"Yeah. The one on the desk with the girls, that's my aunt and cousins and me and my brother; the one on the shelf is Mom and Dad and us." Jordan smiled a little. "I had a few days to think about it. Had time to pack a bag. Wasn't going to leave those behind." His expression shifted to melancholy. "Hope my Tia wasn't sad for too long."

His eyes flicked to the healing injury, and he nodded. "Most of us have a little of the crazy," he said. "Some more than others, some better hidden than others."

He rested his elbows on his knees and studied her face. "The thing is, these creatures have faces and voices and personalities, but they feed on humans. The ones that we see in Halloween may not look so awful, but they come to our world to create terror and kill humans. That's how they stay alive. They're predators, and we're their prey. Unlike most humans, though, people with Fear sensitivity can fight back and defend ourselves and others." He laced his fingers together, his eyes solemn and sincere as he spoke. "We may be outnumbered, but for every monster a Hunter takes down, there are many humans, adults and children, who won't have to live in fear of a threat they can barely understand. I think that's worth doing."

"Ah got asked ta come here in the middle'a performin' arson so Ah f'gur'd be best ta come along an' not go home. Mah aunt or brother probably stopped lookin' fer me by now, even if they did get a bit worried." Enough, talking about her family, really. The more she would think about them the more she'd want to see her brother and the more she might try to find a way home somehow. That train of thought seemed stupid, she liked Deus, but that also could mean she was slowly being brainwashed into enjoying her time here.

When Ofelia noticed Jordan looking at her face her cheeks instantly turned red and she looked away, clearly embarrassed. The flustered look stayed as she glanced at him from the corner of her eye (she had to turn her head a bit since she was stupid and turned her head to the right), but she was still paying attention to what he said. Their sacrifice would make it okay for others? "But aren't we jus' gonna die wit'out people knowin'? Aren't we jus' wastin' our lives for people who dun even know our names ta thank us?" She was thinking back to that file she'd seen on the computer, the reports. "Ah dun wanna become another grave in that cemetery 'cause this place makes me think dyin' fer a cause is worth it." Ofelia turned and looked at him fully, her cheeks still red but her eyes serious as well. "This place is gonna make us all end up like those people from twelve years ago, isn't it? Would anyone even mourn mah passin'?"

Jordan laughed without humor. "If you need a less abstract reason, something more solid than idealism, I can provide that too; your family's not looking for you, you're legally dead. We no longer exist in the world outside, and we don't have the option to go back. Which I realize," he added, "isn't terribly convincing for my not-a-cult argument, but that's a moot point."

He shrugged one shoulder. "Hunters don't retire. Once you bond, you'll die in combat or sleep the rest of your life in a pod. It's your choice as to whether you waste what you have now or not." Then he sighed. "For what it's worth, I'd mourn you. This is what we chose - what I chose - and I'm choosing to dedicate myself to it. Is that useless, or a waste of life? Maybe, but I refuse to believe that."

" . . . dead? They...they said I was dead?" Her accent was gone, or at least it seemed to be gone, and Ofelia stared blankly at Jordan before she turned and looked at the wall. Her mouth was slightly open, her lips barely parted, and for a brief moment she sat stunned and silent. A few raggid breaths escaped before they were followed by shaky laughter, and Ofelia placed a hand on the top of her head as she turned back to her superior, the laughter bitter and hollow. "Well, s'good ta know then. Ah wonder if they had a funeral for me - Ah'dda like ta seen that." More uneasy chuckles.

Hick. Rue's voice piped in her head, the tone hard to place. Was she trying to comfort Ofelia, or. . . ? Well, at least now when you die people won't have to worry about you. You can rot where you lay. ******** no of course she wasn't trying to comfort Ofelia. Rue didn't know the meaning of the word comfort.

As Jordan went on to say no retirement, either death or the pods, Ofelia felt a cold wave of fear run down her back. Just.. . just what the hell had she gotten herself into? This wasn't a club, it wasn't a cult - it was supposed to be her way of life? She shook her head, trying to scatter the thoughts, when he said something about mourning her. "Eh? Nah, ya wouldn' cry fer me but the thought's nice all the same. Honestly Ah dunno if people can say they'd cry or not cry fer someone 'til that situation comes up. Sort'a like the whole 'would Ah try an' take a gun from the person pointin' it at me'. Dun really know 'til it happens."

