"Ah, don't worry. I was a trainee, I know the salary." She laughed and playfully ruffled Melvin's hair. Candace was completely unaware of Melvin's touch aversions. At least it didn't last for very long, though she did pause to give him a shocked stare. His hair was so soft it was like petting a puppy oh my goooooood!
She shook her head, forcing those thoughts away. It was negotiation time. She had to keep his budget in mind but Candace wasn't cheap. She had expensive tastes. "The Heart of the Ocean is so overrated. No, I have better taste than that. I like clothes, jewelry, but mostly shoes." Candace had to be careful now; the last thing she wanted was to look like she would do anything for a pair of shoes. "There's a pair of Louboutin heels I wanted last time I took leave, you could see if maybe you could get those.." Oh, wait. Too expensive. She frowned. But...but she wanted them..damnit! "Or maybe something else would be better.."

Melvin knew nothing about women's shoes, which was why most guys didn't buy clothes or shoes for women. It was usually more miss than hit.
Reaching into the books, he took out a piece of paper. "By the time I get leave, those pair of shoes might not be in season anymore. Is it L-o-u-b-o-t-i-n? Is there any other brands you could have instead if I don't find that designer? I don't know if we all get dropped off at the same place when we get leave." He also made another short list. "Also colors? Shoe size?" He looked to her. "I don't want to be in a sea of shoes and not know what to pick. Better if I can just tell the retailer what you want." Which is why most women would just tell me what they wanted exactly, to the tiniest detail. If not, she was getting overpriced clown shoes.
"Unless you have other ideas?" Something a tad easier.

"B-o-u." Candace corrected gently, giving a shrug when he asked for other designers. "Jimmy Choo, Gucci. I'm not actually very picky. Quality shoes, preferably pumps but I'll accept smaller heels, boots and flats. I do have a lot of shoes on the more affordable size, it's just nice to indulge every now and then. As long as it isn't completely garish and tacky I'm happy with almost any shoe. My size is eight, or eight and a half...I can go with you, if you want. To try them on." She shrugged, though she did backtrack a little after that. He didn't know how leave time worked.
"As a trainee you get two days a month. You can choose to use them at any point during the month. They don't have to be all at once. You could, for example, use a day tomorrow and then another day two weeks from now. There's also no 'set time' as to when everyone takes their leave. However, there are consequences to staying out too long depending on how long you're out unauthorized, so keep that in mind." Candace paused to think on if she was missing anything. What was important, what did he need to know? He didn't know a damn thing, apparently. "You can literally go anywhere in the world you want to go except back to where you're from. It's a big no-no, okay? We're supposed to be dead. Can't have people recognizing us and going oh nooooo it's a ghost or oh noooooo they're alive all this time we thought they were dead wait come back don't run away we've missed you so much." Her portrayal of potential contacts from the past was completely deadpan.
"Anyway, most of the things I want are very high-priced." This was followed by a mournful sigh. Melvin wouldn't be able to get most of it unless he saved up, huh? Damnit. That sucked. "But I'll come up with a list of things later. You don't have to get it all, just consider them guidelines of what I like."
Oh, but there was a reason they were doing all this. They were negotiating so she'd help him. <********> what had she done?! Her expression fell when the realization of what she'd just roped herself into occurred to her. "So...I guess you're going to want that golem trip now, huh?"

The thought of not being to go home, the reminder that he was viewed as dead to his friends and family, had his insides dropping down to his feet, and he nodded slowly. "I was told." He couldn't go to his home town, pass his house, peek in through the window to check up on his parents or siblings. The stores, the neighbors, and the places he passed by as a kid would never be visited, and somewhere there was probably a tombstone with his name on it. Morbid curiosity had him wondering what it said, while another part had him glad he would never be allowed near it to know.
"I don't think you want to waste your time off with me." And as a guy, he didn't know how much he'd enjoy watching a girl try on shoes that wasn't his own girlfriend.
"I'm sure I can find something nice for you." Candace was of course aware of what this meant. "I would like to find out where the golems are, how to use them, and for some help. Once I get the hang of it, then our deal is complete." If she only helped him a little, the shoes would be cheap. If she was going to give it her all, he'd reflect that with some shoes that might make his wallet hurt but otherwise help him in the labs much more than money could.
"Do we have a deal?"
