Riyo couldn't quite understand that. Just... Wanting to be with someone. Be in their presence without really needing to interact. That was because Riyo was more independent than any ghoul really needed to be. Living alone, you learned to chalk visitations and socialization up to necessity. Only getting it when you really needed it. The demoness's brow furrowed as she tried to wrap her head around the concept, though it seemed such a thing was lost to her.
When the subject changed to books, her face looked somewhat horrified when Hel said she hated them. "You... Hate them?"
As the book dropped inbetween the duo, clawed fingers reached down to touch the cover, as if just feeling the texture would somehow let the feline know if it was a book she wanted to read or not. "Eat Prey Love? It sounds like some kind of sleazy romance novel." Which... The ghoul would never admit she had read her fair share. Most of which were hidden behind the nonfiction section of her bookcase cough cough.
Though a thought occurred to her. One she had never quite had before. Like the situation and conversation were flint and steel and her idea was the odd spark that managed to catch. "... What if I read it to you?" The ghoul suggested nervously, her glance shooting to the cats that surrounded them. It sounded so stupid when she said it out loud. "I'm sure uh.. We could get some kind of kick out of it."

“Ya. I hate them. I think reading is a waste of time, especially when I could be out and doing something. I come from a proud culture were we tell stories through word of mouth.” She watched Riyo run her claws along the book, and she snorted. “I wish it was some kind of sleazy romance novel, ugh. It is a book about…self-discovery and finding one’s…ghoul power or some s**t.”
The reaper ran a finer along the rim of her cup, just content to fall silent for a bit until Riyo made a rather surprising offer. Now…it was a far cry from how excited Hel could usually get…but the way the reaper’s eyes lit up even the slightest was unmistakeable. “…Really?” Her voice rose a bit in a hopeful tone. “…You would?” It was probably the only way Hel could make it through a book…was if someone read it to her.

One person's escape from reality was another's waste of time, she guessed. "Self discovery? Oh, it's one of those books." Yeah, now Riyo kinda wished it was some kind of sleazy romance novel too.
But... The feline had offered to read it, and it looked as if it might be the only thing that would cheer Hel up, even if it was only a little bit. Before Riyo agreed, she polished off the cup of tea and scooped the collection of words up into her hands. "I suppose. But only once, and we're not doing it on the floor. My butt will go numb if we sit here much longer." Sure. She loved her hard wood floor, but it was not something one sat on for prolonged periods of time.
The book was cast aside momentarily in favor of taking the teacups to the sink, then reclaimed as the feline's bare feet scooted across the floor and onto the ample sized bed with a translucent red canopy. Yes, she certainly lived in luxury. Even satin sheets to top it. "Hop up. Let auntie Riyo tell you a magical story about feminism and how to get on with your life."

“Ya…it is one of those books.” Hel replied. “Ha…fair enough…” The ghoul pushed herself off of the floor, and picked up her bag. “Hope you do not mind…I brought eye scream and it is probably on its way to melting…” Hel then just went ahead and stuffed two containers into Riyo’s freezer. She was a ‘help herself’ guest. Taking the other one, Hel pulled off the lid and grabbed a spoon, following Riyo back to the bed.
Was she getting in that nice bed with a tub of eye scream? Hel yeah she was. The ghoul hopped right in, and settled next to Riyo with a soft amused snort. Feminism and how to go on with her life. “My body is ready.” Hel replied with a very faint smirk, scooping a large helping of eye scream right into her mouth.

Oh. Great. Eyescream. No no, you go right on Hel. Help yourself. Riyo was totally okay with you putting your stuff all over hers.
It wasn't like there was much aside from ScreeV dinners and ice in there anyways. Obviously Riyo didn't cook much... If ever.
The book cracked open and Riyo had begun to skim, but when Hel returned with one of the tubs and crawled up in bed with it, the demon's face grew srs.

"Hel. I bought these sheets a couple of years back, and since then no liquid has been spilled on or near the bed. I swear to Jack if a drop of that s**t gets on them, I will make you pay the dry cleaning bill."

