She immediately regretted saying anything at Aria's next reaction, frowning at the new information she was given. One mist - one Aria. Just the woman who had all but crumpled next to her. However, she had a more certain response in her this time, moving to crouch next to the older woman, putting her arm over her shoulder and leaning her head against her's.
"You haven't failed me until you quit on me." she answered, calm. In the back of her head, Nicodemus seemed to approve of Cass's forgiving nature. "I have time. I can be ready as long as you're willing to help me get there. I can put in the effort, I can put in the hard work. I will, but I can't if you're already thinking you've failed me." Cass tried to assure. "I trust you."
After a moment, Cass made a point to redirect the conversation. "Now, we can't let Beau have gotten all riled up about ducks and then sit here and not give them to her, right?" she smiled, trying to pick the older hunter up a bit.

Aria didn't move when Cass reached out to comfort her, concentrating on breathing. She would not think of the labyrinth. She would not recall the looks on their faces when she stood up, still alive and left for dead: pain and despair mixed with a brief fluttering of hope. She would not reimagine what it was like to kneel down next to them one by one and check for a pulse, to beg and plead with a weapon to willingly part from their bonded in order to keep serving. She refused to recall how her hands shook when they'd painfully tilt their chins up, exposing their throat and making one last request. Aria's breath caught as she recalled the rush of warmth that covered her hands when she filled those requests.
The division leader closed her eyes, fighting off the memories that threatened to creep back. They were getting worse. Aria wondered briefly if she would require stronger medicine to send her into a blissful sleep. Hell, not even Lance's presence as enough to fend off the nightmares sometimes. He had to wake her up more than once and hold her tight, hands running down her soothingly to calm her.
"It will be a lot of work," Aria began softly when she managed to find the words. "There will be a lot of work involved. You will be pushing yourself to the limit. And even then, it might not be enough. Do you still think you could handle it?"

She couldn't even imagine what Aria was thinking of in that long silence, but Cass knew her answer; "If I can't handle this, then I'll die anyways. I'd rather have a fighting chance then fall back and think I'm just going to make it by some magical fluke."
The pressure of a stalled Horseman still played through her head some nights - and that hadn't been as close to death as she imagined she'd ever get. She'd seen those floating bodies, Barney and Sandy, as they died for them as well. Death was a real possibility, and even if she didn't make it to the 'real' showdown, she needed to make sure that it didn't repeat. History couldn't repeat itself. She'd had nightmares of what would have happened if it hadn't been stopped, of her ribs collapsing in on themselves, piercing through her, drowning in her own blood.
And they wouldn't be the last nightmares she'd have either. She knew they wouldn't be.
"I will adapt to it - isn't that my job?"

"A wise answer," Aria replied, nodding and standing up, clutching the rifle in her hands. She took a deep breath, grasping her fears and nightmares and placing them aside, freezing and locking them away somewhere deep and dark. There was no time to be haunted, much less here of all places. Part of her was aware of how weak she suddenly appeared in front of the trainee. The other part didn't care. Aria was human, after all.
A silence stretched between them as they continued to walk. Aria did not offer to speak, instead whistling softly for Beau to come trotting back towards them. The silence seemed to stretch before Aria broke it again. "When we get there, we'll need to set up a blind. A blind is basically a sort of camouflage that will hide us from the birds. Ducks have surprisingly good eyesight, and around this time of year we may also run into geese."

Cass didn't mind the silence. It was probably a good time for Cass to think that she'd never mention 1999 to Aria ever again - true fact? She probably would end up asking about it in a more professional setting after a couple of months. She needed to shadow the other divisions first. She needed to figure out what they did so she could pull her weight as one of them in the future if she had to. Did Cass feel disheartened at all by Aria having a moment?
No.
Cass had moments at times too.
However, it seemed that as they got closer to the lake, Cass made a point to keep her hands to herself.Otherwise she would have been practically rubbing her face in Beau's fur and continuing her puppy-talk from earlier. Dogs - Cass probably had her favorite animal ever in those. Then again, she didn't have experience with Cats, so they'd probably win her over too.
"A blind, got it." Cass took a note of that term. Did they have 'blinds' they used on the Monsters too? Maybe she'd ask about that later. "Geese are mean, definitely don't want those seeing us. What do we make the blind out of? Just what is out there? Like branches and stuff?" Natural camouflage seemed like it would be the most likely, since it was a lesson of using what was available to you in the right circumstances - or rather the wrong circumstances.
So with her knife and maybe a few other things that would be on one's person in such circumstances.....

