"Well," Bedwyr began, readying himself for what he sincerely hoped wouldn't be something akin to heartbreak. He had to decide what to tell first - the good news or the bad news. "Your mother and I met a long, long time ago, when we were still foals. As time passed, we fell in love, and eventually had you and your brother and sister." That's certainly the shortened version, he thought ruefully to himself. "Bardan and Ishika are their names, and your mother's name is Lavender," he continued. "They're both kind souls. Bardan's a traveler, like your mother - they both have wings, and take trips all over the land. Ishika's a healer, like me; she got the unicorn horn and tail, as well."
Now came the tough part. So far, it'd been a very brief retelling of their life story - something that surprised the old stallion. He'd been completely ready to wax on the subject, but now realized that there wasn't really much to say. "But when we lost you, it was almost too much heartbreak to bear. It seemed like you'd only been out of your basket a few days, and you just wandered off... We did our best to raise Ishika and Bardan, but one of us was always off looking for you, praying to find you. In the end, when they'd grown up and moved out of the nest, your mother and I grew apart, too. Twice, actually," he said, chuckling slightly as he remembered their short reunion before realizing that their differences were too much to reconcile. "We love each other, but we're not in love anymore. So since then, she's been traveling like she likes to do, and I've been traveling, too, partly searching for you and partly searching for answers."
Giving his son another smile, Bedwyr nudged him with a shoulder. "Now, what about you? Who are you here with?" he asked, looking beyond Fergus and into the firelight. "And do you have any questions that I can answer?"

"Bardan and Ishika" he the let the names resonate on his tongue. It seems strange now, he had always just assumed he was pure unicorn, but he had wind in his blood? He liked to run and feel the breeze through his hair but he could never imagine leaving the ground. But still he wondered what it might be like to fly. He was upset to hear that his separation had caused them such heartbreak, perhaps if he had been there for them they would still be together. He felt guilty and ashamed for not looking for his family, but how could he have been looking for something he knew nothing about? Fergus was grateful Bedwyr never gave up on him. He could have gone on the rest of his life feeling lost and lonely, and never knowing why. He now felt exposed and stripped of all protection, all the false courage Fergus had gathered to bare and get through the day had now fallen away. Everything he knew about himself was in question, and was only now, slowly being answered.
"And Lavender," it would seem he took after his mothers namesake, "they all have such beautiful names!" Butterflies filled him from the belly up and gave him a nauseating excitement. He was both nervous and ready to meet them, all of them. He wanted to see and know the family he was deprived of. Bedwyr's search for his son had ended but Fergus' had only just begun. He was ready to begin his search and find his sister and brother and mother. But first he would give all his attention to the family in front of him.
"I'm, well... I live and travel with my human companion Flannery. I think she is a mercenary? or perhaps just an adventure, she enjoys the excitement of the road and the thrill of danger. I mostly try to keep her safe. She is my best friend and we have been together for as much of my life as I can remember." he paused, no knowing what more to say, he pretty much spent all his time with her. "I follow her around on adventures and I see lots of things, generally that's about it." he said with a shrug. "But I dont have a mate or kids or anything. I know of other soq, but mostly its just Flan and I." Now that he had listened to himself, it sounded kind of sad. Like a loner, he spent all his time with a human and often preferred her company to that of other soquili.

"A human?" Bedwyr replied incredulously, leaning around Fergus to try to get a good look at her. "Is it dangerous? Or is it just another creature, not malevolent?" More curious than worried, Bedwyr eyed his son, wondering what sort of adventures he'd been on. Though the stallion had often scorned tales of dragons and fantastical creatures and such, he knew that real adventure was still out there - he had been on a few 'wild goose' chases himself.
"And no family aside from her and the goat, eh?" Bedwyr continued, mostly teasing. He was a tiny bit disappointed that he had yet to have any grandchildren, though he knew that his children were still a bit young to be settling down - for in his old-fashioned mind, Bedwyr thought the only right way to have children was to be on some kind of steady ground before even thinking about trying. If it didn't work out, it didn't work out, as he'd proven... But he was surprised that none of his children, raised as kind and strong as they had been, had attracted worthy mates yet. Mentally shrugging, though, Bedwyr just hoped that none of his children would go through what he and Lavender had gone through: the loss of a child, and then, the loss of the relationship they'd built their family around.
Getting back to reality and out of his thoughts, Bedwyr circled back to another topic of conversation, hoping to keep it going - "What kind of adventures have the two of you been on?"

