High School : What A Change

Everyone is always ready to get older; to be 16, 18, 21, older. Those ages mean something right? They are a milestone that all people wish to reach and then cannot wait to partake in the activities of their ages. Pepita felt different. She was not ready to be in high school, especially with the changes she could not see coming. Middle school was a scary change, especially after six years of the same school.

The first day of high school was a half a day, simple enough. Pepita managed to make it though without feeling too freaked out, except each class she had a new person assigned to her to make sure she made it to her classes ok. It was an awkward moment while she sat patiently waiting for someone in the class to volunteer and sometimes it took quite a bit of time. Obviously no one wanted to be seen running around and helping the “Blind girl.” Most the people that ended up helping her out where girls, although in her English class it was some guy she had never met. He tried to talk to her all the way to her other class but it was awkward and all Pepita could do was make noises that resembled words. Hopefully that poor boy wouldn’t have to go through that again. At the end of the day she was helped out to the front of the school by a teacher and left to wait on her ride. Her oldest brother was supposed to pick her up from school and head home. It took him a while to show up and Pepita could hear people walking by her, whispering as if they thought she was deaf. At one point, she almost blurted out that she was blind, not deaf when she overheard her name mentioned. Luckily, she was too shy to do so and her brother showed up just I time.

Upon arriving home, Pepita gave her parents her paper work for school, did some chores, and then spent the rest of her day upstairs sketching out ideas for a new dress she wanted. This one was inspired by the little information she knew about her mother’s side of the family and the Maori people. Pepita felt pride in that side, but to tell the truth she knew very little about it at all. It was ok though; looking up more information was on her to do list, along with many other things.

The next day, a Friday, Pepita remembered it well because It was also the 13th, which automatically meant bad luck, yay. That morning she knocked her breakfast off the table while reaching for her drink. Luckily for her mom, who cleaned it up, it was just some toaster heated waffles with a little bit of syrup. Pepita had eaten most of what she wanted so it wasn’t too bad, just a rather annoying way to start off the day. The school bus was late picking her up, which in turn made her late for class. That was not something she wanted. Have you ever walked in class late, everyone stares at you while the teacher plays 20 questions to figure out why you couldn’t get your but into their room on time. When she got to class, and during the interrogation, Pepita could hear some whispers but she could not make out what was being said.

After homeroom, some brunette haired girl with a pink dress and white bolero walked her to her next class. She seemed rather....air headed to put it likely. As it turns out she was one of the more popular girls but she was actually in all honors classes, who knew?

The day seemed fine after that, up until after lunch. One of the people Pepita use to be friends with in middle school was standing in the hall way as Pepita made her way around to try and get to her next class. Instead of moving out of the way, like most people did when Pepita came by, the girl just stood there, telling her friends how she wouldn’t move if she didn’t want to. Too bad because that meant a nice slap with a walking cane on accident. The minute the rubber scuffed across the girl’s shoes, Pepita knew she was in trouble. The cane ended up slapping the girl in the ankle since the rubber tip bounced off her white shoes. “Oh my!” Pepita exclaimed. “I am so sorry! I didn’t know you where there. Are you ok?” Obviously she know she was in the way or she would have been a bit more careful; however, the other female, Claudia, didn’t see it that way.

Oh wow. You think just because you have special classes and can’t see you can just bump into anyone you want? I think that is really pathetic.” Claudia was fuming because her shoes were now destroyed and her ankle was throbbing. Oh and Pepita was blind and , in Claudia’s own words, clueless. “If you were my daughter I would have given you up when you became a freak.” At this point the other girl was just trying to get to Pepita.

I-I said I’m sorry.” And with that Pepita quickly turned and headed away from the girl, her friends, and the small group that was forming around them. She had turned just in time to hear one of the people in the crowd say something about how they thought Pepita might be mentally challenged and it was wrong to pick on those types of people.

As she headed away from her ex friend Claudia she heard her say to the girl right next to her, “ I bet her parents wish the problem with her eyes spread to the rest of her body and killed her so they wouldn’t have to take care of such a waste of human space.” And that was it. That was the last straw. Claudia got what she wanted as a tear managed to squeeze its way out of her eye and down her cheek. Claudia and what she said appalled some of the other people in the crowd but they did not say anything.
Pepita went to the office and pretended to be sick so she could go home. Her mom came and picked her up soon after they hung up and tried to comfort her daughter. She gave her a hug and said just a few words, which usually helped but did not really this time. “māu anō e rapu he oranga ” The rest of the day Pepita stayed in her room till she felt over what was said. She remembered her mother’s words and knew that she was the only one who could let such things bother her. Claudia had no control over her emotions and she would not let some insignificant girl get her down.

