She stared at the other girl curiously for a long moment. "Perhaps, instead of thinking that way, you should believe that there must be something special about you because they were willing to let you join," she said quietly.

"I think there aren't very many of us, and we're expected to do something that can protect all of humanity from the monsters in this book. That alone shows that we're worth something. Or so I'd like to think."

She didn't understand this person. She really didn't. But Sydney thought for a moment before replying. "It does seem like we'll be doing a lot of fighting," she said. "Perhaps your ability to fight is one of the major factors in your getting in here. But I'm afraid I'll need to do some physical training before I take on close type fighting. My weapon is built for long distance fighting. He's a crossbow. Give me a few months to train before we spar?"

She closed the book, and stood. "I really should be going now," she said. "It was very... interesting talking to you."
