"Simple?" he repeated. Had he come across some master scholar in philosphy? She didn't seem the type, but that would most certainly prove the old adage that looks could be deciving, would it not? "Inwould like to hear your answer, then, if you please. Doing so might better enable me to tender my own responce."

She frowned a bit. "I can't answer the question, though. I don't know the answer. If I'd known the answer, I wouldn't have asked. But you should know the answer, everyone knows what they are. Unless they don't, in which case I guess it makes sense and it's kind of sad and confusing for them, but still, you look like you know what you are. So, what are you?"

His head throbbed mildly.mwas she really so far advanced from him to confuse him so? She sounded almost akin to idiocy. "I meant could you answer for yourself so that I might be inspired as to my own answer," he clarified. He knew that some sages liked to press the queerant to ask questions more specifically attuned to the desired answer by feigning ignorance. She seemed to be a master at it.

"Isn't it obvious what I am? I mean, all you have to do is look at me and you can see. It's clear as day, or as the nose on your face. That's such an odd saying, don't you think? I've never really thought the nose on my face was particularly clear. How do you see the nose on your face? I guess since we have such long faces it's easier for us, but I've heard other creatures with smaller, or even no, noses say the same thing! It's strange."

He blinked, puzzled. Why had she avoided the question. Was it that she did not actually have any deep revelation and had been fishing to see if he had one that she could use? He supposed that was always possible, however, where possible, he preferred to think the best of others, so mayhaps she had some other reason. He chose to focus instead on what she had asked most recently about the nose on ones face. "Perhaps," he said, after giving it some consideration, "what they are saying is that it is not as clear to the individual, but to those who see it. Many thing about oneself are only clear to those a bit apart, usually those things which are best. Mayhaps the nose is in someway the best feature one physically has?"

She blinked rapidly at him, as though this had never occurred to her before. “And here I always thought it was just something that people said because it was something their parents said because it was something their parents said. You know, one of those sayings that loses meaning after time cuz no one remembers where it came from but everyone says it because everyone knows what it’s supposed to mean even though it doesn’t make sense and no one remembers why it would make sense. But your explanation does make sense! Except I thought that it was supposed to mean that something was plain as day, not that only outsiders would understand. That’s another one of those funny sayings. Plain as day. What kind of day? A sunny day? Could a sunny day be a plain day? I’d think that it would be a beautiful day. Unless you don’t like sunny days, in which case it might be a bad day, and that’s not plain either. Maybe a cloudy day? Except that’s not really plain, either. It’s more of a cloudy day, kinda a half and half day, you know? One of those bucket half full or empty things. It’s partly sunny or partly cloudy, depending on if you’re an optiomist or a pessimist. Personally, it think it’s still a good day, not a plain day. A rainy day wouldn’t be a plain day either, since it’d be drizzly and wet and gloomy, unless you like the rain, in which case it would be a good day…. So what IS a plain day, anyway?”

Inoshishioni listened to her speak, and considered her words. She did pose such interesting questions, did she not? He had never met a philosopher who spoke so rapidly, however he felt that if all great thinkers were too alike, then there would be no great thinkers at all, there would be one great line of thought with only minor deviations, for all would think in the same way. Well, actually, that was an interesting tangent. If too many were the same, then no matter how great they were, they were not special. Could that, perhaps, be then an answer to her question. Not the answer, clearly, never the answer. Well nearly never. Absolutes were both tricky and dangerous, and he preferred to not deal with them. Anyway, could that be an answer to a plain day? If a plain day could be... yes... that could work. He wanted to see what her counter argument would be. "Well, it seems, and correct me if I am mistaken, that you are more or less making plain synonymous with normal, or dare I even say, typical. If that is the case, then you are discounting cloudy days, rainy days, sunny days and what have you from being plain days as in each case something particular is happening that has the potential to affect the mood and perhaps behavior of the people who experience it, which would be to say, nearly everyone. Now, if nearly every day has an effect on nearly all the living beings, then it could be argued, perhaps, that a day that is able to effect the moods of living things would be, in fact, typical. Or if those words are taken as synonymous as I earlier inferred, plain. Which would make a plain day any day whose weather influences the majority of living beings who experience it, making whatever other days there are atypical and therefor not plain."

He nodded, proud of that line of reasoning, then realized that there was one more thing that he probably should add. "However, I do not believe that the saying 'plain as day' is actually referencing a plain day. What I would conjecture is that in fact the true intention of the statement, or at least how it is used as a colloquialism, is saying that if one is outside or can see the sky," and to the young soq, there were few who ever spent more then a few hours where they could not see the sky, "it is plain, in this case as synonymous with obvious - which goes back to the discussion that lead to this in fact - that it either is day or night, and that under most circumstances, nearly anyone could tell the difference. So, if in this case we can agree that obvious and plain are juxtaposible terms, and from your use both of this and' plain as the nose on your face' it seems that this could well be the case, then I believe that the phrase simply means that 'it is obvious'; because it is obvious if it is in fat day."

He paused and watched her, waiting, trembling slightly with excitement. It had been ages since he had someone to debate such deep matters with.
