" . . . . well." Ofelia it was now or never, time to totally be honest. She looked at the book, looked back at Jason, and felt her cheeks sort of color themselves red. "Ah'm havin' a hard time readin' the recipe. Ya see. . . .Ah....dun read so very well." That was being kind when mentioning her skill, seeing as she was just confusing herself while looking at the words and methods.
Ofelia had always been and still always was just a hands on person in terms of learning and teaching. All the recipes she knew came from trial and error (and some reading), with a few others from people at school teaching her or a nice neighbor bringing her over for meals when she was much younger.
. . . he probably thought she was a really, really bad idea for a teacher now or maybe even he thought she was a liar about how good she could cook. Both of those thoughts didn't settle too well in her stomach.

If Ofelia thought Jason as going to be angry at her, then she would be in for a surprise. Though the moon trainee appeared surprised at this new piece of information, he was quick to make sense of it. He was not a judgmental man and knew that everyone had their own strengths and weaknesses (A good example being she was brave, while he was chicken s**t). All it meant was he needed to come up with a solution to this dilemma. "Oh...I see..." He said out loud, noticing how Ofelia's face seemed to redden with the admission. "T-thats okay...how about I read out the recipe for you? Or even better, I could teach you how to read? Since you are teaching me how to cook and all."

"Umm." While being taught by someone she was teaching sounded a little silly there was certainly nothing wrong with it, he seemed an honest guy and he wasn't mocking her or doubting her ability to cook, so. . . she could take the leap and trust him a little on showing her. "How...'bout fer now, we go wit' column A but also a little wit' column B? Ah really do need ta learn ta read better at least, it's...a bit killer on missions an' stuff when Ah hardly understand things wit'out havin' ta fill mahself in as we go." Not having to ask someone the entire time the scope of the mission would also be amazing.
That being said they needed to get to work or the food wouldn't be done. "Let's make the rice first, Ah'm pretty sure ta make fried rice ya need cold rice ta start wit'." Making rice wasn't something she needed to read over, but she looked to Jason for confirmation if the recipe said cold or hot rice. To give herself a start on learning she also looked as well, spotted the words 'rice' and 'cold', and went ahead and decided they needed to start. "It says. . . uh. . . four cups. How large is the servin' size?" She was asking because she'd turned away and was looking at the bag of rice, checking it over for grain size. It wasn't that she was trying to get out of reading it, not at all.poke mattix we can have both of them make large servings and then invite others in, or maybe have them half the work so it only makes one thing?

The sun trainee didn't seem to enthusiastic about being taught to read, but at least she still agreed to it."That sounds reasonable." Jason said to both suggestions, picking up the book to confirm what Ofelia had said. "Yeah, we need to cook the rice first...and apparently it needs to be chilled." At this he raised a eye; why would they need cold rice? Wouldn't hot rice work just as well? "It also says it serves four, so if we're both cooking the rice, we'll have eight servings." Which was a lot of food, and he was pretty sure neither of them could eat that much rice. They could always half the serving size, or they could ask others to help them eat it... The moon trainee really hoped that if it would come to that, that he cooked this properly so he didn't inadvertently poison half a division. Rown I'm cool with either! I'll just have to find a few other peeps that would be interested in jumping in BD

"Hmm....let's jus'....make a single batch'a rice an' half each what we cook? That way we can stick ta four servin's an' only have ta invite two more people in - unless ya think ya can eat two servin' by yerself." Ofelia teased. "Ah know Ah could if it tasted good, so Ah'll be countin' on ya ta do yer part." Working towards each of them doing half of the recipe would actually teach good portion control, not that Ofelia had thought of it at the time.
Or maybe she did. "By splittin' like that we'll both learn portion control, since we gotta try an' make half each wit'out goin' over. Sounds like a fun challenge ta me, an' a good lesson fer ya." It was a lesson for her too but shut up. He didn't need to know all her faults in a single go.
The teen motioned for Jason to get the rice going. "Yanno how ta make rice?"

...Could he eat two servings by himself? That was a interesting question. "...If...I really wanted to, I guess?" It wasn't something he did everyday but, he couldn't see any reason why he couldn't. "But I think I'll prefer to share the food around. It's not like we have a unlimited supply at the moment." He responded, before picking up a bag of rice. "Halving the portion size shouldn't be a problem either. We'd just have to divide everything by two. So it'll be two cups of rice instead of four." It seemed like a easy enough thing to do. As for cooking it, he had a idea of how to do it... "I...think to cook rice you use boiling water..." He mused out loud as he bent down to grab a small pot. In about five minutes he had a half filled pan on the stove, waiting for the water to heat up before he would add the rice.

