He held his cup up, and then lowered it as a look of uncertainly passed. Despite proposing the toast, in the heat of the moment, because it felt right, he didn't have anything really prepared. Biting his lip, he swirled the liquid about the cup a moment. "Um...." His eyes danced about the boat, looking for inspiration, before floating back up to the boil.
"Uh.....To you! and....to me! To us!" He kept fishing for ideas. "To..." His eyes looked about. "....many more nice moments like this.....to living!" Yes. Especially that. Living.
He raised his cup.

"To living," he agreed, "and you, and us," the thorns snaked between the pillows, netting together. They found the boat sides, and crept upwards in the beginnings of a black canopy. Barth didn't try to squash them. They grew next to Calder better than they grew next to anyone else.
"And lazy afternoons in bad company. And..." and he was feeling a little reckless, "and I know I'm...I'm not very strong. Physically. It's not my- but I want you to know that I'll do whatever's in my power to protect you," he flushed, "and I know I'm a demon too so it's not very, that is to say, I err-"
More quietly, almost an embarrassed whisper,
"to love," he tapped his cup against Calder's.

Calder brought the cup to his lips, a smile spread across the lip of the cup as he looked up at Barth, flushing. His chest was tight, but even though his heart was pounding in his chest as if a thousand hooves were racing across his ribs, it felt amazing. That little, mumbled, word. He drank to that, before setting the cup down.
"I may not be that smart, of well-learned, or know about a lot of things everyone else knows. I'm not rich or know anyone special, ,and while I might be strong, I'm not powerful, but I hope you know I'd do whatever it would take to make you safe and happy. You mean a lot to be, Barth. Demon or not. I don't even see that. You've always listened to me, and never shut your door to me. Even with...how I look or who I am, you made me feel special." He held his cup tightly. "..and I love you for that."

Barth drank too. The juice was cool, and sweet, and he could taste the wood.
"I do know," Barth said, "...and- and it's rare. That kind of loyalty. That...that kind of friend. During the elections, when my booth exploded- my friends...left. You were...having a bit of a crisis, yourself, and we weren't..." he gestured between them, "But I can't- I can't do things alone, Calder. If the people I rely on leave when I need them...that's it, for me. And you are clever, and inventive, I'd know better than anyone. It's what I love most. You look...you're stunning. I need you."

The cup was tossed back, splashing into the water, as Calder wrapped his arms about the demon and held him tight. "That's all I ever wanted." As long as someone wanted him, needed him, he was happy. Right now, he was happier than he had ever been in some time, and he held tightly to Barth as if it would keep that moment in place and prolong the feeling of hearing it just now. "..as long as you need me, I'll be there for you I need you, too." He wanted, needed, and loved him, and the weight about his ankle was ignored entirely as he dotted the boil with nuzzles and kisses. .