The next day as school everything seemed normal. Maybe it was just the fact that it was Friday the 13th. All that mattered is that her mother was right and she wouldn't let another person affect her emotions without her consent ever again.

Dealing With Missing Brothers

Pepita sat in her room, like normal. The cotton sheets under her legs felt rather itchy against her bare skin. The bed sank in slightly with her weight on it and she had her hands gently clasped in her lap. Her good eye was staring up at the clock, watching the fuzzy image tick away time, slowly. Tick, tock, tick, tock, tick. It was times like these she wished she had some friends, some actual friends that would be able to make her life…..different.

A couple of months ago Pepita’s two older brothers, Demarco and Jayden, went away to college. They both were accepted in different colleges, able to focus on their studies and master their chosen major. Pepita was so happy for them, honestly she didn’t think about how she would be alone and without them. Instead, she helped them celebrate and even threw them a small party, full of balloons, streamers, and cake. It was a great going away party, one she took weeks to plan. The sad thing was they both left on the same day, going the same way. She watched her brothers board the train and wave goodbye. Jayden had given her a hug first, but they boarded and disappeared into the horizon as if they were never really there. Tears rolled down her cheeks, the warm water left wet trails as they made their way down. Her mother had noticed and pulled her close, reminding her that her brothers would be back for the major holidays and when they had multiple days off in a role. It would not be so bad and they would call every week or something. Pepita nodded and knew her mother was right. It was obviously just this moment and she would need till tomorrow at least to feel better and accept the change.

It was months later, three months, seventeen days, and forty-six minutes since she last saw her brothers. The only reason she kept track of that was because Pepita was so bored all the time. She tried sketching dresses, clothing, anything. She tried her hardest to create something she liked but it was not working. It was as if her brothers took her creativity with them. They gathered it in their goodbye hug and danced away with it on the train. All of her motivation was gone and she just sat, for hours, staring at a fuzzy image of a clock and listen to the ticking.

A voice from downstairs caught her attention and Pepita let a small sigh slip through her pinkish lips. It was her father’s voice; she could recognize the burley thick tone behind it. He always sounded so gruff and angry, but his eyes told his true emotions.

Pepita! Come down stairs, your mother and I would like to talk to you.” The voice paused for a moment but since Pepita did not move yet, he continued, “Right now young lady, this is important.

Coming!” Peptia called down to her father. She really did not want to go down there, it was not like she would automatically feel better once she made her way down the steps. Putting her hands firmly on the bed, she pushed herself forward until her feet met the wooden floor below. Standing up, she turned and saw the bent up pole that was her walking cane. Grabbing it, she unfolded the helping tool and slapped the rubber end down to the floor. It made a small thud and she heard her father clear his throat a bit after that, almost as if he wasted her to hurry. Walking from her room, she gripped the handrails on the stairs and carefully made her way down. Rounding the corner, she stopped in front of her parents and tilted her head up to see their blurry faces. “Yes father?” She questioned while trying to look innocent in case she actually did something.

Pepita,” Her father, Nolan, started, “It has come to our attention that-“ He was cut off by a gentle but swift elbow to the ribs by his wife. He let out a small gah and then looked down at her. Her smile was so gentle and she just smirked up to him that he rolled his eyes and started again. “It has come to your mother’s attention that you seem rather lonely or something.” He was not the most eloquent with words, but he did try.

It is just that you sit alone in your room most days. I do not even see you draw anymore. Is it your eyes, is there something going on with them again?” Her mother prodded. Obviously, she was just worried about the health of her daughter.

Pepita shook her head from side to side. “No. It is not my eyes mother. They are fine. I am fine. I just do not have anything to do. Since Demarco and Jayden, left I do not have any motivation or anything. I feel like I’m crippled all over again, but in a different way.” She sighed and looked down at the ground, letting her head hang.

Her father stepped closer and lifted her chin. It was hard for parents to see their children suffer and not be able to do anything. “What about if we got you a companion, a pet?” It was the best he could think of and it seemed to of worked. Pepita’s face lit up with the idea.

Can I really? Can I get what I want? Can I get anything I want?” Her voice was full of excitement. Nolan just nodded, he would do anything to make his daughter happy. She had been wanting a pet for a while but her parents never agreed to it. This moment was extraordinary and would be a great opportunity. The idea of getting what she wanted was perfect. Pepita knew exactly what she wanted.
