Pasha paused, taking in the brightly colored drinks in their delicate glass goblets. Deaf? She stared at them while Rivener spoke, watching the light play across the crystalline surfaces. Like reflections on ice.

"I don't fear people who are powerful." She chose her words carefully, and it was obvious. The Muse was not trying to sound wise, nor profound. Melisande was honestly searching for the best way to express herself. She touched the rim of the first goblet gingerly. "I fear people without mercy."

That last final splintering crack, not of ice, but of Roux's skull shattering.

Melisande winced at the memory, and that was all it took. An accident. The goblet shattered…that same haunting sound. The pink liquid soaked slowly into the dirt. Pasha swallowed, and put her own glass in the missing goblets place.

”To the fallen.” She toasted softly, and picked up with second goblet. She’d already destroyed someone else’s picnic. Zul had destroyed far more than that. If the other Sigel didn’t understand that already…

With her free hand, she offered Rivener the last glass, the purple drink sloshing high against the crystalline sides. Distantly, the Muse hoped they were more than just juice. It was the first time she truly felt like she wanted a drink.

As the pink liquid soaked into the ground below the two Sigels, the grass there seemed to slowly vanish while a nearby dandelion became too tiny to be noticed by the naked eye. Perhaps these drinks were indeed not what they seemed.

Rivener frowned in confusion. People without mercy? What in the world was Melisande talking ab-

Crash.

Rivener flinched as the goblet shattered, expecting something to happen... When nothing did (at least not that he noticed, too busy was he watching the Muse), he let out a soft breath and inched forward uneasily, accepting the last goblet and frowning into the liquid mistrustfully. With everything else they'd seen in here so far, drinking from some mysterious glass seemed the worst idea...

He clinked his goblet to Melisande's, then brought it to his lips and waited for her to do the same. He felt odd to have a beer bottle in one hand, a goblet in the other, so after taking a tiny sip of the Purple concoction, Riv quickly placed the goblet back on the table.

"What do you mean by that? Why do you think Zul is someone without mercy?" It must have something to do with Roux- that was the only time Riv knew Meli and Zul to have interacted, and Rivener himself had been unconscious for a good chunk of it...

Pasha was about to take a sip in honor of her toast, when Rivener spoke. Shock was written clearly across her face at his words, and she set her goblet down untested.

"Didn't you...see? What he did?" She tried to remember the other details, of Rivener, of Laz. Both had been injured, and badly...but...the only image she could clearly conjure up was of Zul. His hands...Roux's jaws...

Melisande blinked back tears, but only for a moment. Tears didn't come as easy as they once did. She had set the glass down a little less than gracefully, and the orange drink splashed over the rim and onto her pale hand. "Roux wasn't himself. And Zul...he had already won." Pasha sounded miserable. Worse than that, the Muse sounded guilty. "You remember, don't you? He used to be our friend." Her voice was almost inaudible, face lowered.

Absently, she brought her hand to her face, putting her fingertip in her mouth like she had when she'd pricked it to get rid of the last of the spilled orange liquid. It tasted strange, but the that was the last thing on Melisande's mind. It had been so long, and she'd never spoken of that night. Now she was sure that the fledgling understanding between them would shatter, and Rivener would rage at her...

...but perhaps she deserved that. She'd been the only one uninjured, and she hadn't even tried to stop Zul before it was too late.

If the Sigels were hoping for something dramatic to happen, it never did. But that couldn't be, right? All liquids had been tested so something must have happened. Well whatever, maybe they should just take the exit and be on their way.

Rivener blinked, listening to the Muse's recounting, frowning in puzzlement still. Rivener hadn't seen, but he knew Zul had killed Roux. By the way Meli was now reacting to it, the Scorpion could paint a rather accurate picture of what might have happened. His Flower had never gone into the details of it and Rivener had never asked... With a soft sigh, the Scorpion advanced and raised his hand, hesitating only a moment before reaching to touch her hair, tucking a stray blond curl behind one of those pinned blossoms. He spoke softly, but there was a resolute frown on his face.

"I didn't see, no. And I realize Roux was our friend... But you have to understand, Roux was broken inside. He used to love me, I think I was the closest to him out of most Raevans, and he tried to kill me, Melisande. He had gone insane. I doubt there was anything we could have done to make him return to the way he was. If he hadn't died, what would we have done? Kept him prisoner at the Lab, tried to cure him? And during that time, how many more people would Roux hurt? Zul did what he had to do to protect his kin. Zul did what would keep us all safe. It isn't always pleasant, and it isn't always the easiest thing to stomach doing, but someone has to make these decisions, do these deeds that aren't glorious or wonderful. Zul did what he did because he had mercy. He ended Roux's suffering."

He hoped she would understand. He hoped he hadn't missed something important by being unconscious, but as he understood things, Zul had been in the right and probably saved their lives.

"Come on, let's keep going." The hand that had been touching her dropped to hover near her back, guiding her towards the exit as gently as he could. He felt awkward now, wondered if she would be unable to accept something dark but necessary... Maybe she'd dislike him too, now, for agreeing with Zul's actions that day.

Until a few minutes ago, Melisande had been having fun in the maze. She wouldn't have wanted to leave even if they'd had the chance. Now, though, the Muse nodded and let herself be steered towards the exit. Rivener was trying to be kind, she knew that...from his gentle words to his sweet gesture as he tried to fix her hair. But he hadn't seen, and Pasha didn't want to argue.

Could they have kept him prisoner? Yes. That was what you did with monsters! Could they have tried to remake him? Yes...though she hadn't known that at the time. Instead, she simply glanced up and met his eyes once, only for a moment.

