"They never ******** warn anyone about anything here. That's like the first thing you learn man. Trainees are expendable and they don't really give a ******** if you die cause you didn't think s**t out. We had to just hope the quartermaster had s**t to wear some of the times and we only got heads up cause of a ******** oversight." Rep scowled irritably.

"They also ******** sent us to the sahara. Oh and the jungle. Get lots of s**t to wear, you won't regret that. You can thank me when you don't have heat stroke or ******** frostbite."

"I remember the desert at least..." The one with the big centipedes. He ...sorta blanked out after that. "I'll try and remember to be a boy scout and just try to come prepared for the worst." It was better to dress in layers than being stuck someplace he could freeze to death. The only downside was carrying what you wore if it was too hot.

"I've been told a lot that new guys like me don't make it. Not very inspiring to be labeled dead when you are alive." He felt like he had a timer on him, and everyone was placing bets to see when he'd drop. "How long do you have to live before they start believing you might actually stick around for a while?"

"Its a good ******** idea, because the attitude up top as far as trainees are concerned is that they are just ******** human fodder. If they ******** up, or die, or get mangled its just like, vaguely amusing. Its a baptism of fire, surviving to hunter is like, half the battle." he nodded, still not sure if he'd ever make it to hunter himself. He didn't much like the idea of being a trainee forever - menial duties got old fast.

"And people will still be betting on your imminent death even like ******** months after you get here. People only move on when the next batch of pod people wake up. So you'd better hope there are more soon to take the heat off of how vulnerable and killable you are."

In his hood, Massacre snored softly - too much excitement for one day.

"Not really comforting to know that you are the only one rooting for you to live." He would feel like there would be more effort to keep him alive, but this is the world he was in now. This wasn't a safe lab job where the worst that could happen to him was high cholesterol later down the road. The dangers were more sudden and the second between living and dying was up in the air.

It scared the s**t out of him.

"How...long does it usually take to become a hunter? What do you have to do?" Was there a set of requirements or was it just living long enough to meet a time requirement?

"Aye, its no comforting at all, just be glad like, there aren't people out actively ******** hoping that you die. That can be a bit of a downer eventually. As a newbie at least there's like a vague sense of like pitying good intention, no one will probably leave you to die." Rep had pissed off enough people he was aware he'd set himself on shaky footing, not everyone could be trusted any more.

"As for what it takes to be a hunter, I don't know, I'm still a trainee. From what I've seen though it seems like, mostly at the barmy like choice of the division leaders. Your leader thinks you are good enough, then congratulations you get a promotion." He frowned subtly. "Though the downside to being a hunter? They seem to die even ******** more than trainees." It hurt to admit it, given how important Jordan was and the fact he'd been recently promoted, new room, reduced survival chances.

"So you can't really win here, damned if you do, damned if you don't, its not about talent, its about luck and survival instincts of a ******** fox. Just be glad you aren't in sun, apparently we have like the most rediculous ******** mortality rate, life get to stay off the front line..most of the time."

PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2012 9:25 pm

"Can't say that doesn't suck. Thought things would be just a bit better if I managed to live till promotion. Seems it just keeps getting better instead." He sighed, jerking back on the leashes again when a few of the pets started nipping at each other.

"So aside from sparring, eating, sleeping, and hoping today isn't your last day on Earth, what else you do around here?" There had to be something they looked forward to each day having to do this.

"Me? Eh, there actually isn't much s**t to do. Training mostly. Got to keep on top of my game as a sun and whatever, it's all about being like prime ******** physical specimen. Maybe in Life you can survive by being smart, in Sun you survive by being strong and with like ******** razor honed co-ordination. I intend to survive so I spend a lot of time just doing like..physical s**t I guess. Swimming, running, gym workout and other less boring physical s**t too." he shrugged.

"But other than that I guess I play games - my .." again that damned terminology issue "moon has the keys to the life division assistant's office, so I can go there and play some stuff." He looked wistful. "Don't have my own ******** PC any more so can't watch anything or browse around. Reading's out."

"Eh I guess twitter?" That was an understatement, he spent a large proportion of his time on the network, communication was important for him. "Oh and shore leave, everyone looks forward to leave."
PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2012 9:52 pm

"I didn't even know there was a swimming pool." He said. "I just found where the gym was." This place honestly needed a map with a nice key that showed all the facilities that could be used. If being physical was the major pasttime, then he would have assumed that he would be given a nice little list.

This isn't Hogwarts.

Damnit!

Melvin just brushed that off for now, and looked back at Rep, turning the loop to head back to the labs. He did notice the hesitation each time Rep talked about His Moon, and it was said enough for him to note that. "Your Moon. Ace, was it?" He had to see who this 'Ace' was if he ever met him. Not that he'd actively seek him out. It was just good to make connections to what he learned.

