"Really now, a suitable pace?" he circled, slowly, inching closer in this manner by degrees, "her pace, would that be? I do believe I had never before seen a doe who left you before you bid her leaving. A fine pace it is, wouldn't you say?"

His eyes narrowed, his gaze intensifying by the second. Down's voice was low, steady with clear warning: "Light Up, enough."

He did not quite flinch, but his glowing eyes flickered briefly and the elegant, taunting drawl paused. When it picked up again, it is rather less amused, "You should have kept to your brainless wenches. She'd play you for a fool, you're not clever enough for it." Then, as if frightened that he might draw swift retribution for his words, he went on without reply, slipping into less dangerous jibes, "Perhaps you might simply be looking to be played for once, having played so many? Bored of that predictable game? After all, you could never stay a normal dalliance, woo as lovers do - you wouldn't know how to keep a doe if your life depended on it, merely send them packing."

"Oh? Is that what you think? Ridiculous." He dismissed the notion, certainly not lacking in pride. "The basest of bucks manage to win hearts with their bumbling. I can be as romantic as any heartfelt, lovelorn buck, without the distasteful details." Down strolled a contemplative half-circle. "Such a simple notion, this 'romance', this kindness and dedication and the kind of foolishly charming sweetness, ah - it is simplicity itself."

The incredulity that met this claim was utterly genuine. "You? Romantic? Preposterous," the bitterness that laced his dismissal, too, unplanned, "you are incapable of such expressions."

"So you still doubt me." He stated, tone low and impassive. "Then you leave me no choice." Down approached the dark buck, leaning in to press his cheek against his, sliding against velveteen fur to whisper into his ear: "I'll simply have to show you, dear brother."

That touch. Even as the faint wings around that shining gaze had neared, he did not expect to feel the consummate heat of his skin; every fibre of his being froze in place upon that touch. He could hear nothing but that sinuous whisper, and the frantic roar of blood, pounding, like thunder, with the hammering of his heart as he drew flesh against flesh. For once, all words had died upon that clever tongue, and he could only wait in silence...

He withdrew and smirked, relishing Light Up’s momentary weakness altogether too much as he blithely concluded "I shall just have to find a doe to woo, to charm and romance, and you will see." And once he finished articulating his goal, Down turned on his heels and started to saunter off.

...and remained in silence, the burning stare unmoving from its fixedness upon that proud retreat; there was not much left to say past the all-swallowing turmoil tight and tearing in his chest that he knew by the name of hate.
