The way Sasha's face turned red like a tomato made Candace laugh and pat her shoulder. "Careful, Sasha! You'll make yourself fall over if your blood rushes too quickly to your face!" She teased, watching the girl's face. Ohhh? It was subtle but her expression was changing. It was adorable! Was she conversing with her weapon? Candace was happy to just watch her until the girl cleared her throat and continued on to say Robert was..
...Nice.
Candace tried not to roll her eyes. Robert? Nice? Pfft. "I have. Used to have them a lo--...ha..had you never had a donut before?" What?! How did a person go their entire life without having a goddamn donut?! That just...that was...what?! Didn't even find Sasha's staring to be awkward, just so shocked by the fact that this girl had gone this long with never having had a goddamn donut.
Who does that!?
"Yeah, it does sound great...is there one you want to do in particular? There's pod observation, minipet care which is really popular, various portals on the island that need observing and the occasional defense annnnd then there's also this old abandoned down just outside of the facility that apparently needs reconstruction." Candace wasn't sure why. It wasn't like anyone outside of the hunters lived on this island.

Sasha gave a nervous laugh, fanning her face with her hands for a brief moment. "I'm um. I'm so sorry. I ah.. well I didn't, you know, experience a lot of things growing up. My papa home-schooled me in the topics he thought would be best. For me. Like, personally. So I know some math and stuff, but. We focused on like. Painting, music. Some singing. He wanted me to get into a good school, but uh. Well. Here I am!"
She laughed weakly.
"So.. no doughnuts, nothing like that. Most of the food we ate we like.. grew ourselves. Papa liked to be self-sufficient." Sasha shrugged. Was that weird? Probably. Candace probably thought she was weird now.
Sasha cleared her throat, finishing with a hurried, "I've never done portal duty before."

Candace raised a brow, watching the way Sasha fanned herself as if Candace was giving her the vapors. She chuckled. What a silly girl. "Here you are indeed. How old are you, anyway? Most of the trainees here are younger than Jerry and I." She couldn't think of any that were older than her aside from Jerry. Painting, music and singing...she really was a better match for Jerry. That thought hurt her heart to think about, swallowing hard and laughing quietly along with Sasha. "There's nothing wrong with living that way. If you can live like that I think it's very commendable. It's not an easy thing to do, I'd imagine."
Portal duty? Alright then. What would be a good place to take Sasha. She seemed too delicate for the jungle, neither of them were ranged-weapon users so the lighthouse while nice would also probably not be the best. Was she afraid of heights? Hm.. "Alright. I'll let you decide," Candace said as she grabbed her hunter coat and scarf, picking up her hiPhone as well and putting it in her pocket. "Lighthouse or Underwater Observation. One is high up, at the top of the lighthouse, and the other is underwater. Both have very lovely views but they each offer different discomforts." Fear of heights and claustrophobia. ******** yeah.

"I'm twenty-one," Sasha hummed as they moved out of Candace's dorm. "It was ...fun. Papa tried his best to turn it into a game, I guess. Coming here, though.. and meeting all these new people from different ways of life? It kind of makes me wonder... I don't know. It's probably um. Really silly, but ... it kind of makes me feel ah... awkwardly inept, sometimes."
Sasha tapped her chin when presented with their options. "Lets take the um. Gosh, I don't have a preference. I bet the view from the lighthouse is nice, but I've never been like.. underwater before." She debated for a few moments before chirping, "Underwater!"
Sasha couldn't help but be curious about what had transpired between Candace and Jerry. While Candace was everything that Sasha aspired to be (but likely wouldn't), Jerry was... well, Jerry was the nicest man that Sasha had ever met. And he'd given her a kazoo. And! He was going to try to find a flute for her! As much as she wanted to ask Candace what had happened... it really was none of her business.
"How old are you? And ah.." her cheeks pinked again, "how old is um.. Jerry?"

Twenty-one? How precious! "Culture shock, perhaps? You're fine, rose bud. I think it's an endearing trait." For the moment, that is. There was no telling if it would get annoying later. "If you ever need someone to talk to I'll listen, okay? Hell, if you need someone to hit I'll be your punching bag. I'm good for it." Though she'd most likely hit back if it was on the training field. It was the same offer she'd extended to Clarice, though Clarice's had been a one-time deal. Anymore spars like that and Candace would have more to worry about than a concussion.
Underwater it is! Candace gave a nod and reached to take Sasha's hand, leading her out of the room and dorms to head for the underwater observatory. If she knew Sasha was beginning to consider her a role model of sorts she would definitely be telling her that while she was flattered..don't be her. Or...wait. Maybe if she acted more like Candace Jerry wouldn't want her? She was worried, sure. Sasha had said she was on Candace's side but Jerry...he fawned after her because she was pretty.
Sasha was pretty.
Very pretty..
"I'm twenty-three, Jerry is twenty-six." Candace answered simply, gently swinging their hands between them. "I don't think he wants anyone to know how old he is, though. I don't see anything wrong with it, but whatever makes him happy."
Candace was finding she liked this. She liked this girl. She was so inquisitive, and Candace was more than happy to answer ever question she asked. They were almost to the observatory.