"Accckkk noooo nooo, add the rice first then add water an' when it boils cover it up an' set it ta low fer twenty minutes. Or...uh...maybe ya can do it yer way an' we'll see what happens. The most fun that comes from cookin' is doin' stuff yer own way right?" Actually...Ofelia wasn't sure if that was the proper way to make rice - it was the way she always made rice anyway and was how she was making her two cup set. Two cups water, one cup rice - so four cups water for the two cups of rice or maybe she was just going to end up with soggy rice.
It might have been a bit since she last made rice, okay? Usually a rice cooker was the best thing for that but she probably wouldn't know how to properly use one of those anyway so screw it, they'd get slightly mushy fried rice and whomever had her half would have to suck it up.
Of course though either way they'd have to wait for the rice to be done, it wasn't going to pass in a blink of an eye, and the redhead took this chance to ask Jason a question. "How come ya didn' laugh when Ah said Ah couldn' read, an' how come ya still wanna have me teach ya ta cook? Most people would flee like the wind from a chef who can't properly read a recipe."

The sudden outburst had Jason looking at the hot water in alarm, not understanding why it was so wrong to wait for the water to boil first. Was there even a difference? He went to grab the bag of rice to put it in, but then Ofelia said they should try it his way. His way? Wouldn't it be better to do it her way? It didn't seem to matter though, as the water was already boiling so he would have to do it his way. He added the two cups of rice, covering the pot with a lid, and waited for it to cook. Which was going to be a while, so perhaps he should start on something else? Or answer Ofelia's question instead. "Why didn't I laugh? W-well, it wouldn't have been very fair to laugh at something like that." He answered truthfully. "And just because you can't read doesn't mean you can't cook a meal." Though it did help, but he wasn't going to mention that. "You seem to know a vast amount of information about it, a lot more then I do. And you already said you've been cooking since you were a child. So whats the difference if you can't make out a few words?"

"It wouldn'a been fair, sure, but Ah sort'a expected it anyway. Ah'm nineteen an' can barely read like a sixth-grader - sommin's gotta give there, yanno?" She rubbed the back of her neck which was probably a bad idea since she'd need to wash her hands again. Whatever, really. "It's kinda funny though, people here at Deus are so cruel ta one'nother most'a the time but Ah dun really get mocked fer mah readin'. Granted Ah've told like next ta no one, but still." She shrugged and looked at the blonde teen before heading over to the sink and running her hands under the water. Old habit, awesome hygiene. It was a win/sort of win perhaps.
His compliment towards her about having lots of knowledge worked well, it got her mood back up, and the teen motioned for Jason to join her with the book. They had a little bit left to go with the rice as it was, perhaps it was time to just read and talk and maybe have him explain a few things to her. "Most everythin' Ah learned from cookin' was via trial an' error which is still sorta how Ah work it. Ah mean, what do some of these words even mean? Like if ya explained the process then maybe Ah'd know, but it's kinda funny since Ah know how sommin' works but Ah dun always know the name fer it." She tried to think of an example, and stumbled on one. "Like...braisin'...er...to braise, Ah didn' know that was what the method was called until a teacher in mah home ec said sommin'. Stupid everythin' has ta have some kinda technical name, s'really silly."
Ofelia had kicked a** and taken names while she was in Home Ec. It was her first A in all of school and sadly, her last. Well, other than PE but everyone passed PE so long as you didn't cut class or die.

"I suppose...but why weren't you able to learn to read during school?" Jason asked. It seemed odd that she wasn't able to learn at that time. Perhaps she just had difficulties? Though he frowned at the cruelty that was rampant at deus ex. Generally by one certain death division leader. "I suppose they're more worried about how well you can fight more then reading. But don't worry, I wont tell anyone about your reading...skills." Which was a nice way of saying it. The word braisin, however, made the trainee think. "Umm...braisin'....I think thats like browning something? I'm not sure either, it sounds more like a cooking term." He grinned awkwardly. "I guess there are I don't even know, and I spend much of my time reading." Rown Sorry if I missed something. I'm posting from work BD;

"Ah tended ta sleep at school, on account'a the noise from the barn at home. Livin' next ta a buildin' full'a stuff screamin' all day an' night tends ta make ya tired. Ah got better able ta ignore it once Ah was older." By then though learning to read properly was a little out of the question. "Also Ah have only one eye, kinda made reading hard so Ah got lazy." She shrugged and grinned, willing to admit that it was her own nature that kept her from becoming a literary all-star. Books weren't her thing now, probably wouldn't have been even if she could read, so there were no hard feelings. Except for when it came to mission things and other important events. Jason said he'd help her though and he was making a promise not to tell so she had all the more reason to believe the problem would be solving itself in due time. By this point she'd been slow in her talking, the rice should have been close to done. "Check yer rice? Ah think it's almost done."

