"I bet if you talk to Life division you could get a replacement," Jordan suggested. "If you want to, anyway." He quietly offered his scarf in lieu of a tissue.

His eyebrows arched at the admission that she'd noticed; not that it was that hard to see, not if you were paying attention, but he hadn't quite expected Ofie to catch it. "I do like him," he answered. "That's part of why I'd like to help smooth things over, if I can." He hugged Ofie gently. "You're a friend, and I don't want you to get hurt, physically or otherwise. I don't want to sound like I'm scolding you, either. You know?"

"Ya dun sound like yer scoldin' but ya kinda are makin' me feel useless. Ah jus' wish Ah could be helpful ta people rather than jus' sommin' they unite in a cause ta hate." Ofelia didn't take Jordan's scarf, she had some pride (and also didn't want to ruin it) but she waved it off with a small motion of thanks and instead used her own brown one. Brown was a good color, she liked it, because it could get dirty and no one would know or care. Red was good for blood only, or so she surmised. When she was done wiping her face she balked at the hug, surprised that someone else was actually starting a hug and it wasn't her.

The shock of being hugged, of someone calling her a friend, made her cry even more. All this stupid stuff, this whole adventure, when was the last time she properly slept? How come she kept having those nightmares even though she was okay and the voices had stopped? A hiccup escaped her lips as she buried her face against Jordan's torso, one of her hands moving so that her fingers were pressed against his chest; they moved a bit to crunch his fabric. "Ah'm so sorry Ah can jus' be someone awesome fer all'a y'all. Ah jus' wanted everyone ta be mah friend an' all go on adventures tagether but. . . . but Ah jus' keep steppin' on it."

"Well, I know you're not useless. You're a Sun," Jordan said lightly, and held Ofelia gently while she cried on his shirt. "And you're stubborn enough to stick it out. None of us are perfect," he said more seriously. "Everyone's got things that hurt them, things they're not proud of, things they wish they could do better. Hunters - well, we've been told we're the crazy ones all our lives, that can do weird things to your head."

I object to being called weird.

No, you're just my personal crazy. Jordan exchanged a quiet brush of affection with Ferros, then went on, "It's a huge adjustment when you've only been awake a few months, and now we've all been stuck in too small a space with no privacy after the biggest mission any of us might ever go on. Things will get better again once we've all got some space to breathe and wind down, I think."

"Bein' reminded that Ah'm a Sun ain't helpin' much, sorry big brother. errr. . . " Okay well, Ofelia had been calling Jordan 'big brother' in her head for a while now and she assumed that, due to her just being a big ball of wallowing self-pity, it slipped out. ". . .sorry. Ah. . .didn' really mean ta call ya that, Ah know it's probably not good'a me ta do so." She kept her face buried against his chest, not just because she was still crying because oh god she was mortified.

All this wallowing in self pity was starting to piss Rue off. It was pissing her off so hard because for the time being she'd been silent but now that Ofelia was making more noise and just being generally annoying, her voice started back up inside her partner's head. Loser, inbred, retarded hick~ Can't do anything, useless for anything~ Ready to die, be killed by your own, useless, inbred, retarded hick~

Rue's song really sucked and it stung Ofelia's nerves. Her shoulders shook as the song repeated itself again and again, the boo hag's voice like scratching on chalkboard with nails. "Ah wish Ah didn' have Rue in mah head. Ah wish Ah was back home, wit' mah brother an' crazy aunt."

She didn't really want to go home, but at the moment anything would have been better than this headache and the tears.

"It's okay," Jordan said quietly. "Does it help you cope? I miss my family too."

He didn't say anything to her outburst, just keeping his arm around her shoulders and letting her calm down on her own time.

"Ah dunno if it's ta help me cope or jus' me forcin' mah feelin's an' hopes onta someone else. Ah used ta do it lots as a kid, or so mah brother said. Ah'd make up entire families, entire games, jus' no one could see 'em. this was back b'for Ah lost mah eye, so Ah'm wonderin' if the people, the things Ah always saw, weren' really human or of this world. Makes sense, inna way." The games made more sense to her now anyway, what with the running and having younger siblings and a mom and dad that weren't really her mom and dad. The pranks she pulled, the lighting of the first fire, all because her 'parents' had told her to do so and she'd wanted to obey.

Listening to the false family had cost her the real one, and hearing all the voices had cost her the rest of her life. Now she was trapped here, with people who wanted to kill her, and a person holding her who didn't really understand just why she was so confused and upset.

Ofelia herself didn't really know why she was so confused and upset. Rue's continued song in her head was doing nothing for the teen except making the situation worse.

