It is greater than God and more evil than the devil. The poor have it, the rich need it and if you eat it you'll die. What is it?

Yeah it was kind of apparent in hindsight. I guess I'll post another riddle.

One day Bob decides to take a walk down the street. But on his walk he passes by a convenient store to which he witnesses a murder. So being the person that he was, he goes to the nearest phone booth and dials 911. Leading the police to the scene, the on duty officers examine the sight only to look back at Bob telling him to never call them again.
Now the thing was the officers did there job properly, but Bob wasn't lying. How is this possible?
