, since the branches were still a little high, the girl resumed her climb.

Shinzu yawned slightly as he looked down at the fresh faced Genin as they climbed up the trees. He could remember those days of excitement for, and fear of the unknown. He could also remember getting in trouble during those days too, since there was no one to keep them in line. "Ah, it's a good thing you all have a Jonin. The first thing I did as a Genin was prank my friend and get banned from the library because of it." He said with a laugh and large smile, Gen had never seen it coming. "Still can't enter those the Library, or did I work things out?" He said as he scratched his chin. "I can't quite seem to remember."