"Am'm so sorry still, that Ah jus' am bein' so useless ta ya like this. Mah tears ain' helpin' no one, but Ah jus'. . . .it's kinda funny, Ah dun really 'member the last time Ah cried." Her fingers were still laced into Jordan's shirt though her grip was weakening. "Tell me 'bout yer home?"

"It makes things harder when nobody believes you," Jordan said. "I was lucky. My brother saw them too, so I had some kind of idea that maybe I wasn't totally crazy."

He smiled a little at her, a worried kind of smile. "They're helping you," he pointed out. "Everyone's got to let some of that pressure out once in a while. It's kind of like having a cavity. If you ignore it, it'll just sit there and eat away at the tooth and hurt worse, but if you get it drilled, it'll hurt for a little while and then feel better."

"Home, huh," he said thoughtfully. "Well, before I came here, I was at college, but since my Tia - uh, that's aunt in Spanish, if you didn't know - since my Tia lived in the same town and Andy and I lived with her and our cousins, I was back every weekend. By the time I was in college, our oldest cousin, that was Jessica, she'd graduated, but she was right down the block; Amy and Katie were still at home, and they always complained when I came back for the weekend because someone had to share their bedroom, but that was joke-complaining because I shared with Andy." He smiled wistfully, eyes unfocused, looking off into his memories. "Kid would've been off to college himself this year. He was gonna go to art school. Working on his portfolio and everything." He sighed. "Anyway, when I got back, the dogs would always bark at me nonstop for five minutes and then suddenly remember that they knew who I was and then they'd be stuck to me like stupid little fuzzy burrs the whole rest of the visit. I don't know why they liked me so much. They were Tia Rosa's babies, it wasn't like I fed them or anything, but they loved me. I kind of miss the little fuzzballs."

He leaned his head against the side of the bunk. "Man, I bet Amy got my car. That thing's a piece of junk, I hope it's not costing her too much in repairs. She better not be driving that old clunker up to San Francisco, it eats gas like no tomorrow. It's cheaper to take the bus."

Ofelia closed her eyes as she listened to Jordan talk, her head against his shoulder. She could hear his heart beating and she could feel the vibrations from his chest as he spoke. It was calming for her nerves, she could focus only on those sounds and ignore all others, and for the first time in the whole conversation her tears actually stopped. Her face was red and tear stained, her nose was practically making her a Rudolph, but she didn't really care. She was listening to his words and his breathing, his heart beat and his stories.

"It sounds really nice." There had been some silence after Jordan finished his story, Ofelia barely whispering out her compliment. It was strange, she could picture everything that he was saying, and she looked to her own memories for her brother and her aunt. "Yanno, Ah. . . dun even remember mah brother's name. Ah never called him by it, nor did Ah ever call mah Auntie by her name." A bitter chuckle escaped her lips. "Some family Ah had, huh."

The grip on Jordan's shirt was all but relaxed now, though Ofelia wasn't moving from resting on his shoulder. she felt so. . . tired.

"Family's important to me," Jordan said quietly. "I hope Tia Rosa and my cousins didn't grieve too long. It's better than if they thought I had just left, though." He fell silent, absently stroking Ofelia's hair.

Finally, he said, "I've made my own family here, in a way. I need people." He laughed a little, sadly. "I always thought I was pretty independent. Self-reliant. I was wrong. Maybe that's okay." He looked down at Ofie, seeing her and his cousins and his brother all at once in a kind of overlap, the instinct to protect and comfort recognized at last for what it was. "It's okay. You look tired, Ofie." He hugged her gently.

The truth of the matter was that Ofelia was tired, and Jordan's heartbeat coupled with his gentle hugs and patting of her head was slowly lulling the teen to sleep. Her breathing became slower, more rhythmic, and she found it hard to keep her eyes open. Just how long ago had it been since she'd gotten some decent sleep? Since before coming to the underground bunker, that was to be certain, and her eyes closed as she took a deep breath. "'m sleepy, yeah. . . ." Her words trailed off as her head nodded, trying to keep herself awake yet at the same time surrendering herself to sleep.

All that crying had really worn her down, and before she could stop herself she was asleep in Jordan's arms. Perhaps now she would have a decent dream, if only.

Ofie had fallen asleep on him. Jordan debated with himself, then carefully, gently shifted around so he could pick the sleeping girl up and lay her down on the empty bunk they'd been sitting against. He settled a blanket over her and tucked it around her shoulders, then leaned against the bunk, watching her for a few moments. She was broken in some ways, and she didn't even realize it; Jordan wasn't sure if he should pity her, or if he did.

He did know that he didn't want her to get hurt. Maybe she'd learn over time. It wasn't anything he could do much about; figuring people out was something you had to do for yourself, if you were going to. He sighed, and said softly, "Be careful, okay?"

He looked back just once before he left the barracks.
