(( Okey-dokey, smokey. And yeah, Heart Stamp is a weird move, and Nolan wouldn't know better. Even weirder considering that Woobat and Swoobat are special attackers. Giving them a physical move? Pshaw. And fine, I'll roll for paralyze then, bwah ah ahahaaa! )) Spark inflicts damage and has a 30% chance of paralyzing the target. (1-30 is inflicted with paralysis.) The accumulated damage on Valor was starting to show. Even the relatively moderate Heart Stamp smack Woobat could do caused the Luxio to stumble. His flowing gait was interrupted. The Spark cat had to put on the brakes before he fell and hurt himself. That had to be enough. Nolan didn't think Luxio could take any more hits like that without being seriously injured. So much for a clean sweep with just Valor, but Nolan hadn't even thought he would get this far at all. "Valor, show me all that training with Twill paid off. Attack that bat thing with your electricity now!" Yeah, the damage was showing. Valor winced when he started dashing for the Woobat but he was determined to live up to Nolan's expectations. This Luxio was devoted to his trainer already. With the Charge, now the voltage of Spark had temporarily doubled, soaring to a 130 powered move with Luxio's electric nature further boosting it. A bit slower, a bit less agile now as the fatigue was setting in, Valor did have one last trump card. Still some distance away, the Spark cat coiled for a fantastic leap, yellow eyes dead set on the flying target. The hours of practice aided in Valor's jump, rocketing straight for the Woobat up in the air. Both forepaws extended, claws curved wickedly, Valor attempted to catch, electrocute, and bring down the bat with him on landing. The Woobat screeched in pain as the Luxio came down on top of it, transferring its charged current into the tiny bat. As the pair of combatants hit the ground, the Gym Leader frowned and recalled the Flying-type - there was no hope that it had survived such an attack. Still, it had done its job. "Thanks, little friend," he murmured briefly to its Pokeball before returning his attention to the battle at hand.
Despite being down by two Pokemon, the leader wasn't totally out. The Luxio was clearly hurting by this point and would be facing his strongest team member, who should have no problem putting it away. The kid's other Pokemon were unknowns, but unless he had another Electric-type on him the Leader was assured of at least putting up a better fight. Without further ado, the man tossed his final Pokeball out into the arena with a cry of "Go Pidgeotto!" As the bird materialized from its spherical container, the leader lost no time with issuing instructions. "Open with Quick Attack!" The falcon shot forwards as fast as it could, bulldozing into the Luxio.

A Pidgeotto. Awesome, another Kanto native Nolan was familiar with. But he didn't want to put his Luxio through any more, not when he had other pokemon who were uninjured. He was reaching for Valor's pokeball when he heard the temp leader give the order for a Quick Attack. 'Oh no ...' By the time he had recalled Valor, the Spark cat was on his side, and hadn't yet begun the struggle to see if he could stand again. That would have been pushing it too far when they already had some leeway. Well, and if this next tactic worked once, no reason not to use it again. Fumbling again to get the right pokeball out of his bag, Nolan made a promise to himself to by a belt or some kind of carrier. Hippopotas was next up, and the Snivy on the sidelines looked smug with herself. "Hippopotas, use Yawn." The brown and tan female took a moment to look around casually, and then looked over at the flying bird thing. The Hippo kneeled down with her front legs, and then the back legs, and lounged on the field. But yawning widely at the Pidgeotto wasn't something that required her to be standing for, and knowing birds, she just wanted to hunker down while they blew air all over the place. After the yawn, with a whistle of wind, Hippopotas exhaled, and the port on her back whipped up a Sandstorm by ways of her ability, Sand Stream. The Leader cursed. Yawn was an annoyance under regular circumstances - with only one Pokemon left, it was almost sure to end the battle right then and there. Worse still, Sand Stream was going to nullify his Pidgeotto's already lackluster defense. At this point, his only real hope was that the kid's third Pokemon was something his Pidgeotto could dispatch easily. "Whirlwind Pidgeotto!" the man commanded, shouting to be heard over the rush of sand. The bird responded dutifully, flapping its wings swiftly to generate an intense cyclone that whisked the Hippopotas out of the arena. Now to wait and see.

