They seemed to settle into a rhythm, and Wash raised his free hand obediently, still wincing a little at the noise. His shielding seemed a bit more effortless now.
"Philadelphia, eh? Never been that far north." A pause, a blow. "Denise woulda liked it, she always liked the cold-" another pause, this time more awkward. "Uh, that is..." he trailed off into silence, and chose to focus on the monster. Why had he even brought her up? It had just felt so natural. Like nothing had changed.
But everything had changed.

"Oh, it's only cold in the winter, really... Who's Denise?" Jerry hesitated thoughtfully about these new found facts about his friend. From the south. Knew someone named Denise...

... and then he remembered they had a job to do.
When the ringing in his ears faded a bit to be replaced by the thick whispering, Jerry swallowed deeply, walking through the smoldering mist where the creature had once been into the dark hallway.

The last blast shot the creature straight through the heart, and they were alone again. Alone with whispers, and ghosts of the past.
"She's- she was, uh. Well," he reached in his pocket, fishing around a bit before he dragged out his wallet and flipped to a picture. It showed a smiling young woman holding an infant. She looked so happy. He hoped she'd found that spark again, without him.
"My wife," he whispered finally. He cleared his throat.

"Oh, I'm sorry," Jerry hesitated, letting the dim glow of Roar's eyes light their way. His voice was a bit more distant now, wobbling at the edges. You were doin' great, Roar urged, aching with his fear-full metaphorical belly. Where'd that fire go?"D-drowing in Fog-og-og," He whispered, clearing his throat before raising his voice again, "Did she er... p-pass on?" Wash chuckled dryly, lowering his arm. Sally glowed, reflecting eerily off the fog that rolled in around and past them. "No, sir. But I did."
And this was proving to be one hell of an afterlife.

"You did?" Jerry hesitated for just a moment before the creature launched itself at Wash's shield. He quickly fired, trying to knock the creature back.
"Oh- OH! Oh.. so... so she's ah... s-still... um. Then... why did you ah... why did you agree to be a hunter? If... I mean, if you had a... had someone? I mean... I didn't have anyone. And just a horrible apartment and a job I had been fired from."

Wash frowned, gathering his thoughts. He wasn't genrally a fairly intropsective or philosophical person. He went to church, he liked football, he liked his job. But he wanted to someone to understand. He hadn't run away. He hadn't given up, not yet.
"I didn't come here because I didn't have anything. I agreed to come here because, well...I had everything." Wash grunted, a blow deflecting off his shield. "Something to...Fight for, right?" He'd turned his head, and the little creature seized the opportunity to slide past him.

Wash glanced back at Jerry again, this time with a measure of concern. "That sounds...terrible. I'm sorry, man. Look, it's not as bad as it sounds, right? My family. They'll move on. This isn't like, like I got sent to war or something. I'm already dead. She's not gonna have to be up every night wonderin' what happened to me, if I got shot or somethin'. And you-"
"Well, you're not alone anymore, right man?"

Jerry wobbled as he pulled the trigger again, the whispers roaring in his head and in his ears.... His shot was sent off-kilter, and Roar gave a frustrated snarl in the back of his head as suddenly Jerry burst into tears, accompanied by a tight sob.

Jerry's latest shot barely grazed the creature, and Wash glanced to him. Oh, s**t. They were not in a good place for either of them to have a breakdown. Oh, God. And no one knew where they were. The whispers were louder, and the foyer of the schoolhouse seemed somehow darker...
Wash thrust forward with Sally, but stumbled and missed. The fog drifted a little, obscuring her light in an uncertain haze.
"Watch out, man, I lost sight of it!"

Jerry fired again with another sob, "Y-you... you had.... had a f-f-family, though! A... a f-f-future! Woo-woo-why... how could..." The creature erupted in a squeak and a spray of black smoke, and still babbling about his opinion of Wash's situation, he wobbled forward, deeper into the school.

"Hey!" Wash exclaimed. How could he? He could barely hear Jerry over the whispers but...it felt so accusatory. Had he abandoned his family after all? Had he made the wrong call? He caught sight of the other man making his way further into the shadowy depths of the building. Into the whispering and the fog. Wash followed him.
"I didn't have a choice," he hissed. "Alright? There was...An incident. Something terrible happened, and I was the only one to see it, only no one would believe me, right?" The boy's shoes, sitting on the landing, just before the attic ladder. The whispers in the shadows... Shadows that were opaque, almost. Wash was certain he'd never forget that day. He chucked darkly, and it sounded alien. This wasn't like him, and he felt odd, distantly, but the constant whispers and sounds almost-heard egged him on. "No one believes in monsters. And no one believes in people, either. It was this, or jail. I chose death over being disowned." He spat that last out distastefully. He wanted to pretend he was being noble, that this had been a choice, for the greater good. But God he'd been scared, that night in the prison. He'd never been so scared in his life. The whispers numbed him even as they drew out the certainty that he'd made the wrong call.
Coward. That's what he'd been. He couldn't deny it. He HAD had everything, hadn't he? And maybe what had happened with the boy was just a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but he could have at least stayed to see it all play out. After all, it wasn't like he'd had a criminal history. Surely they'd have eventually seen his side. Instead, he'd run away. And he was still running.
He bowed his head, suddenly exhausted.