Jordan sighed again. "It's a practical concern. If someone's relatives are running an intensive search for them in the belief that they're still alive, it's going to be very hard for them to take on any missions in a wide area around where they lived. As it is, we're not allowed to return to where we came from. We're dead. We can't go back."

"I wouldn't be happy to find out that you were gone," he said gently. "It's probably smarter not to get attached to anyone, because any mission could be your last. But I'd rather care than not care. What you make of what you have, that's up to you."

She's not taking it well, Ferros said.

I don't think she understood what she was accepting. Too late to change her mind now, though.

"Well Ah f'gur'd that much, wit' the whole wantin' ta see family members. Ah always thought Ah'd be on the lam on account'a burnin' stuff down. Plus Ah might'a destroyed mah aunt's house, so. . . " Ofelia tried to talk herself into accepting it but the more things she said the more hollow it felt. It was funny, her concerns about this place being a cult were the last thing on her mind. Now all she could think was how her family had been told she was dead and the only way out was to either be back in a pod or in a box in the ground.

In a way, she was terrified and wanted to call Jordan a liar and run from the room and cry. It was something she could do and she doubted she'd be blamed but. . . well, Ofelia couldn't do that. It wasn't in her to just take it and cry. She was the type to either forget, forgive, or deny the ******** out of it. Ofelia might as well have started to introduce herself as Cleopatra to people, she was the queen of denial after all.

"The whole not gettin' attached - is that why Ah see so many couples though? People jus' clinin' ta one another so they'll have someone ta mourn or someone ta mourn 'em?"

"Maybe," Jordan said, and thought a little guiltily about his own reaction to the realization that he might not have much time left, himself. Was he rationalizing? Probably. That wasn't something to think about now. "I think it's a reminder that there's something to live and fight for, too. If you have connections, if you care about people and they care about you, you're more likely to keep going and keep trying." He fell silent for a few moments, reflecting. Then he said, "Sorry to be so blunt about it. But I think you needed to know."

You're an idiot so people need to be blunt with you, hick. Tell him that, he looks like he feels horrible for having to speak with you. Rue's voice was a needle in Ofelia's ear, each word having an emphasis on it that wasn't needed. It was so clear which sex the knuckledusters preferred, down to the point where the trainee was being told what to say by a weapon. Naturally, Ofelia obeyed - it wasn't worth having someone scream in her head all night.

"Well, s'okay. Ah'm retarded an' unless someone spells it out fer me Ah won' understand it. It's better that someone Ah know an' trust tells me straight out than fer me ta jus' stumble on it by mahself an' assume the worst." Ofelia rubbed the back of her neck, still chuckling that hollow laugh. "An' yer right, Ah can only hope Ah find someone Ah can hold on ta. Findin' someone ta live fer might jus' be worthwhile, an' it'd be sommin' else ta know someone thinks'a me as a reason fer livin'." She sounded doubtful, as if in her mind she believed something like that could never happen in the slightest.

Rue, for her part, was in total agreement that Ofelia would be forever alone.

"We - the Strays, I mean, the group I woke up with - weren't told until a good six months had passed," Jordan said quietly. "Here, you can have a day off the island to go Christmas shopping, here's your ID card with your fake name, oh by the way you're officially dead. I would have preferred to know up front. It wouldn't have changed my decision, but being kept in the dark pisses me off."

Ferros rumbled. I am here.

I know. Thanks. Aloud, he said, "We may not have a choice about backing out, but everyone's reason to keep going is their own. Kind of like life anywhere, I guess; you find some kind of reason and you use it to keep yourself on track."