The second time he's been afraid for his life since he started his pokemon journey? Was when Hippopotas was lifted off the floor of the gym by the Whirlwind and tossed in his general direction. So Nolan was a little strung-out, over reacted, and dropped to the floor in hopes the flying Hippo didn't take him out. What an inglorious way to die. Nincada was the one to replace Hippopotas, confused as his trainer, and Nolan was so preoccupied with trying to figure out where his Ground type pokemon had gone, he didn't notice his Bug/Ground type pokemon was out on the field. Snivy would just give the orders instead. From the sidelines she shouted to the Trainee pokemon, pointing towards the Pidgeotto for emphasis, "Niv ivy sivvv! Nivvy niv!" The Nincada skittered sideways to get a fix on the opposing pokemon. Unfortunately Nincada's eyesight was extremely poor and with the bird up in the air, he had to rely just on his antennae instead of vibrations. Funny thing was, he had raised accuracy with Compound Eyes. Snivy told him what was going on, and instead of making an offensive move, he used Harden. Increasing his defenses maybe increased his chances he wasn't going to be knocked out with a single move, and if what the Grass Snake said was true, it was only a matter of time before Pidgeotto fell asleep. A few seconds after the hippo went whirling out of the arena, the leader's Pidgeotto slowly drifted towards the floor, fighting off sleep but failing miserably. The Yawn did its job and sent the bird off to dreamland, despite the stinging sand swirling about it. "Pidgeotto, wake up!" the Gym Leader yelled at his Pokemon, hoping that his voice would shake it out of its stupor. The Nincaida was vulnerable to the Flying-type, regardless of its defensive hardening, and with the other trainer lying on the floor he had split seconds to take advantage of the opportunity. If the bird could wake up sometime soon...
((Rolling for sleep. Gen V rules say that you're asleep for 1-3 turns, so rolling to see if it wakes up next turn. A 1-33 is a successful awakening - a 1-66 on the second turn wakes it up, and after the third turn it will automatically wake up. Make sense?))

Rolled for number of hits here. )) Nolan would just have to figure out later where Hippopotas went, and even to help quell his worries, he heard the Hippo calling out. Nolan glanced at Snivy for a translation, and she still looked cool, calm, and collected. Without wasting a second, Snivy pointed back towards the match to get Nolan to pay attention to what really did matter right now. Hippopotas was fine and she was already charging her way back to her trainer. But that still left Nincada and a sleeping Pidgeotto. "Um ..." Nolan hesitated, ticking the Grass Snake off. "Nivvy niv!" Nincada got out of his defensive stance, and glanced over at Nolan and Snivy. He didn't like taking orders from the Grass Snake. She had already made it clear she didn't think highly of the bug. So Nincada waited for Nolan, despite the urgency of the situation, yet that was how much faith the Trainee pokemon wanted to show in his trainer. "Uh, Scratch attack!" Nincada nodded and seemed to smile. He could do one better than just Scratch. Running at the sleeping bird pokemon, Nincada wasted no time starting into a Fury Swipes, four would be the magic number until he got too nervous to land number five. It was a large bird after all. Despite the furious pummeling it received from the insect, the punishment it received from the sandstorm, and the leader's yells, the Pidgeotto stayed fast asleep. The leader's face was grim. He didn't have any other option than to get his Pidgeotto to wake up. "Come on Pidgeotto! Get up!" he yelled, redoubling his efforts.