Hel didn’t seem scared at all as she just ate more eye scream.
“Ya, ya.” She waved her spoon dismissively. “Live a little. If I need seeds for the bill, I will go get them from that pouch of silver seeds in the Wishing Well.” She smirked at the ghoul a bit and then kept on eating. She was waiting patiently to hear Riyo start reading.

Riyo's face clearly stated she'd remember Hel's words should disaster occur, but said nothing else. She could only get so mad at the reaper today, after all.
"Alright then." The feline adjusted herself so that she was propped up by cushiony pillows as she turned to the first page, clearing her throat dramatically before she read out the first line. It was awkward at first, having such a quiet task turned into what almost amounted to a play.
Her tone was clear and concise as she continued, only slipping up a handful of times with her words. She tried to put feeling into it, at least when Riyo understood what was going on. Slowly but surely, she found herself relating to the character's plight. Having what most people dreamed of, yet being so discontent and sick with it. Stepping out of one's comfort zone for the sake of finding satisfaction in a life that had grown uncomfortable.
There were a few times she'd wanted to stop, but the way Hel looked at her made the feline press on, through the enjoyment of good food, the journey of self-discovery, and the almost inevitable experience of falling in love again.
"And they all lived happily ever after. The end." Okay, so it really didn't end that way, but it seemed appropriate.
Slamming the book closed, Riyo let out a long-winded sigh and looked at her valkyrie friend. "Feel better now?" Holy s**t, why was it so dark in here?

Hel settled in next to the ghoul, quietly working on her tub of eye scream as she listened.
First, the reaper was pretty non-invested in it. It was just a stupid story that she needed to get through in order for Hyde to work with her again, but as she sat and listened to Riyo’s clear, concise voice read more and more into the story…she found herself relating too. It was weird, but Hel became more invested, more moved, and more compelled. She found herself hanging off of every word the cat demoness red, and every time it seemed like she would stop, Hel had a pleading look for her to continue.
Hel was…pretty amazed.
This ghoul left everything behind for a year in search of herself. She ate lots of good food for four months, did some kind of…trolling and meditation for four months, and then focused on love for fourth months and found her one true love at the end of it.
After Riyo finished, Hel was sitting there with a dazed look. Like a kid who had just been shown the greatest magic trick. Wow…she was just…so impressed. This ghoul…she went on an epic journey to better herself…and she worked hard too, and was rewarded at the end of it. At Riyo’s question, the ghoul blinked, coming back around as she focused on her. “…Yes…and no?” Hel chuckled a bit. “…I mean…I really…really want to go do something now…I say I would want to go away for a year…but that is probably not realistic while I am at Amity, ya know? But my mentor said I need to channel all my…energy into some kind of project now before I can go back to him…”

Riyo was... Kinda happy that Hel had been focused on her the whole time she read. It felt good to be paid attention to, whether the ghoul cared to admit it or not.
Setting the book on her nightstand, Riyo rolled to her side and propped her head up with her arm. "I think I'd like that too, honestly." Riyo hadn't been through a crippling divorce or breakup, per se... But she still lacked a lot of self. To go on a trip for solely discovering one's sense of self would be... Wonderful. It could, however, wait until she was out of school. After all, school had helped more on this subject than the demon dared to say. She had already figured out so much of what was really her and what was just the influence of her mother.
"I think that sounds like a great idea. Something time consuming to take your mind off all the things you don't want to think about. Moreover, the success of it could be just one more step out of that pit." Riyo could be encouraging. Especially after a good story.

