"Yes," agreed Kit. "That is an advantage to having an estate. Plenty of land." And income and influence and any number of other things that were both tedious and worthwhile, if the estate was well-run. He had certainly had his share of experience with the matter, and he had not even inherited his father's lands yet. Not that he wished to for some time, yet. If it was all the same, he would much rather his parents lived long, full lives. But that was neither here nor there.

"As good a time to carry on a tradition as ever," he offered, though he wondered how one would organize a hunt if one knew nothing about it. Perhaps one of the servants had experience?

"What do you intend to go after? Do you have hounds?" Most game was easier to shoot with hounds to flush it out, or so he should think.

"Only sorry old ones; bird hunting might be better." It was offered in the same careless, flighty tone as anything else -- but Paul blushed to admit it. The dogs that were left remained only because no one wanted to buy them: too old and feeble even to breed, there were three, and mostly they warmed his caretaker's hearth when he was away.

He puffed out a sigh.

"Less need, hunting birds. Otherwise, I'd have to...to build it back up..." And maintain it, he though, but didn't voice. The idea of handling a group of hounds was enough to make him shudder.

He nodded and then brushed it aside as unimportant. It only made sense, really. If Paul's estate was in as sorry a shape as gossip suggested, and even if it was finally starting to recover, quality hounds were still a luxury, one that not everyone would want even if they could afford them.

"Yes, I'm sure you'll manage. Don't need dogs for everything. I, for one, wouldn't know what to do with a pack. I'm more interested in horses than hounds. Racers." Now there was a sport worth pursuing. How he adored fine horseflesh.

"Before the freeze, then." It was sudden, and decisive: Paul would make this happen. This meant he'd have to find help, have to find support, a friend with birds and know-how, servants who could serve a crowd. All of this made him itchy -- but he was sure his lawyer would appreciate it.

Make more friends.
More friends meant more supporters, meant more lenders.
You can't trust them to keep being friends after you've taken your money,
but it's for the good of the estate.

He blew out a slow breath, and offered a smile. "It's a good suggestion."

Kit blinked at the abrupt declaration. Clearly the man had not been listening to a word he had just said. Not that it really mattered.e He hadn't said anything important, anyway. Besides, a little motivation could do anyone good, and if half of what he had heard about Paul was true, then the man could use all the motivation he could get.

"Glad to be of help," he said, though he was not entirely certain what he had suggested. "You haven't much time to organize it all , if you want to manage it before the freeze, though."

"I can if it's only five or six of us." And he was already tallying up the list in his mind. Who would come? Who would come and be useful later? Who did he need to ingratiate himself toward? And exactly how much food could he afford. All at once, Paul decided he did need more alcohol; he stood, snatching his glass and swaying for a moment before he settled.

"...ah." He'd already forgotten the man's name, and that was probably no good whatsoever. He'd have remembered it, sober. "Oh. If you are interested, I'll find you here again?"

"Of course. I look forward to it," he said easily, standing himself. He supposed he should have expected such results when he had approached the knackered gentleman in the first place, but he still could not help but wonder just what, if anything, he had gained from the introduction. Then again, one never knew. Something useful may yet come from it all.

"Until then," he nodded. No point in remaining. It was late enough and the idea of heading back to his residence was less tiring than it had been earlier. Besides, he had enough to ponder, now, that his mind ought to be entertained for the remainder of the evening, at least.

We can leave it there! Maybe I'll get a hunt thread started up somewhere. (:
