He'd said too much. He'd said it wrong. She was staring at him, unmoving, unspeaking; suspended in time, Hayes found himself searching her face for a clue, for any possible sign to prepare him for what she was going to-

"Ow!"

The blond stumbled back, caught completely off-guard, and stared at Faleen's blurry image through his fingers. A strung-out moment of frantic thought came up with only one explanation for what had just happened, but his judgment was biased and it.. seemed so impossible.

And yet.

Slowly, as if the slightest wrong movement would send her running away, he laid a hand on her hunched shoulders.

"..Faleen?"

He could barely hear himself over his heart.

Yeah, she could just about die, she never felt this embarrassed before.

A hand was placed on her shoulder, and she heard her name, she straightened up quickly, holding out the glasses to him.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry I don't know what I-" She babbled frantically glad that her hair seemed to be hiding at least part of her face. "I'm so sorry."

Hayes was looking at her with a soft, slightly squinted expression.

Still with the same careful movements he drew the hair out of her eyes, ducked his head, and brought his lips to hers. As he tucked the strands behind her ear, his fingers trailed along her jaw in a light caress.

When he raised his eyes, he could see her in focus.

He didn't take the glasses, as she expected him to, instead, she felt his hand on the side of her face, brushing the hair out of her eyes and clearing up her vision.
She stopped talking, large hazel eyes glancing from his head, then back up to him.

He leaned toward her, she felt his hair brush over her forehead, he was so close to her.
Faleen let out a tiny, breathless gasp before she felt him close the distance and kiss her.

She remained completely frozen where she stood, hand closing around his glasses. It was clear she didn't know what to do, but the gentle touch of his hand along her jaw, and the warmth of the moment drew her in like she never expected it to.

He felt her stillness, her breath, the brief flutter of lashes when he broke away. Hayes let his forehead rest against hers and smoothed the curve of her cheek while his voice dropped to a whisper.

"I'm scared too."

It was hard to describe what she was feeling, it was powerful though, and took up the use and feeling of most of her body, especially her extremities.
It was overwhelming, and a little uncomfortable.
... She quite enjoyed it.

His lips left hers, and she took a couple of heavier gasps to try and lever out the fluttering in her stomach. before she felt his forehead on hers, his continuing gentle tough, and his soft words.

Her eyes closed, tilting her head a little against his and swallowed.
she had never understood what people went when they said that they melted inside, but she did not.

"I think I'm okay with being scared..." she said after a moment of just enjoying what this whole new feeling was.

A quiet laugh escaped him, making their noses brush. He couldn't, he found, keep his hands still; they wanted to run through her hair, sweep the curve of her shoulders, trace the planes of her face. With a silent note of caution he let them settle where they would, which turned out to be her waist, where they fit just above the swell of her hips.

"Guess we can be scared together then." He was smiling.

At his laugh she opened her eyes again, unable to keep her own smile from crossing her lips. At the much more light-hearted expression, a feeling of giddiness joined it- kind of like how she felt when a new robot or project that really excited her, only it was different this time.

She felt his hands again, this time on her hips. It surprised her a little bit, since she was to rarely touched by people, let alone by Hayes himself.
It sent a nervous wave from her waist and through her chest, but she didn't pull away.

Faleen nodded against him, reaching the hand up that wasn't holding his glasses and sliding it over his shoulder gently.
"alright." she agreed, with a wider smile to join his.

In answer he drew her close, unable to stop smiling as he kissed her a second time. A little thought said he really should put his glasses on - where were they, anyway? - but it wasn't a big deal. He could see the only thing that mattered right now with all the detail and vibrancy he needed, and that she was here, staying here, arm around him and looking at him like that made him laugh and pull her into a hug, which ended with an unfortunate metallic noise.

"Ow."

So there were his glasses.

She flustered even more when he kissed her again, not minding at all, even though it was an extremely new experience. She tried to return the gesture without seeming like she was completely incompetent at something as simple as kissing a man.
It seemed easier the second time though.

another embrace what stopped when the glasses she was holding onto got in the way.
Faleen blinked, and looked down at them. "Oh, goodness here." she said, moving back so that she could hold them up to him "You should put them back on."
She glanced away a little embarrassed "I didn't mean to knock those off, I didn't know I was so clumsy."

To feel her respond was elating, euphoric. He could have stayed here all day. Night. Whatever time it was.

"I guess," he laughed, sounding like he didn't mind their absence at all. He could feel himself grinning like an idiot; he didn't mind that either. In fact, Lucere could probably come down and yell at him right now and it wouldn't bother him. He took the frames from her though, slid them onto his face, found her hands again. Were they still blocking the elevator?

"Maybe you just need some practice."

She watched him while he smiled, taking his glasses and putting them back on.
her eyebrows arched a little as she thought to herself.
There was a tired weight still hanging over her heart, she knew it was from the lack of sleep and the constant stress of the past week, thought right now it seemed like such a distant ordeal.
Not with this new joy that seemed to take its place, a completely different and new experience.

She would be lying if she said this didn't worry her a little, letting someone close again, especially letting someone this close.
but... seeing the look on Hayes' face, a smile, so warm and honestly loving, she thought that maybe... maybe just this once, she can make an exception.
Just for him.

His hands found hers again, and she glanced down at them, comparing the sizes for a couple of seconds before his words brought her attention back up.
Her eyes widened and she felt her cheeks go warm. suddenly flustered, but in a good way, while he looked at her.
She did an admirable job on keeping most of her composure though.
"Yes, I suppose that's very true,"
She blinked then smiled warmly at him, tightening her hands a little into his.

It shouldn't have been possible to smile more than he already was, or to pour more warmth into his expression, but he did. Even still tired and recovering from everything in the past month, he felt like he could do anything right now.

He settled for fitting his hands more closely into hers - he could do this, she felt the same, he could want this one thing and be better for it. "Walk you back?"

He could want this.

Her knees felt a little weak, but she knew she could walk.
It was very late, having spent much of her time agonizing about when to approach Hayes.
At his offer she gave him a grateful smile and nodded. "Sure."

She shifted her weight, prying her eyes away from him to allow her a glance over at the elevator, and hall.
For a moment she had forgotten where they had been, surprised to find they were in one of the tech department's halls.

Barely looking, Hayes reached out and hit the call button again. The action reminded him their whole interaction had carried out in what was technically the foyer to his department, and that only the late hour and the grace of some unnamed gods had kept it from becoming a public scene.

"So." Still smiling, he turned back to Faleen as the elevator started counting down. "Professional on duty, yeah?" Somewhere in the back of his head a niggling little voice reminded, And technically you're her boss.