"Thanks, Candace. I really, really appreciate it. You. All your help."
Okay, maybe holding hands was something friends did. She'd held hands with Jerry, and now Candace. A harmless, friendly show of affection, most likely, and so Sasha didn't feel... weird. She merely stared down at their hands for a brief moment before glancing up at Candace.
Well. Now was the perfect time to work on choir recruitment, wasn't it?
"So... I am sure you've heard that Jerry is um. Trying to start up a choir? You.. you said you don't sing or whatever.. but do you play any instruments? I ah.. I told him I'd help him out with it. It seemed to cheer him up." Her free hand slipped into her jacket pocket and fussed with the bright yellow kazoo therein. She'd been carrying around the silly thing since Jerry had given it to her.
Maybe if she could get Candace on the choir... yes, that was a perfect idea!

At the mention of a choir Candace chuckled and sighed. "He's still trying to form that? I admire his persistence." She said with a small smile, trying to hide the fondness behind it. This was good. He needed something to occupy him, something he enjoyed. "He's tried to recruit me already. I don't play any instruments, and I don't sing. I encouraged him but I just...I don't.." She waved a hand, opening a door that led to the underwater conservatory. "After you, rose bud."
Waiting for Sasha she then followed her inside, slipping her hands into her pockets and looking toward the clear wall that took up one entire side of the room. Not so bad. She saw shadows, but they didn't seem terribly threatening. "Hmm..? What've you got there, rose bud?" Candace asked when she noticed Sasha's hand in her pocket, looking curious.

"Yes, we talked about it at length the other day," Sasha hummed softly as she gave a little skip and moved into the conservatory. "We're going to work on flyers soon. I have supplies in my dorm. Like, ah. You know. Markers." She gave a little choked cough.
"Crayons."
Oh, way to be an adult, Sasha, she mentally chided herself. Markers, crayons. Honestly?
Nona cackled evilly.
"Oh, this? She pulled the kazoo out of her pocket. "It's my kazoo. I picked yellow because um. It's ah.. it's a happy color, don't you think? Jerry gave it to me."

Markers...and crayons. Was this chick for real? Candace simply stared as she pulled the kazoo out of her pocket, seeming uninterested until she said Jerry gave it to her. Wait, what? Jerry..gave her one of his kazoos? He never...gave her one. Though he did buy her other things. But he gave Sasha a kazoo, something that made him happy. She tried not to frown, instead forcing a soft laugh and nodding. "Yeah, yellow is a happy color. I prefer purple myself. Rich, royal, proud." She grinned and picked at her black scarf. She'd much rather have a purple scarf...maybe when it was time for her promotion she could ask for a new color? She'd have to see about doing that! She had priorities, okay? Her life couldn't center around Jerry. She needed to be more productive. Candace couldn't be a trainee forever. Being a trainee now drove her crazy despite knowing she still needed so much training.
"That's sweet of him, though. He's very sweet. Very...very sweet. An amazing man, really. I never deserved him for even a second." She sighed, looking out at the shadows drifting in and out of her line of vision in the clear wall.

"Oh, Candace," Sasha narrowed her eyes at the other woman. "You mustn't talk like that. You are.. you are just." She shook her dark head before reaching out to brush a hand against Candace's shoulder. "You talk about yourself like... I don't know." The younger trainee gave a breathless little laugh, shaking her head.
"Jerry is very nice. He's said he's going to try and find a flute for me. Ah.. anyway, enough about... enough about all that." She offered Candace a soft smile. The topic was one that seemed to sadden Candace, and that hadn't ever been Sasha's intent.
Taking a small tour around the room, Sasha peered through the glass and into the dark depths of the water beyond.
"Do you ever wonder where you would be if you ah.. if you hadn't come here?"