It was as if a light bulb had gone off in his head. "Ahh! A farm! So you lived on a farm when you were younger!" It also explained the accent too. "That must of been interesting. I'd imagine you had to get up early as well, to take care of the animals." Though he didn't want to say anything about having one eye, since it was something he hoped he would not have to experience. Ever. Jason was then reminded about his rice, which seemed to startle him as he had been focused on talking with Ofelia. "Ah, the rice!" He moved over to the stove, taking the pot of the heat. "Yeah, it's cooked, so now I need to strain it...". After a few moments of searching, Jason had found a strainer and tipped the contents of the pot into it, over the sink of course. Leaving the rice on the side, he turned his attention to the vegetables. "Hmmm...I better get to chopping those now."

"There were no animals on our farm, nor did Ah really live on a farm." Ofelia raised an eyebrow and looked at Jason, wondering why he suddenly looked so content as if he'd figured something major out. "We had a barn, sure, but it was haunted. No animals, jus' lots an' lots of things that screamed in the night." The teen spoke casually as she went about getting her own rice together, relieved that it wasn't mushy or anything else. She set it in a container and looked over to Jason as he spoke again, motioning with her elbow for him to follow suit. "Put the rice in the fridge, it needs ta be chilled b'for was can use it in the stir fry."
That was the easiest step really, getting rice ready and into the fridge, and the teen nodded to Jason when he mentioned it was time to get to chopping veggies up. They had a spread, a good deal of a spread, but if they were halving it then perhaps one vegetable each for them? No one liked fried rice that was two parts vegetable, one part rice. "Yeah, sounds good. Let's start wit' the carrots - we only need two which is perfect fer the two'a us an' it asks fer them ta be chopped nicely, which Ah think ya also said ya needed to learn?" Yeah, he said he had problems chopping or whatever so now was a good time. "Get a choppin' board out an' a small peeler. We gotta peel 'em down first, then we're gonna slice an' dice." She had her own peeler in hand already and was spinning it between her fingers like it was no big deal.
Ofelia was pretty good with sharp objects.

"O-oh..." Jason had assumed that she was a farm girl, but it appeared that the barn she had mentioned was a source of fear instead. Or not, it didn't look like she had been afraid of said barn. Though if he had to live next to a barn like that...no, no, he just couldn't do it. Following the sun hunters lead, he set his own rice in a container, then left it in the fridge to cool down. It also appeared he would get a few lessons in chopping as well. Y-yeah, It would be great if I could learn some better techniques." He said as he grabbed himself the items that were requested, glancing at the peeler for a moment. When was the last time he had peeled something? A while, but he was pretty confident he could do this part. And thankfully he could. Peeling the carrots turned out to be straightforward, and within a few minutes he was done.

"No need ta sound confused or apologetic. The barn was sommin' horrible, not gonna lie - but Ah took care'a it b'for Ah came here. Nothin' in there is gonna hurt anyone else every again." That was the end of that and hopefully enough to settle Jasons's worries. The redhead had gone off on her own line of thought and taken his simple 'ooh' to mean he was apologizing or being confused so she felt it was good to explain things to him. Good and probably bad since it sort of meant he now knew she was a pyro? Go figure the goods and bads on that.
She didn't say anything else as they went into peeling, chuckling faintly at Jason's comment about new techniques, and she gave him a pleased nod at his progress over the peeling. "Yer good at that - which is good. The thing is when people dun peel right ya end up wastin' lots'a yer vegetable." He had most all of it left, the praise was well deserved and thus given, and so they got started. "Okay fer finely choppin' see what Ah do? Fold yer knuckles an' place 'em at the end where yer gonna cut ta. It'll prevent the veggie from movin' an' give ya more control."
She started chopping slowly, using her hand as a booster. They were just slicing the carrot at the moment, not anything fancy, so there was't a need to rush. There was also the wonderful thing about having a shield - she couldn't cut herself with that in place.
