This wasn't going to work.
He could feel it in his bones before he even started -- this was going to end badly for him.
Sighing, he made his way over to the cages and grabbed a bird. The mouse was a little bit too close to home for him, and if something went horrifically wrong, he didn't want a dead mouse to show for it.
He gave his poison to the bird, who....darkened, slightly? Maybe?
Glancing around, he hesitated a moment before giving it the antidote.
And it did.....nothing.
Sighing glumly, he went to go give the bird back. Yeah...this whole famine thing? Really not his best subject. But at least now maybe he could go back and sleep.

Okay, feeding time. While rats would be his normal pet of choice, Mort felt that it would be a slight against his new companion and instead went for fish - it wasn't like the things could jump out and attack him like a bird could . . . right?
With a little wince he fed the fish poison first, observing very little change over the course of ten seconds. Er . . . He didn't normally wish for something bad to happen to something else, but in this case he'd hoped for at least a little discoloration. Concerned, he passed the antidote on anyway, noting that the fish seemed to be a little better for it, though there was hardly anything wrong in the first place. Ah well, it could've been worse, right?
Like Taryn falling on the floor moaning worse. With a start Mort headed to her side, brows knitting as he heard her explanation. Not the damn plants again . . . "Mrrrr. Need rest bit. Will bring to dorm." And there was no room for argument from her as he plucked her from the ground and nodded to Rafe, struggling a bit to keep her in a safe grip without accidentally grabbing something he shouldn't before heading out.
Jack, he hoped Rafe could make it. Zombies were strong, but not mighty.
(( Poison (0) < Antidote (+1)) = small success! ))

Did Rafe feel the tiniest smidge of jealousy and annoyance at himself that he hadn't done that first? Was he ever-so-slightly bothered that he hadn't taken Taryn back to the dorms immediately instead of letting her come to class? Maybe a tiny bit. But then again, he wasn't thinking too clearly himself, and she probably wouldn't have let him stop her from coming.
Still...something kind of stung about all of this.
Maybe he was just cranky because he was tired.
Exhaustedly, feeling like his extremities had turned to lead, he trailed after the others and left.

Taryn leaned against Mort greedily and allowed him to lead her back. She... she should definitely be taking more classes! Not hanging out in the dorms, not... oh Jack, her head.
Alright, maybe just this one time.