Oh goodness! What was this! A glare? A glare from sweet little Miss Sasha? Candace grinned and reached up to gently grasp Sasha's hand as she scolded her, tugging her in for a hug and nuzzling her cheek against the younger girl's head. So cute! "I talk about myself like I'm a terrible creature, hmmmm~?" She chuckled, swaying from side to side with the girl and looking out at the moving shadows in the distance while Sasha spoke of Jerry. A flute? She even played an instrument. ********. She was perfect for him. This wasn't fair. Why did a girl like this have to appear now? Now? This was some sick joke.
She released Sasha to let her wander the room, stretching her arms up over her head before folding them behind her head and just watching her. This was nice.. "A lawyer." She said simply with no hesitation or question to her answer. "It's what I was going to school for. I was almost finished, but I was recruited first...I don't regret my decision. I think I'm happier here than I would've been as a lawyer." She smiled, falling quiet for a good while. It was true. Despite everything she was so much happier like this.
"Every now and then I miss the life I had, but when I think back...it was terribly dull. I studied, studied, and studied. I barely had time for a social life. Sure, I'd go to parties every now and then but that wasn't often. I didn't date, I didn't have time for it. I didn't have any real hobbies that didn't involve my goals..because I was too busy studying. But now? Now I have time...I can socialize, I can date, I have a purpose..I'm happy." She walked to one of the chairs by the bookcase and sat down in it, leaning back and relaxing. She didn't get to talk like this very often. Candace rarely admitted how dull her life was before Deus Ex. It was boring as hell compared to her life now.
"What about you, Sasha? What would you be doing?"

"You do, Candace. And .. y-you really shouldn't." Sasha shook her head against Candace's shoulder before she was released, folding her arms in front of her so that she could clasp her hands together. Sasha listened intently to what the other woman had to say about her life before Deus. She had to admit that she was a little surprised. Sasha would never have pegged Candace as a lawyer. "You're.. you're a wonderful person."
Sasha brightened at the word purpose. Her expression fell immediately when Candace asked what she'd be doing if not for Deus. She blinked a few times, turning away from Candace to stare out at the blurry shadows that moved beyond. What a question. Sasha didn't really know how to answer it. She didn't really want to answer it.
"I.. I don't know. I didn't have anything. I didn't know anyone. I'd always been.. I don't know. I probably would have stayed where I was, you know? Like. Playing my flute in the park for coin, or selling paintings to tourists. I don't know." She cleared her throat, fighting the knot that had suddenly formed there.
"It doesn't matter anymore, really, right? What we would have done, could have done. We're... we're here now, aren't we? It's ... it's something worth doing, isn't it?" Did she sound like she needed a little reassurance?
Maybe.

Candace couldn't help but smile as Sasha insisted she was a wonderful person. She really didn't know Candace all that well, huh? Even H said she was a terrible creature, and she had to agree after the s**t she'd been doing behind Jerry's back for all these months. She was the worst. She didn't let it show on her face, especially because Sasha seemed upset by something she'd said. Oh dear. What had it been? She'd like to know so she didn't repeat it later...
"Oh? Sheltered life, hmm? That explains a lot...you play flute? That's lovely." And she painted. She was pretty amazing. Sasha was almost perfection.
Candace smiled, reaching over to tuck a bit of Sasha's hair behind her ear. "No, it doesn't matter. What we're doing here is good, a higher purpose greater than anything we could have ever accomplished otherwise. Protecting mankind and all that dramatic stuff...if you feel overwhelmed about anything you can come to me, okay? I'll be here~." Not..here but Sasha would know what she meant. She smiled, leaning in to give Sasha a kiss on the cheek. "Don't be sad, okay? A frown doesn't suit your pretty face."

It was important for Sasha to know that they were fighting for everything worth fighting for in the world - that what they were doing meant something. Sasha wasn't sure why it meant so much to her - she only knew that it did.
"I do play the flute. I ah.. I don't have mine. With me, I mean." Sasha's brows drew together. "On the island, I don't mean here with me right now in this room."
She waved a dismissive hand, looking pleased when Candace offered to be there for her. It was so nice to have friends. The thought was so alien to her - she'd never had another person that she could just talk to.
"Thanks, Candace," she breathed softly, fidgeting for a moment before wrapping her arms around the other woman. "I .. you're .. thanks for being my friend."

"Oh yeah? That's a shame. If you ever get your hands on another flute I'd love to hear it sometime." Candace was feeling better. Getting the topic away from Jerry helped. While Candace wouldn't sing, and didn't know any instruments, she did love music. She loved listening to it and dancing to it, but not so much performing it.
She was glad to see the girl happy again, looking very pleasantly surprised by the sudden hug initiated by Sasha instead of herself. Candace chuckled, returning the hug and nuzzling her cheek against the girl's head, toying lightly with her long hair. "You're a good girl. Don't ever change, okay? I'll always be your friend regardless, though." Granted it was a little early to determine that but Candace had a feeling Sasha would be able to win her over in any argument simply looking at her with those adorable doe eyes.
"Let's sit. We can chat some more since we'll be here a little while." Candace was not standing for however long they were in here. Too long, man. Too long.