"Providing there's been someone there recently, the blind should already be there," Aria answered. "There's several different variations, but the one we usually have on hand is woven out of dried grass. It's too wet in the season now to make our own, and," Aria glanced up at the sky, adding, "It would take us too long to make one. Perhaps later if you're still interested I can show you how to weave one."
Hopefully whoever was out here last put it back where they usually kept it. If it had mold or wasn't usable... Aria bit back a grimace. A replacement would most likely need to be supplied by her. As usual.
"Once we get the blind up, we're going to wait. They'll probably hear us coming, so we'll need to wait for them to come back. After that..." Aria grinned, nodding towards Cass. "I hope you're ready to find out how much of a trigger finger you've got on your gun. You'll need to shoot and aim for their heads. Once the first shot goes off, they'll all take off. Shooting it through the body will probably wound it, and it might get away. Always shoot to kill. We're here to feed ourselves, not the local wildlife."

"I'd very much like to learn how to make one sometime. It sounds like it'd be a useful skill to have." Cass nodded back. Still, it sounded like she'd been rather on-the-money about things, but like Aria said, it would probably take a while, and they probably couldn't afford to be out in the brush all night. Not when the nighttime wildlife came alive to get them.
Despite the fact that Aria had mentioned that the ducks would probably hear them coming anyways, Cass couldn't help but try to walk as quietly as she could, grimacing at any cracks made underneath her feet as she moved. She needed stealth feet! Silence! How on earth did they sneak up on the monsters if she was so loud? Well, ducks weren't monsters, it was more of the whole practical application that she was thinking about.
"I'll be the first to admit I could always have a little bit more work with my aim." she said sheepishly. Yes, she could hit the bodies of things easy enough, but the only headshot she'd ever really made was to a Pricolici who was pinned with a blade already. That had made it easy to shove the gun in her mouth and pull the trigger.
"It'd be more humane to just kill 'em in one shot instead of let them suffer too.." Cass offered up as well as a motivator to kill them in one shot. Even if the 'food' part actually made her stomach make a rather hopeful noise, causing the trainee to blush a bit. Oh, that was awkward.

Aria grinned. "Then perhaps sometime in the future we'll go on a camping trip with knives only and rough it. It's not too bad -- it's kind of fun once you get over the potential amount of suck." The division leader's gaze grew distant as she recalled that particular memory. "And have good weather. When we do it, I promise we won't go to Africa or to South America. Or to a jungle. Something like an American or European forest might do nicely." Or it had the potential to turn into a giant train wreck. There was always that. The two Mists made it down to the spot, whereupon Aria demonstrated how to properly place the blinds. And how to lure out ducks. And after three months several hours of waiting, there were ducks. Aria quietly raised her rifle, loaded and ready to fire. She gestured towards CASS wordless: take the first shot.Quote: DUCK HUNTIN because dice make everything cooler ok - Roll 20d20 oh yeah- 1-5: head shot, insta-duck kill - 6-10: Body shot, must hit two times for a "kill" - 11-20: miss Each roll represents one bullet. Rolling 1-5 instantly kills one duck. Landing on 6-10 is one bullet in the side of ze duck, must roll within this range again to "kill" it. You can miss up to three times in a row before a duck flies away. Let's say I rolled... 11, 12, 20, 13, 6, 11 Miss, miss, miss, miss, hit, miss. I fired six shots, only one hit. Reloading... 20 8 19 18 16 10 Miss, hit, miss, miss, miss, hit One of my shots hit, but the duck flew off. My bullet managed to hit the next one though! Reloading... 14 18 4 9 8 19 Miss, miss, BOOM HEADSHOT, hit, hit, miss. First two bullets missed, got a headshot, killed a second duck with two hits. This is~ round one/clip one. Go for it!

