Danny's face was hopeful as Roch came in the room, but the expression dropped as soon as she saw the empty space behind him. She was really gone.
A pit opened in Danny stomach as she watched Roch break down in front of her. It was honestly like having to watch her mother cry- that is to say, the worst feeling in the world. She'd never seen him like this, so broken up about something. She couldn't say she didn't relate. Amphi was her best friend too.
She hesitated, putting a hand on his arm and rubbing it slowly. Danny didn't know if he'd want a hug, if he'd yell at her, if he'd start crying. It was absolutely terrifying not knowing how to react to Roch. He was the one person she didn't have to think about it with.
Quietly, she said, "D'you want to be alone?"

"I already am," he said quietly. Then he shook his head. "Sorry... I didn't mean that--I just-- please, Danny, I need to..." He took a deep breath. "I only met her, what, a month ago," he said with a bitter laugh. "How does this hurt so badly?"

Danny didn't move. She tried to watch his reactions, judge a response, act upon it.
There was nothing. Literally nothing to go on. No cocky smile she could shove him for. No stupid comment she could get huffy about. Just real sadness that she had no clue how to handle. She wasn't even hurt by the fact that he said he was alone when she was right there.
So she said whatever came to mind. "I ... really don't know what to say. I don't think there's anything I can say. I can't tell you she'll be okay and it's really scary." Her hand was shaking so she pulled it away from Roch's shoulder. "She was my first ghoul friend too," she said sadly.
She took a deep breath. "Yin and Mei are gone too," she offered, not thinking that Roch would care, but just finding an excuse to talk. "Yin ..." She looked over at Roch and dropped it immediately. It wasn't the time. "Mei was so pretty. She protected me from one of them, and then she got netted too." She didn't say it, but the guilt was written across her face in a bold ink.

He was silent, taking in her words without really even hearing them. So Amphi wasn't the only one stolen from them. "I just--I wish--" he said. "I wish I had said jack it and walked out. I wish we all had. I knew better, Danny. I KNEW." He took a deep breath. "I can't believe my last conversation with her is going to be about those jackin' men on scream novels," he said with disgust. "I should have told her--I dunno, that I loved her or something, or kissed her, or--"
He went silent. "Danny. Can you... can you leave? Please?"

Danny didn't feel anything, that was the worst part. Other than some mild trembling, nothing seemed to come. No great earthquakes shaking her body, nothing. Danny was a crier, and she wasn't crying.
"Yeah," was all she said. Any other day she would've insisted upon staying and been obnoxious about it until he let her. They just sort of worked that way.
Now she found herself outside his door, just standing there with nothing to do. Going to Rikki's would've made her miserable. She'd just have to lay there watching Rikki sleep while nothing came to her. Her own dorm seemed a million miles away, and unlike Roch she didn't want to be alone.
So she just sat there outside his door and didn't move at all. She didn't fall asleep- that would've been a blessing. Roch was right. It'd only been a month, but everything hurt.

He sat there, alone, staring into nothingness for a long moment, then he pulled out his cell phone, tapping the screen and staring at the picture of the smiling mermaid that was his background. "Sunshine and bubbles," he whispered as he laid down on the bed, one knee bent. A single tear crept down his cheek as he brought the camera to his mouth, kissing her image softly. then he laid it on his chest.
