"Oh? Just what is wrong with how I'm dressed?" She teasingly huffed at him before a subtle little smirk gave her away. She shook her head, "It's okay though, my feet can handle it."
Her smirk softened a bit, "Cool if I put my chocolate in your bag too? Can be an after-swim snack?" She held the chocolate out for him just in case he decided to do that.
Rin followed along down the trail careful not to step on anything the whole way. When he finally spoke, it almost startled the woman before she finally answered, "I... used to." She frowned thoughtfully, "Not in a while though."

He took the chocolate, putting it in his bag among the bottled waters and other things he brought, zipping it up.
When the conversation started up again, he looked over at her. "Why did you stop?" He asked, noticing her frown and, never not curious, wanting to know.

"Oh just... disagreements and infighting with swim buddies. They all stopped but I still wanted to. Especially ... well... now," Rin offered a lop sided smile. "I could use a bit of work I guess, to at least know where I stand these days."

He watched her a moment, before looking on ahead. "You didn't strike me as someone who needed buddies to have fun. I didn't think not having a buddy to swim with would stop you." Maybe Rin was a bit more dependent than he thought. "Who were you fighting with?"

"I don't, but for me swimming seems pointless without someone to swim with.. just... quiet and lonely. No one to splash or race or laugh with. It just... It's like all the fun of it was sapped out." Rin offered Melvin a daring grin, "Well now, look who's abusing his scientific curiosity a bit. You are such a tech I swear."

Melvin smiled back. "Curiosity isn't just for science geeks." He told her. "Just wondering what would make you so upset that you'd stopped hanging out with someone. Wouldn't want to have a repeat, ya know?" Of course he in on way would mind swimming alone, but it was a nice way to turn the conversation back to the question he had been prodding at before. He'd dismiss the who for now, but the reason why a fight broke out was another thing he wanted to know.

Rin chuckled. Yeah, Melvin was such a science geek. But she wasn't about to argue right now. She shook her head though, "No. It wasn't me. I was the one that made them not want to hang out anymore. I guess. By being weird and too honest. Where honesty as it turned out was... inappropriate. I guess." it was possible she really wasn't sure why things turned out the way they did. "And other people just got well... busy with their own lives," she was frowning again. "It's hard finding time to just ******** around, I guess."

Melvin had a to chuckle at that. "Really, cause twitters shown that people ******** around and up a lot around here. I hear a lot of people complaining there isn't enough to do, and when they have to do something, they never have enough time." He really thought that if everyone was really busy, he'd see a lot less people in the Infirmary from stupid spars or fights. Sure, they had weapons, but did everyone have to be physically aggressive at the drop of a hat?
It sounded like whatever friends Rin had went and left her to hang out with other groups.
"Sounds more like they just decided to hang out with other people than being busy."

Good going Melvin. Rin was staring at you now with the most devastated look on her face. Being too busy was one thing but opting for another person all the time and ditching her was just... something had to be wrong with her. She sorta... knew. But still.

Melvin noticed Rin going quiet and looked over and nearly stepped off the trail at the look she was giving him. Oh crap. She took that hard, but didn't she just figure it out on her own. "Uh, sorry. I just thought that an awkward swimming party wouldn't stop someone from hanging out with everyone." That probably wouldn't help stop this look she was giving him. "They were probably just looking for an excuse." He adjusted the strap of his backpack, looking up at the canopy. "They were probably dicks."
Melvin grabbed the spinning wheel of this conversation before it went off a cliff. "Did you swim before coming to this island?"

Rin still looked crushed.. she just looked crushed at her feet as she wandered after Melvin quietly for a good long moment before muttering softly, "Kinda... a little.. once in a while. I never really enjoyed it back home."

Oh My Jack, Melvin. Why didn't you just take her favorite foxfire and set it on fire while you were at it? Is this how you treat your friends?
I didn't know she was going to get that hurt over it. I was just talking.
See. That's your problem. You talk too much. Ghouls don't like that. How about you beef up, grow some muscles, and just flex a bit. Then you won't screw up so much.
I can just imagine the intellectual circle that made up your friends.
Melvin walked along with her, knowing each thing they talked about would distract her from what he said. "What did you enjoy back home?"

Rin swallowed down the feelings enough to lift her head a bit, "Well.. I liked gardening. Growing plants and enjoying the fresh air they brought.. and.. uh.. " She looked at him again, "What about you?"

They had talked about this before, but it was a safe topic and one he was glad would distract her from the conversational punch he had delivered her. "Watching sci-fi movies, hanging out with friends, and reading..." It painted probably a more indoor picture of him though, which wasn't true or false. "I used to live near a marina growing up though. I used to swim, but then started just doing that in pools." The lakes and rivers were too dark that he often felt something would come up and drag him down. Something only he could see, and that the most upsetting thing was that they would blame his death on him not being a good swimmer and not on a shadow beast.
"Used to go fishing too." He also knew how to ice skate, and liked winter because everything was bright white. The only downside was that it got dark much earlier, but by then he could excuse going inside early on the cold weather.

Rin watched him while listening before suddenly chuckling uncontrollably, "I can't imagine you covered in fish stink while man handling worms." It suddenly occurred to her though, silencing all laughter, "Sci-fi movies?"
