"You don't gotta avoid them, I'll avoid you AND them when you're together," Roch clarified. "Like when I'm hangin' out with Edel, I don't expect you to come over or somethin' like that, see?"
Then she brought up the trials. Well... crap. He frowned, not knowing how to reply to that.

He was confusing her further, and bringing up Edel wasn't helping. Just the mention of that ghoul's name sent shivers down her spine. Maybe she would go sit in the lava pools to make herself feel better. Humph.
"Can't you just ... not avoid me?" she said, perhaps a little bitterly, and very hypocritically. She was the poster child for avoiding her problems. "Even when Edel is with you I still talk with you ... Just really far away ... kind of ..."
More like not at all.
She felt like this argument was just circling in on itself. Danny layed herself out on the beanbag, stretching out to be more comfortable. "Can't we just be best friends? Please? I miss you Roch," she said, staring up at the ceiling. Maybe it was selfish, but she was sick of not having Roch to talk to and laugh with and eat food with. She missed her best friend!

"You don't talk to me when I'm hanging out with Edel," Roch pointed out. "Unless its in the middle of a fight. But yeah," he said. "We can be best friends again... except... ah... I got a team already, y'know, for the trials. And I don't think you wanna join it."
He wasn't looking at her. But he WAS looking seriously guilty.

Danny was sharing an equally guilty look when he chastised her about Edel. It was true, she was a whiny little witch whenever Edel came to the picture. She was humble enough to admit that.
Luckily Roch switched the subject back to the trials. Oh? So he already had a team all put together? Perfect!
"Of course I want to be on your team! I actually ... kind of came to ask you if you'd be on my team," she smiled at him, but he was looking away from her. She couldn't quite read his emotion. "Do you know where we sign up? I thought I heard something about telling your 3rd period teacher, but I talked to him and he said he didn't know."

"Edel... ah, Edel's on my team," he said. Then waited for her to explode on him again.

Danny was part way through standing up to go to the sign ups (wherever that would be), when Roch dumped a bucket of cold water on her.
Ice cold water.
She immediately flopped back onto the beanbag. "Why's Edel on our team?" she said, frowning, though surprisingly calmly. Roch knew she didn't like Edel. Why would he put her on their team? Danny had already told Rikki to talk to Roch about a team ... she assumed it would be the three of them, maybe with Moure and G like the haunted house.
So why would Roch put her on a team with Edel? She couldn't comprehend it. Their team wouldn't make sense with Edel. She'd mess everything up.

"Edel was caught by the hunters in the haunted house," he said. "She was stuck in a cage. They were gonna make her into a weapon, Danny. She went through a really bad time, and she needs... well, she needs to feel safe," he told her, trying to explain the problem. "And if she gets stronger, if she gets that blessing from the horsemen, then maybe she'll feel safer, y'know?"
He sighed, running a hand over his face. "I know you don't like her, but just like you like Yin, and would wanna help him with a problem--I wanna help her."

"Why can't someone else help her?" she said, "There are plenty of other people who can protect her. If she's such a big scareling, she should just go sit in Helma's office and cry." She spat the word cry like it was an insult, just because Edel could do it and she couldn't.
She realized she was being a bit unreasonable and thought for a moment. In an even quieter voice than before, she said, "Why'd you think of her before asking me?" Her arms pulled up to her sides. Just when she thought that everything had been going okay, Roch had to drop this bomb on her.
Danny had actually had a pretty good week. She'd found presents lying around in her room, and Rikki and her had started talking again. They were friends again! Not to mention the Amityville Springs had been recovered! She had homework to do with that still, but she'd get to it. All of her classes had been relaxed.
She'd even gone so far as to make up with Roch about the emblem, and now she basically got slapped in the face with Edel. It wasn't unlife-ending or something like that, but ... Well it still hurt.
The fire demonness stood up from the beanbag finally and took a step towards the door, but still remained somewhere near Roch. "Or did you even think of asking me? Were you just going to forget about me and go win the trials for yourself?!" Her voice was rising now. "Jack Roch do you even care anymore?" They had been so close. So jackdamn close. She took another step towards the door, her eyes searching for something in the room that she clearly couldn't find.

"Because I thought we were over," he said. "You REFUSED to listen to me, and I wasn't about to back down. You don't go askin' people you're fighting with to be on a team, Danny! Or did you forget that we haven't talked for a jackin' week or more? And I promised Edel--something."

Danny's face twisted up, but she turned her head so Roch wouldn't see it. He'd thought they'd just stop being friends? Even when she was mad at him, Danny never thought of him as anything but her best friend. Not to mention he said that you weren't supposed to ask people you were fighting with to be on your team ... but she'd come to the music room to do just that.
"Even if I'm mad at you, there's no one else I'd rather face some horsemen with," she said flatly, "Because I thought I could count on you for anything." Every word of it was true. If Professor Hellma told them they were going up against Jack himself, the only place Danny would feel safe was near her friends- that was just natural right?
The real question that was bothering her was ... well was it really that easy to just throw away their friendship for Roch?
She took a step more towards the door, this time intending to leave. Even though they were back to step one, she said, "Good luck in the trials." With that, she darted out the door, not wanting to deal with it any more.

And they were right back to where they'd started at, he thought with a groan. He really was gonna lose his best friend at this rate.
But he didn't chase her. He didn't believe in chasing what didn't want to be chased. Instead he stared at Desiree's edge, then shoved himself to his feet, intent on sharpening her again.