How she felt was written there, clearly. She was sad for Rivener, afraid for him, because she knew there was nothing she could say to convince the other Sigel. Because he truly seemed to respect someone that Melisande feared...knew...was just as dangerous as Roux had been.

"I'm sorry that I couldn't help. I couldn't help any of them." And I won't be able to help you, either.

Seems one of those liquids was the correct one and the exit allows you to walk through it smoothly with no problems.

Rivener sighed, aware that the mood had just dropped. No, not just dropped- it had plunged. Right off the deep end. Then crashed to the floor and exploded. He'd hoped this trek together in the maze might have built some kind of friendship, and he still hoped it would, but how to defeat this sudden heavy, oppressive atmosphere? How to make her see that Zul wasn't this beast she thought he was? Yes, he'd seen that look, read its meaning.

They left that room and returned to the narrower hallways. Riv tried to sketch a smile, shrugging a shoulder. "Hey, there's no need to be sorry. I'm still here, still alive, still goin'. Takes more than a bit of frost to take me down. And just the fact that you WANT to help someone is helpful. You'll have your moment someday, I'm sure. C'mon, cheer up. Let's not think about nasty stuff, hm? This is a party! Why don't you sing us a party song?"
PostPosted: Tue Jul 24, 2012 8:07 pm

"A party song?" Melisande slowed, staring at Rivener. His suggestion was unexpected, so ridiculous, that the Muse was shocked. Suddenly, she smiled. Her laugh broke through the tension.

"A party song?" Tears filled her blue eyes as she laughed, but they didn't spill. If he didn't want to talk about it, she wouldn't make him. But she wasn't a child! If he wanted, though, she could act like one.

"How about you sing a party song." She wiped at her eyes with the back of her hand, and followed him through the junction, goblets forgotten. "That would cheer me up!"

Rivener grinned as his suggestion brought her to near-tears laughter, though he nursed a rather thorough blush of embarrassment. He hadn't thought his suggestion THAT funny! She must know a few songs for the occassion, right? They came upon a T-junction, and without thinking on the matter Rivener turned left, running a hand up through his hair and chuckling along with her laughter. HER suggestion was the ridiculous one, in his opinion!

"Oh, you do NOT want me singing. Trust me. It's... It's like drowned cat meets angry crow. I am tone-deaf. My sense of rhythm is all screwy. I don't listen to music! I don't know any song at all!" He laughed, coming short of lies and excuses, knowing full well she was likely not believing a word of it. "I really do sing horribly. But if it'll cheer you up, errr, lemme think here." He thought, tapping his chin... of course when you were on the spot like that, you couldn't think of a damned thing. The only thing that came to mind was....

"Alright here goes. I'm doing for you, so no mocking! Ahem. Twinkle twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above-... Ah dammit, I forget the rest. I'm horrible at this." He laughed now too, blushing dark red. That hadn't even been ANY good, even before he forgot the words to one of the most commonly-known tunes ever.

(Next post: Staff - Encounter!)

Melisande's smile was still sad, but it dimpled as Rivener continued with his litany of excuses. For a moment, as he sang she was riveted. It was exciting to hear someone else sing, even if their heart wasn't in it!

The moment passed as soon as he stopped, and her wings fluffed and settled back into place. "Mock you? I wouldn't." Her eyes were still bright from the last of the tears, wide and sincere. "After you've taught me so much? Like...what a drowned cat and an angry crow sound like? And what coffee-flavored looks like?"

She had the grace to blush as she teased him, at least. Pasha looked away, knowing she would start smiling if she didn't, and took a peek at the maze around them. She hadn't paid much attention to their last few turns.

Where were they?

For the first time, the thrill of possibly being lost tickled through her.

You’ve reached an area that seems normal enough, but the moment you take a step forward you immediately notice something is most definitely off. The birds and other small fauna running about freeze in place and seem to shift with static interference. Trees and bushes that were there just a moment before have giant boxes with X’s in them standing in as makeshift placeholders. Another moment and everything goes back to normal, only for it to repeat again and again as you move through this area.

Rivener scoffed, running his hand through his hair one more time, hiding behind his arm for a second to let his cheeks cool down from that flush. He was smirking when he looked back at the pale-haired girl, once more surprised to see her teasing him, exercising that sense of humor he hadn't known she possessed. "Yeah, well... You better remember that sound, because you aren't going to hear it again. I-... What the hell?!"

Riv came up short as he spotted the first of the "glitches". He'd watched the Matrix, he knew what this was! But to see it in real life... When suddenly a box with an X appeared, like a broken jpeg, Rivener burst out laughing, almost doubled over as he clutched his middle, wings flapping softly to keep him upright. He pointed, and kept going through the glitchy part of the maze, unable to say anything, laughing too hard, pointing at all the X-boxes, rubbing at his eyes.

It even took a moment after they'd left that area for the Scorpion to gather himself enough to speak again. "So I guess we know how Kyou did this. Magic my a**- it's just some kind of projection, and his graphics are all messed up!"

Pasha was baffled, but she couldn't help but smile as she watched Rivener laugh. In that moment, she could have hugged him. His laugh, his true laugh, was so loud and rolling and alive. Melisande shook her head, but didn't ask. There was no way the explanation could be as enchanting as his reaction!

Instead, the Muse drifted into the scene, and reached for a fluctuating bird...yanking her hand back the moment it unfroze and burst again into flight. "Well, at least you don't have to worry about the dolls..."

Melisande floated back for the Sigel and offered her hand...a hint of a shy smile on her pink lips. "Let's go."