"Oh no, dun worry - Ah'm not plannin' on runnin' away or doin' sommin' stupid. Fer as weird an' vague as this place is its mah home now, plus like ya said - Ah'm dead. People in Georgia dun take kindly ta things supposed ta be dead - they shoot 'em on sight." Ofelia didn't really know if that was true or not but for all purposes she honestly wasn't willing to try and find out. People with guns tended to shoot first, make excuses way later. "Also knowin' Ah'm dead does answer a few questions b'for Ah went ta ask 'em, so really - thank ya fer tellin' me." Either was in super denial like always or else Ofelia was quickly accepting the truth about the fact. The end result though was that the hollow chuckles had stopped and she was smiling faintly, not her usual wide grin that meant she was up to something. "Ah jus' hope knowin' Ah'm dead brings mah family peace."

Rue didn't really believe anything Ofelia was saying, she could see into the teen's heart and mind without any barriers after all. She stayed silent though, deciding which bits of information she could use at a future date to make Ofelia bend to her will without having to resort to the midnight screaming. Having someone more than willing to do her bidding was pleasing.

Ofelia shifted in her chair and looked around the room again, finally settling back on Jordan. "How long have ya been here?" To think of it, Ofelia had never really asked people personal questions before.

"I hope so." Jordan left it at that; dwelling any further on what either of them had left behind wouldn't do any good. It was up to Ofelia now to make her peace with the facts. Or not, but he hoped she could come to terms with it. Had he chosen the wrong approach? Maybe. No way to know.

"Almost a year," he answered. "It was pretty rough at first, honestly."

"A year, really? Whoa." Ofelia was surprised, but not too much. It was obvious people had to have been here for a while, not everyone could have come out at the same time she did, but to be here for so long much have been interesting enough. Also, come to think of it, how long had she been there? She looked down at her hands and folded a few fingers, counting. The answer she came up with was 'long enough'. "Ah hope Ah live long 'nough ta say Ah've been here a year. People talk 'bout missions an' stuff makes me think Ah won' live ta see mah birthday in May."

Ofelia wasn't really a fatalist though so she had the belief she'd live to see her birthday. Maybe there could be cake or ice cream, things she doubted considering the state of the kitchens, but she would just enjoy spending time with people who liked her. She had a while to think about it though, her birthday wasn't for another couple of weeks, so no need to dwell on it.

"How did ya get used ta bein' here, ta knowin' all this stuff? Did it jus' kinda become routine fer ya?"

"It's dangerous; I won't tell you that it's not." Jordan watched Ofelia steadily. "But you're learning and getting better. I think your odds are pretty good."

He considered the question. "It took some getting used to," he admitted. "But after a while, it just stopped being weird. Except for the occasional patch of really bizarre stuff here and there," he added, and laughed. "But after a while it just becomes normal, for lack of a better word."

"Mah brother said Ah was always slow ta understand but kinda quick ta learn. No idea what he means there but Ah f'gur in the end so long as Ah'm left standin' no one can complain, right?" Well, if there was one thing Ofelia had confidence in it was her ability to survive. Not many kids could take an injury to the face like she did and come out well enough, or at least that's what the doctors always told her. Ofelia always expected them to lie to her, just as her brother started to do as she got older and as her aunt had always done to her from the day they met. A sigh escaped her lips as the rubbed the back of her head, glancing over at the open door. "Ah'mma excuse mahself, dun wanna take up too much'a yer time. Ah know ya said Ah could always talk ta ya but Ah know ya gotta be tired of listenin' ta someone like me ramble crazy."

She pushed herself to fer feet, stretching her arms and listening to the sounds of unhappiness Rue was professing at them having to leave the company of such a fine young man. We had better come back here with better timing next time around. Perhaps we should stalk him until he leaves from a shower and then somehow happen upon him. Ofelia's ears turned slightly red, but she waved it off and tried to clear her mind. Oepning her mouth, she spoke again with a few steps towards the door already taken.

"Oh though, b'for Ah head out, can Ah ask ya sommin'? Actually, s'more like a request." If it was Jordan she thought it might actually work out.

Makes sense to me. Jordan kept that thought to himself, though. No use offending her accidentally. He smiled amiably instead. "If you've got questions or concerns, you can text or come around, all right?"

"A request?" He arched an eyebrow curiously. "Ask away."
