She took a second to move the platters and things on her table to make room between them and started to lay the cards face up so that Ulmuka could see them, "It has a learning curve but most games do. It is pretty easy to catch on to when you get the hang of it," she said softly.

"These cards are called Hanafuda, there are many different games you can play with these cards but I prefer the one I mentioned," each row was laid out for him to see and she started to explain the meaning of their designs after she felt content with their layout, "There are twelve suits in a Hanafuda deck representing the months. Most are designed with flowers, but I custom create decks often times but I usually try to incorporate flowers. Each suit will have two normal cards," she indicated them, "and two special cards. You will also note that ribbons are drawn on some and then there are animal like figures as well. This will be important for our game."

"For the game of Koi-koi, each game lasts about twelve rounds and you want to capture more hands faster than I do," Lattice said quietly. "I will deal you eight cards, four at a time - first to you and then to myself. There will also be eight cards in the center between us," she paused a moment to see if he understood the game so far or had certain questions.

His head turned and shifted as she explained. He craned somewhat over the table in interest. Flowers. Animals. Ribbons. Special cards.. The strix didn't consider himself to be very intelligent. It was seeming slightly complicated at first but there was no way to tell from looking at him that he may have been confused.

For now he would concentrate on game layout and what would win a hand. The best practice was to actually try and play. He could learn as he went along right?

"There are two different types of hands that we must check for after dealing is done, one is hand of four which are four cards of the same month and then the joined hand which is four sets of two cards from the same month. If one of us has one of those hands then that person wins the round and gain six points if we both have either hands then we ignore it and start play, starting with whoever is dealer trying to capture hands. If we run out of cards then the run is a draw and no points are scored." She seemed rather in her element as she explained things through. Much to her nature (and the chagrin of others) she is very thorough with her explanations causing many a glazed looks for those that may have stopped paying attention at this point.

Lattice was starting to gather up cards, she would show him how to form hands as the game progressed. "If you capture a hand it is your choice whether or not you want to keep trying to get more. If you do then you must announce 'Koi' for each time. When a player announces 'Game' then the round is over and they gain points for all their captured hands. If your points are seven or mor your points double~." She went on to explain some of the finer details as she shuffled and began to deal out the cards also leaving a draw pile nearby. "If Koi is announced it is as if you are betting that you can form a new captured hand or improve your current one before I can form my first hand. If you improve your hand you do not gain any additional points for doing so - you just get the amount of points that hand is worth."

"The advantage of Koi is that you can increase your points. If an opponent successfully forms a hand first then the score for the round is doubled this way as well but other player gets no points due to their failure to form any successful hands before 'Game' is announced." She finished letting out a small sigh, "ready?"

Muka was definitely lost but would never say no to trying the game. When Lattice asked if he was ready, he made a thoughtful noise. "As long as you will be patient with me.. as I learn. Perhaps we can walk through the first hand?"

His head bobbled a 'yes' to her. Deal these cards and let's see what happens!

She smiled slightly, almost apologetically, to the strix, "You will understand as we play, of course I shall be patient with you. Despite the urgency to capture hand this game, in its own way, can be about patience." Once she finished dealing the cards and arranged them just so she stared over at him, "We shall begin play now." Then she proceeded to teach him how to play - in action rather than words.

Lattice was a quiet, patient sort of teacher, if a mistake was made during play she'd pause and shake her head and explain why that move was incorrect or why that hand garnered no points. If she was asked questions she answered them happily.

Muka was very slow with it at first. To him it became more of a memorization game. The knack was knowing what the cards were and what matched up together. Thankfully Lattice was a good teacher and very patient. His own mistakes were met with giggles and even the engraver ghoul seemed as if she couldn't help joining him some of the time.

By the time several hands had been played he was a poor player, but seemed to have a grasp of rules. Muka's wings rose in a stretch as he realized suddenly how long he'd been raptly at attention, hunched over the low table. Their tea and pastries were long since gone.

It was a miracle his attention had been kept for so long! The strix stretched his arms above his head after setting his cards down. "Thank you for teaching me! it's a very interesting game. I'm afraid I don't have much of a competitive nature, but then again I never mind when I lose!" He giggled.