Just Flannery and the goat. Fergus' face flushed a little, maybe it was a little embarrassing. He hoped Bedwyr was not disappointing in him for not making a family of his own. Fergus got along with females well enough, but he never found one that he was particularly attached to, or attracted to. He could appreciate their beauty, recognize it, but rarely did a mare's appearance or personality evoke that special feeling others spoke of. Fergus had never been in love, any one who spent any amount of time with him could probably guess; his innocence was blatantly obvious. his movements were sometimes shy or awkward, and he was ignorant to any sexual or romantic situation, and he never understood the innuendo in a joke. Lemon used to tease him relentlessly about it, while she was usually a pain to be around, he learned a lot from her.
but oh the adventures he had been on. It seemed any where Flan went was an adventure. Fergus snorted to hold back a laugh when Bedwyr inquired if Flannery was dangerous.
"Malevolent? Gods no!" it sounded like a joke. "As a human she is capable of many things, but she is very pure of heart, and is more or less a danger to herself." his voiced lowered in pitch, almost saddened. He looked back at her, she was tucked under a woven blanket and was pretending to sleep. His eyes softened a little.
"I suppose she is a danger to anything she is hunting..." he said as he had just thought of another answer, and motioned to her pack and hunting gear; a bow, quiver, and sword were plainly in view.
"We do lots of small adventures; we recover things from ruins, hunt bounties, trade things over long distances, hunt rouge beasts. I could go on and on. But there is one that is pretty big, and it seems to be on going." he talked about his adventures so casually, and it was clear he had become accustomed to the lifestyle, and thought nothing of it. But this big adventure, even he sounded skeptical.
"Flannery, she.. She wants to find a dragon. I think she intends to slay one with that sword, but I have never seen her use it." He was pretty sure there was no such thin as a dragon, but Flannery seemed to be convinced of its existence.
"I'm not sure what we will find, but she seems to know where it is, she had the witch, Baba Yaga show her were it's layer is." Fergus shivered at the sound of her name. He probably shouldnt say it again, Baba wasn't a real witch, but she was very mystical and one could never be quite sure.
"That.." he started, referring to the meeting with the witch, "was a very unpleasant experience." he shivered again and his face looked ill. "She wanted to eat me!"

Feeling a rush of relief as Fergus assured him that Flannery was, from the sound of it, mostly a good human, Bedwyr felt his alarm fade. "She needs to hunt for sustenance, then?" he asked, sincerely hoping the human girl didn't hunt for sport. He didn't know if he could stand by while she harmed the innocent creatures that his kind worked so hard to protect. Of course, there would always be predators out there, but most ate the things they hunted.
"That certainly is a lot of adventures," he said, feeling himself puff up a little from pride. But at Fergus's next words, Bedwyr took a pause. "Slay a dragon? Isn't that the job for the prince in the old stories?" he asked. He certainly wasn't implying that Flannery wouldn't be able to do it... He'd just always pictured some huge human with armor and magic on his side. And a trusty horse that wouldn't be too much in harm's way. At his son's next words though, Bedwyr couldn't help a laugh. "Eat you? Is that so? Is it witches or warlocks that turn things into toads?" he asked, beginning to really feel at ease in the conversation. He even thought, maybe, that he might like to meet Flannery, though it would probably be better done during daylight. The curiosity he felt was stronger than the uneasiness from being around a human; Fergus knew her well enough. Why shouldn't he get to know her, if his son did and he was given the chance?