Luckily, Hel had not spilled a drop of eye scream onto the sheets, and after she was done with the tub, it was placed safely on a nightstand. The ghoul flopped onto her stomach, but angled in a way so that she was facing the cat demoness. Her brows furrowed and one could tell that she was doing something dangerous. She was thinking. “…Maybe…sometime after school…we should go on a journey!” Why was she saying we? Who knew. “I mean…I think we are still young enough where we can pick up and leave, ya know? My mother can not pick up and leave because she is so settled now, ya know? She has roots…”
Hel tapped her chin a bit, and smiled softly at Riyo’s words. “…Thank you, friend.” She replied earnestly. “I am still wracking my brain on what I can do…but ah!” She wiggled closer to the cat demoness, as if she was about to impart on her a great secret. “…I think I may have an idea…you see, one of the reapers has foxfires that he shaves…and it was been a dream of mine since I got here to make a blanket out of foxfire fur…and he has supplied me with a ton thus far…! Dreamdust friend, dreamdust…it would be a gorgeous blanket…so soft too, ya?”

A journey? With Hel?
To anyone who watched them fight, it sounded like a nightmare. The two of them, however, knew much better than that. In public, they raised their fists. In private, they placed hands over the others. Like some sort of secret affair of emotions.
"I think... I'd like that." If Riyo could somehow find another excuse to travel away from the company. The truth, the future, what she was going to do in the name of self-preservation... It wasn't clear to her yet, and it wouldn't be until she was cornered like an animal again.
But she said nothing of it. Confirming positive things. That's what Hel needed right now. They weren't lies. Riyo just wasn't giving her the whole truth.
Like a good ghoul, the cat demon didn't interrupt as Hel described her idea. A dream to make a blanket of foxfire fur? It sounded absurd to her. "It sounds absurd to me." Okay, well great going Riyo what was that about positive enforcement. "But, if it's your dream, I think you should go for it and prove me wrong." At least she could redeem herself a little. "I will admit... That does sound very soft."

Hel managed a small grin before it faded. “I think I would like that too…I mean…I guess…I am a pretty free ghoul right now…huh? I can do whatever I want, when I want…” The reaper trailed off for a moment before looking a bit depressed and sighed softly. Apparently the fact that she was a free, single ghoul still wasn’t a happy thing.
As Riyo expressed her disbelief over the idea though, Hel perked back up. “Well…you thought you would not have friends and let go of the past too, ya? Those were pretty absurd, right?” ZING. She smirked. “Ya, I will prove you wrong, and then I will rub your face in it, and it will be ******** soft.” Rub Riyo’s face all in that foxfire blanket.

s**t. There they went again. If Riyo hadn't known Mot prior to this, she probably would've marched over to his dorm and stomped that boil right in the d**k just because she had to suffer through a normally optimistic person being so depressed. But, Mot wasn't an irrational person. Whatever the reason (which she really, really wanted to know but kept from asking), it was probably for the better.
Seemed like Riyo's reverse psychology encouragement had worked... Somehow. "If it's that soft, I look forward to it." The ghoul smirked, though the more she thought about her own absurd ideas, the more she realized how much she owed to the people around her. "Just think.. If I'd never enrolled and met all of you, I'd still be in that place. Claiming my existence through the sound of settling. Walking through life... Numb." The ghoul grew silent for a moment, eying the still spotless bedsheets. "I suppose you don't realize how bad something is until you're shown how much better it can be."

The reaper rolled onto her back and looked over at Riyo now, nodding her head a bit. “Oh ya, very soft.” She reaffirmed once more.
“Heh…ya.” Numb. Hel had no idea what it really meant to feel numb. Sometimes her heart would stop aching briefly…and maybe that was being numb…but over all? No. She never knew that. The reaper mulled over Riyo’s last statement as well. “…Ya. I think I can see it...just…never settle for mediocre, ya…? Always try aiming for something better. Always.”

"Yeah. I think that's the only life I want to try for anymore." Something better. Something she could be happy about.
Only for a moment did the ghoul look past Hel and out the window. "It's night time already..." Riyo had never had the time to read a book straight through. It was a little amazing that they had put so much time into it. Certainly didn't feel like it.
"Whelp. You know where the door is. I think I'll be sleeping now." The feline yawned out and rolled over. No need to change. These clothes would work just fine.