"Will Beau come on that trip too?" Cass asked, sounding hopeful as she pat the lab on the side. Best. Dog. Ever. Her favorite. Good dog, best friend. "I don't mind where we go, might as well learn everything, right?" she was all smiles, all excitement as she followed after the Mist lead into their little waiting shelter.
She was quite the attentive student, as well, seeming quite excited to learn even the smallest of tasks. She'd never been camping before the island, it was like..life skills all over. If she hadn't already had her 'career', she totally would have been able to get some sort of job with all of this.
Maybe. Or she'd be really good at running away from her parents.....sigh.
Never the less, they had a few months hours to wait for the ducks, and Cass tried to not seem bored waiting. This was quite the task for a teenager, but Nicodemus kept her entertained with useless rambling about Marcus needing to keep his hands off of Cass-lawn and all that stuff.
But when the ducks had settled, the trainee shifted slowly, holding Nicodemus in both hands as she found a surface to rest him against and aim. Take the first shot.......
You have twenty bullets. Use them wisely.
<>
That's fine.
Okay, all she had to do was not miss, right? Oh god. This was actually kind of stressful, but she tried to not rush as she pulled the trigger once...twice....three..four..five times.

Her first round of shots wasn't bad, hitting each of her targets and sending two of them down. Good. That was a good start.
It was when she fired again it seemed like her aim had gotten a little off. One duck went down as she hit it again, but the other two seemed to have gotten antsy enough to want to start moving. Damn! She'd need to hit them both more firmly if they still had that kind of energy. Better to kill them now than let them bleed out and suffer, right?
Still, she had to remain calm. Always calm.

Steeling her aim again, she took a deep breath before she fired, the two going down with less efficiency than she would have liked as she looked up towards her left temple:
<>
That was ten. Two per duck down. You have ten left.
Cass looked at the gun, then up towards the lake. Okay, between herself and Aria, five was probably plenty, but given how things were back home..... she'd get a few more for the sake of rations and what not. Damn kitchen.

She pulled the trigger five more times, trying to not spend too long aiming, but not firing completely wildly either.
Again, her aim was rather effective as three of her targets went down without a fight. Another one flailed as it was hit, and she could tell she'd have to shoot it again to put it down, but one seemed to wonder what that wind that had just blown past it was.
Hmmm.
You've downed 8 now. Going to try for those last two?

Cass again settled in to aim before she pulled the trigger two more times - down and down. Like clockwork. Cass licked her lower lip before she seemed to consult with Nicodemus some more.
Three left.
<>
You've killed ten with seventeen bullets. That's not too bad. Save your ammo just in case.
Cass looked to Aria to see what the older woman thought, mouthing a; "More?" to her.

Aria shrugged. "Beau's more of a duck-dog than general hunting, but we can see." She didn't make any promises. A dog would be useful to have to hunt with, and yet... Truthfully, Aria wasn't sure how well Beau would cope with roughing it. In her experience, Beau was rather sheltered for a dog. She stayed at her "home" in the kennel when she wasn't out running with other hunters, or hunting herself. And when it came to Halloween creatures...
Cass fired her pistol. Aria held off on firing her shotgun, watching. The original plan was to stay on standby and finish off a duck that Cass missed before it got away. She didn't need to bother. When Cass looked to her, Aria shook her head and lowered her rifle without firing a shot. "You exceeded my expectations! I was under the impression that you needed more practice with that pistol of your's, but..." She grinned, then whistled sharply. "Beau! Retrieve!"
The dog didn't need to be told twice. As soon as she heard her name her ears perked up; the second word had her off and running, splashing into the water towards the floating bodies. The retriever began to bring back the ducks, dropping them off one by one to the two Mist girls. "You've got more than enough. I think we're good to wrap this up and head back." Aria added, passing Cass a ball of twine. "Go ahead and dismiss your weapon. Next step: turning these into food."

Cass beamed. Praise? All for her? Oh thank you! She'd put it in a little frame and hang it on the wall of her heart. "I try to get in as much practice as I can with Nicodemus. I find my real struggle is not overworking one arm," she glanced at the blade on the other end of the chain, "and then not relying too heavily on one half or the other. Balance, I guess. It's too easy for me to just pick one or the other, it defeats the purpose."
For a moment, she watched Beau as she splashed and retrieved the ducks, doing another count. Ten exactly. That could have been worse, but it wasn't bad for her first try! Beginners luck, surely. Cass dismissed Nicodemus, settling the weight of his chain around her waist before she took the ball of twine, turning it over in her hands thoughtfully before she looked to Aria again.
"Alright then. What do I need to do first?" she assumed it had something to do with the twine she'd been handed.
