"Then you'd be sliding down on being able to control yourself," Jordan pointed out. "I'm trying to find a song that you can use as a focus. Kind of like - uh. Like how the act of drinking can be nearly as relaxing as the drink. Something good you can think of when things are starting to get out of control, so you can knock yourself out of the spiral down. It gives you a few moments to get yourself back and react the way you want to, instead of letting things outside you control you."

He smiled faintly. "It's what I do. Not with a song, but music is good for you. If you can get Roar to help, it'd be good too." He eyed the cord of the pennywhistle that hung from Jerry's neck. "Roar, I don't know how much good asking you will be, but I bet you don't particularly want Jerry to have a breakdown either. Wouldn't be good for either of you. So if you can give him a nudge to notify him when he's headed for negative association loops, it might help."

I don't think Roar is nice like I am, Ferros said dryly.

Can't hurt to ask.

"My Jerry Song," Jerry mumbled, shifting but at least seemed to be returning to his normal self a bit. Stressed and in need of some care, but generally speaking.

I'm not singing to you, Roar grumbled.

"W-well... well there um... is one song but... but it's kind of silly." He mumbled, hands instinctively pulling out the first few notes of the melody with a quiet pluck. His hand moved to silent the strings immediately.

I'm definitely not singing you *that*.

"No one's telling you to," He whispered heatedly, giving the whistle a flick if only to let Jordan know it hadn't been directed at him.

I'm not the one who's broken, dude.

"Yeah, pretty much," Jordan agreed. "Something you know so well you can think of it instantly and feel what it's like to play it and hear it, and that'll give you a point to focus on long enough to pull yourself together. Advanced version of the basic technique of I don't want to think about that so I'm gonna think about something else." He paused consideringly. "Kind of comes from the same place as dissociation, but dissociation sends you away, and this kind of thing helps you pull yourself back together."

The notes sounded familiar. It took a moment to place the melody, but then Jordan grinned, the irony of the choice striking him immediately. "We're really not in Kansas anymore, Toto."

He hesitated, then asked, "What'd he say? I mean, if I can ask." It felt strange to be asking about someone's conversations with their weapon, too personal, like prying into something that should be private.

At the joke, Jerry snorted, laughing far too loud... but it was as though the built of tension that needed some form of release had found a harmless outlet. He quieted himself down quickly. "I used to sing it with my Gram," He smiled down at the instrument, "But... but you're right. You're right." He fidgeted for the remainder of the talk until he realized he had been asked a question, "Oh, Roar? He ah... said He wasn't going to sing for me, ahahaaha. I'm not sure howling would really lift my spirits in any case."

Jordan nodded. "As long as it's something you can easily bring to mind and focus on so you're not getting overwhelmed by whatever's trying to freak you out. That's really all it is. It'll probably take some practice, but you'll get better at it."

Practice - a flashing parade of fragmentary memories, of waiting and worrying and making himself sick with it until he'd learned how not to, too young to have to be able to keep it all at arm's length. He pushed the memories away with practiced ease. Ferros rumbled softly and shifted in Jordan's mind, further blocking the years-old hurt.

He laughed a little. "Yeah, I wasn't asking him to sing. Just to poke you when he notices your mind is headed for the downhill path."

"I think if Roar and I had met in highschool," Jerry murmured distantly, but at least he was sounding himself again. "It would have involved him holding my head in the toilet, ahahaha."

He was feeling better, at least, the seizing pain of the panic attack having passed. He was just being silly. It was in his head.

That's what I keep trying to tell you, Roar started, but his voice was drowned out again by the whispers.

Jerry sagged, quietly picking away at the notes, "It's amazing what music can do for the cognitive mind," He shifted frets, "At the end... it was the familiar songs Gram remembered best. That and... and my own therapy is why I studied it so extensively. It's just... just hard to remember sometimes."

"The neverending dilemma of the nerds," Jordan agreed sympathetically. He'd used the school switch between middle school and high school to figure out how to get himself out of the nerd category, at least on a social presentation level. It had taught him a lot about how to blend in.

"I bet if you use music consciously as a stabilizing influence you'll be able to get more control over your phobias and nerves," he said. "You've already gotten on a much more even level over the course of the conversation we're having. You're thinking about things much more objectively, and I notice the stutter is gone again."

Jerry flushed, "I'll.. keep it in mind," He breathed out slowly, and winced at the mention of the stutter, "It used to be really bad," He said softly, "I guess with all the stress..." He shook his head, "Jordan? Um. Thank you. I.. I've been feeling pretty... out of sorts lately. Obviously. Um. But... having a friend really helps. "

"It really sucks being stuck down here," Jordan grumbled, his eyes sliding away briefly. "Things will get better once everyone's got some space again."

He smiled at the thanks. "Anytime, man. You're my friend. I worry when you're stressed out so hard." He whacked Jerry's shoulder lightly. "I'm still going to make you go to the infirmary, though. Don't want your leg giving out on you when you go up to clear out fog monsters."

"I.. I w-was alright earlier," He smiled weakly, wobbling with the playful blow. His head lolled, "I... I sh-should... go find Sasha." He swallowed, "I hope she'll be happy about me... going in her room without her permission but... but I thought... I mean, I know how I've been feeling and just... just having the option there, you know?" He patted the back of his guitar with a dim little tap.

"I'm sure she'll be happy," Jordan said, his smile softening. "It's good of you to think of her."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:12 pm

"It's... it's not what you think," Jerry began nervously picking away at his guitar strings again, pretending to concentrate on the music that drifted out of them. It really was soothing... he wasn't sure why he hadn't just... he HAD the guitar but... and no one was yelling at him just yet... ride it out, drink it in while he could, play softly. "She's... she's just been so nice to me and... and I just want to make sure she's okay, I mean it's n-notareboundoranything I'm... I'm n-not..."

"Hey, I didn't say anything about what it was or wasn't." Jordan grinned. "I mean, for all I know maybe she's like your sister or something."
PostPosted: Sat Apr 28, 2012 10:18 pm

"Y-yeah... like... like a s-sister..." His strumming slowed a moment, that pained look of anxiety returning to his face.

You don't do what you did about Sasha about your sister.

He left it at that.

"But... she's... she's the same about her flute as... as I am about anything musical. If I had a keyboard it would be the same, I'm just lucky a guitar is portable. M-maybe I could find a ukulele to bring on longer missions... You know.. to... to keep me grounded better?"

"Portable is good," Jordan said, leaving the touchier subject alone. It was still too close to the awkwardness that had been mostly absent in this conversation. "Maybe once we can actually take leave again you can get one."
