I love when Mark and Roger are having their little fight
It's so much more effective than in the NYTW, where Mark is the one admitting things about himself
It adds a new facet to both characters
Roger is surprisingly insightful, and Mark seems even more detached
Mark reminds me of myself more and more all the time

Mimi: He was the same way - he was always "run away - hit the road don't commit" you're full of s**t I love this part. Joanne: She's in denial Mimi: He's in denial Joanne: Didn'y give an inch when i gave a mile Mark: Come on Mimi: I gave a mile Roger: Gave a mile to who? Mark & Benny: Come on guys chill! Mimi & Joanne: I'd be happy to die for a taste of what Angel had someone to live for-unafraid to say i love you i wish I had a taste of what angel had too.

Easily my favorite song on Rent. I liked watching the Broadway performances of this... Shouldn't have been cut from the movie! sad

I saw the movie before hearing the entire OBCR and when I was flipping through the deleted scenes I was just so disappointed that 'Goodbye Love' was taken out. It really defined Mark's character and showed his character flaw. I think with the scene missing you don't get as much of a feeling for Mark's character. You get a little bit of it from 'What You Own', but it doesn't shout it straight to your face like 'Goodbye Love' did.

I actually knew NYTW before the other versions, because I didn't own them at the time. And I like NYTW because Roger and Mark switch the roles, and Mark is the one talking about his work, not Roger. It's nice seeing Mark make these confessions about himself.
I nearly cried the second time I watched the deleted scene for it. As soon as I saw Mimi and she started singing, "Goodbye love" I felt choked up. I think that whole scene is very touching, and sad.

Definatly one of my favorite songs. 3nodding
I was really angry that they took this one out. It was just so...good. Along with the ending they ended up picking. I liked the alternative ending much better.

`Ducky What was really sad is that I saw the movie, and about a month later, I heard the actaul song (the full version) for the first time, and I was talking to my friend about my ex (who i still absolutly love), and I heard the "just came to say goodbye love, goodbye love... glory, one blaze of glory." which was exactly what happend. I tried to say goodbye to him at the end of the summer camp thing, but he would have none of it. He said he would just dissapear without saying goodbye so that no one cried at goodbyes. So I heard that, and right when it felt 'natural' i was about to say to sing to myself to the same tune, "but hello..." i remeber that I was going to say something, but I cant remeber what. It was really creepy because Mimi sort of sang along with me "hello... disease" that scared the s**t out of me. I was sobbing by the end, because of the combination of the music reading my mind and everything else...
i know i sound pathetic and angst-teeny but thats the truth and my story behind the song. *blink* *blink* *...headache* I'm torn between GBL from the nYTW and the OBC/movie. They both have their merits (which is what I say about them, anyway.) I think I actually prefer Mark's confession, and Roger looking at him with almost admiration--"You're the one of us with the talent and the drive." And poor Marky, who's afraid the pressure's gonna make him crack. The first part of GBL from the demo has a lot more insight into Joanne, too.

Goodbye Love (specifically Mark and Roger's fight) is absolutely the saddest and one of the most important and climactic moments in the show for me. The fact that Columbus would even consider cutting it seems so weird to me...I dunno...Mark and Roger can both be interpreted as completely different characters without that moment. And really, I would say that the solution to an overload of emotion is not to mind the most emotional part of the whole movie and simply take it out. Grrr.

This is like my ABESOLUTE favorite song from RENT! I love this! I was listening to the commentary with Roger, Mark and Christopher and they said they cut it because it would be too weird from Mark and Roger to just start singing to each other when in almost every other scean, they just talk to each other, not sing. So, yeah, that's why they cut it. I'm really mad they did tho...its my fav!!

They also cut it because Columbus found when he watched it that by the time you got to Goodbye Love in the film, you were so full of emotion that such an emotional song just cut it all off and made you numb. So he said. So cut something else!

I think it's a beautiful song. It was cut for a reason, I really don't think it fit in even though it did explain a lot.

I love this song. It's so cool Jonathan Larson could string together three seprate, almost unrelated meetings into one song so they make sense. My favorite part is when Mark and Rodger are arguing in song. A friend and I can sing that part perfectly. We get all sweaty and truly angry. We also sing What You Own together and blow everyone away. I am so Mark.

They didn't put it into the movie because "it was too emotional". Whatever. I think this is the saddest song after I'll Cover You: Reprise.