(( Rolled again for number of hits here. )) Sure enough, Hippopotas meandered her way over to Nolan, and plopped down on the sidelines near Snivy. And despite the dramatic scene unfolding on the field, she lounged in a small pile of sand, that she soon made bigger with her own power. Nolan only gave Hippopotas a sideways glance, his mindset grim. That Yawn effect was scaring him, but if the temp leader was in his place, he'd keep attacking for the win, right? Did Pidgeotto's trainer even have the option to forfeit? "Keep at it, Nincada! It's still asleep." The reassurance was enough, because the Trainee pokemon couldn't tell very well if the bird was awake yet or not. And with Nolan's urging, Nincada came in for another round of Fury Swipes, one after another, getting in another four hits. Luck was still with them. Nolan just hoped this battle would be over soon. Finally, after a second round of Fury Swipes, the Pidgeotto finally jolted awake. The leader took a certain grim satisfaction in that - the battle was already over, but at least he didn't go out while asleep. "Pidgeotto, use Gust!" the leader ordered assumed that it would be enough to dispatch both the insect and momentarily clear the sandstorm. The bird chirped an affirmative, whipping the air with its wings again to create a small windstorm around the Nincada.

Nincada was hit hard, blown back by the gust, and flipped over onto his back with legs flailing in the air. This time Nolan was quicker in recalling his pokemon back into his pokeball, the enveloping red light pulling Nincada back in. The bug maybe had some fight left in him, yet Nolan didn't see the point in making his Nincada suffer another attack like that - Pidgeotto had the clear advantage while the bird was up in the air. Nincada was as good as knocked out. "Hippopotas, it's your turn again ..." Nolan sighed inwardly. He didn't like to see his pokemon getting hurt, and that whirlwind really ticked him off. He was assured in his victory, because he knew how tough the Hippo was, but it had been unfortunate that Nincada had to be involved. "Use your Yawn again, please." Once Hippopotas was back in the ring, she got herself comfortable in all the sand that had been piling up over time. Situated, she gave another gaping Yawn to put the bird right back to sleep in a little while. The leader frowned as the Hippopotas let loose another yawn. He weighed his options briefly, but there was only one real conclusion he could come to - the battle was over. His Pidgeotto could inflict more damage before falling asleep, but it didn't have much time after that and likely wouldn't be able to dispatch the hippo either. There was no point in causing any more harm to either of their Pokemon if the match was already decided, and as such the leader's next move was obvious. He raised the Pidgeotto's Pokeball, recalling the bird.
"Congratulations, trainer. You've won your Gym Challenge," the leader called out as he walked across the arena. "You showed a good sense of tactics and a willingness to train your Pokemon until they were ready for the battle. Excellent job. Without a doubt, you deserve this." He held out his hand, a shiny Aero Badge resting in his palm. "This belongs to you now. Additionally, allow me to gift you with this." He reached into a pocket and withdrew a small, silvery-blue disk. "This TM holds the move Acrobatics. I'm sure a skilled trainer like yourself will be able to make use of it."

A little slow on the uptake, Nolan was immediately set into a panic when the temp leader withdrew Pidgeotto. He tensed up, waiting for a fourth surprise pokemon to take the field after the bird. Wasn't that against the rules? Did Nolan break a rule somehow? To the trainer's surprise, instead the leader told him he had won, and walked all the way across to deposit the badge in Nolan's hand. Stunned. he at first said nothing when he was also given the TM. Snivy cheered and snapped her trainer out of his daze when she ran over. Her normally cool and calm demeanor was abandoned for the moment, and she jumped on Nolan with a flying hug, skittered up his back, and further weirded him out with the sudden affection. Snivy wrapped her short little arms around his face, and nuzzled against his cheek, displacing his glasses. She was so happy, so happy she could just ... just ... "Th-thanks. Thank you, sir, for the badge. Your pokemon are really tough, I didn't think I would win for awhile there." Dazzled still by the burst of light and the release of energy, Nolan wasn't really sure what to make out of his new Servine. Snivy ... that is, his Servine, she hadn't even battled, or had she been waiting just for him to win before she evolved? Nolan's second thought was about Valor. He needed to get his Luxio and Nincada healed. Servine draped her longer body over Nolan's shoulders and gazed smugly at the gym leader, pleased with herself and her silly human. "I better go heal my pokemon ... thank you. Again." Before he made a bigger fool of himself, Nolan quickly slipped out towards the exit. Hippopotas wondered if he was going to make a habit of leaving his pokemon behind thoughtlessly, and she trundled along behind him. Finally the Sandstorm died down.
