The golem trotted down the path they were working on, kissed Jordan's cheek, and returned to its spot to sit and sing to itself. Jordan looked after it for long moments, then turned back to his task. Why would it bother me? Ferros sounded genuinely confused. Neither of them paid much attention to the shadowlings on the paths below, too engrossed in the tangle of questions. The waves of dark broke against the barriers, ineffective against the carefully considered protection of wooden walls. I don't know. Jordan flattened his palm against the glass of the window. I'm still angry at Rep. Jordan repaired the barrier, nailing scraps of wood over the spots where the shadowlings had weakened the defenses. You should be. He didn't think of you. He should have. Ferros sounded unhappy, confused and tired and not quite resentful. I wish I could hear how he thought of it. Jordan rested a hand against the boards of the fortification. Jordan turned away from the window as the shadowlings overran the barriers and swarmed the golem, the golem that looked just like Harrison. Technically, he'd won. He'd held out for seven waves of defense on the course when three was the minimum to pass. He'd earned his win. He'd kept going and let the golem die. It was only a golem.