"Well it must be nice to have a PC. I can't eve get my laptop to work. Going to cost me just to get it working here." A lot apparently. "I guess you guys find out how to entertain yourselves." There was bound to be other things to do.

"Why is reading out? I've already been to the library. The selection wasn't....that bad." It was still pretty outdated.

"There isn't. Well not one that the trainees get to use. I've heard rumours the higher ups get their own private pool but its not something I think I'll ever see. I go swimming in the sea. If you don't go too far out its not too ******** bad really."

Rep hesitated again at the question about Ace, almost losing his usual confidence as he seemed to try and find a way to sort out his thoughts. "Well. Like. That's what I call him. It's like a eh.." < A pet name> "No. I mean. Sorry, my weapon." he explained apologetically. "Its a nickname. His other name's Harrison." He dragged the r out a little too long, something subtly unusual about the way he pronounced it, unfamiliar saying it to anyone other than the man himself. "That's probably what you'd know him as."

"Aye you have to make your own entertainment though, or it gets pretty ******** intolerable. I'm surprised no one's started like poker nights and s**t. Or well, maybe they have and I've not been invited." he laughed a little bitterly.

"Reading's out man cause I'm way too ******** slow if you must know. Books bore the s**t out of me, by the time I get to the end of a paragraph, I've forgotten what the ******** I read at the start. I leave it up to the nerds to read them."

"Swimming in the sea? Isn't that a bit dangerous? Seems like a long way to walk just to go for a dip." He hadn't been to the beach in a long time, but sometimes when he stepped outside in the humid weather, he wished he could go swimming. Overcast with fog did nothing to make it any less hot outside.

"Never met Harrison. Probably will though. Another hunter told me how important the Moons were." Jordan had been just as helpful as Rep had been to tell him a lot about being a hunter. Then again, a lot of people were filling him in.

"I wouldn't mind a poker night, but probably be no fun without whiskey." He wished he could just hang around in a nice round table, talking, and splitting a deck. Not that he liked the cigar smell, but it was nice to just do the more clique macho night in. Then again, he didn't have much friends here.

"It's no too bad." he said "Nothing dangerous has ever tried to eat me and I spent ******** months bathing in it. Besides, if something like a shark tried to bite me at this point I'd punch it in the ******** mouth the way I did to like, dragons and s**t that tried to do the same thing." The air got a right hook to illustrate. "I kind of like to walk along the beach when I can't be ******** arsed dealing with people and usually its nice to just dive in when I want and when it's too ******** hot - which is always." He gestured vaguely northwards. "There's some good ******** rocks up that way that when the tide's in you can just dive off of without getting like maimed or swept away"

"As for Ace, he's the best moon, they aren't all as amazing as him, like I mean, they are good but not quite that good. So don't be disappointed in the other ones after meeting him, they try hard mostly. Cept Marcus," he corrected, "he's a douchebottle to me so he can go ******** dive at low tide."

The word whiskey got Melvin a very sharp keen smile. "Oh I've got whiskey, I've actually got quite a bit, I blew a lot of ******** wages on leave for it. You find anything interesting to trade for it I might just part with it, or at the very least let you visit Rep's bar some night. Alcohol's pretty important here, good for like, cutting loose and s**t." Plus, he thought, it might be hilarious to see the uptight nerd with a bit of alcohol in his system.

PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2012 11:44 pm

He had to smile at that. "Well, if I ever get lucky enough to find anything worth trading, I'll be sure to find you." He had wanted a stiff drink the moment he woke from the pods and been told he was there for several years. Then there was the mission, and the attack from Puff the Magic Ghost Fog. There were plenty of reasons to want to get drink, and he hadn't been here long.

"I can see how needing a drink often would make sense around here." Considering all they had to go through.

The labs showed up ahead.

"Feel free. I keep a stash handy for the people who learn the right kind of bargaining. And you might not get shore leave of your own for a while, I know I didn't for what felt like ******** ever. I've not needed it as much as I thought lately but keeping it for a rainy day's a good idea, cause those ******** days come along when you least expect them on this shithole."

Mass rolled onto his back in Rep's hood and kicked his hooves along with some grand dream he was having.

"Hour's almost up, good timing. Better get them back in their holding pens."
PostPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 3:44 pm

Melvin sighed. "Really? I have to wait that long?" He had been hoping in a month or so he would be able to actually use the money he gained and go out of here. Even a month here and he was already feeling a bit stir crazy. Maybe he'd just go ahead and get his laptop in to get fixed while he could. Then again, he heard it was pretty pricey and he didn't get much for that. His ipod would be great if he could plug it into his laptop, but without the other, he was out of luck. That is unless he could use the computers in the labs. That was a thought.

Checking the minipets, who were all but walking about at this point, looking a bit lethargic, he pulled on the leash to urge them to the labs.

"Nice hanging with you. Seems your bull tired himself out with all that walking." Or none of that walking at all.

He opened the door and walked into the labs.
