Ami actually felt a little bad when Otto called her condescending. She knew it was a bad trait of hers, and she was trying to work on it, really. Sometimes things just came out!

Her eyebrow arched when he asked her what book. Did he maybe like reading too? Even if he didn't, Ami liked reading and she never missed an opportunity to gush about how great a book was. "Ah- Till We have Faces," she responded, "It's a sort of ... retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth."

Now he had her babbling, "I mean I don't know much about Greek mythology, but I know C.S. Lewis is a genius when it comes to this sort of thing." Most people only knew him for the Narnia series, but C.S. Lewis was vastly more intelligent than biblical allusions. Gosh she could just talk forever.

< Yeah and it's boring. >

I'm not talking to you

Otto had never heard of that book, and he'd been meaning to find ways to get a hold of new books to read. "Lemme borrow it." He demanded suddenly. "I ain't know s**t about myths, but it beats readin the same few books I got over and over." While he didn't have a whole lot of downtime, he still had some, and what better way to ignore those around him than reading?

"Cafeteria's this way." Otto muttered, turning a corner toward the room with mingling hunters.

Ami stared at the boy with surprise. He wanted to read it? Didn't most teenage boys just like sitting around ... playing video games or something? If she recalled her high school days- which were, a mess- most of the boys in her classroom constantly talked about how much they HATED reading, and how they sparknoted everything.

< Hey! I like doing other stuff. Like swimming. Swimming's fun. Ami we should go swimming! >

Nobody cares.

< I care. >

She looked at Otto sort of suspiciously and, referring to the book, said, "Most certainly not. It's mine. Though I might let you borrow it. Maybe. Probably not.." Was she being a tad selfish? Maaaaybe. She just couldn't bring herself to trust a teenager with one of her precious books. Maybe if he actually presented himself somewhat nicely...

Entering the cafeteria, the sight she saw somewhat surprised her. It wasn't some weird high tech cafeteria with hovering trays and futuristic food, filled with strange people from all over the galaxy. It was actually rather simple, like ones in a college, though probably a bit nicer. There were cafeteria ladies and normal food. Ami was content to find that not EVERYTHING here seemed liked something out of a movie.

"So what'll it be blondie?" It seemed Otto's new nickname was sticking for her.

What? No? What gives! Otto scoffed, seeming rather put off at the refusal. Also, why did girls not like calling him by name? Puppy, Blondie, but never Otto. Did he care? He wasn't sure. Maybe, just a little bit.

"Get me a..." Otto trailed off, looking over his selections. "That. A3." The option looked to be some kind of baked good. A pound cake. Otto's favorite.

"Or else.." He looked at the girl with a narrowed gaze, mimicking the action of drumming to bring the point home.

Hey, to be fair, Otto never gave his damn name. So there.

Ami cringed a little at Otto's mimicry, and asked the lady at the counter for an "A3." After a few moments, someone came out with the food on the tray. She hadn't even looked at the menu to see what "A3" was until now. Didn't most boys his age like hamburgers and steak and what not? Growing boy mantra and all? Otto was turning out to be quite the surprise, though not in a bad way.

"Pound cake?" she said, sort of smiling and scoffing at the same time. "You like pound cake then ..." she echoed, taking the tray from the counter, looking for a place to sit.

Ami handed the tray to Otto and, gesturing to the tables, she said, "Go pick your seat. I'll join you in a second." She wanted to get something for herself now that she knew where the cafeteria was. Eventually she just picked out a teabag for later in her room. The cafeteria had a surprisingly diverse selection, and she was glad, but she wasn't particularly hungry at the moment. Nothing was worse than gross cafeteria food though. After purchasing her tea, Ami walked back into the table section of the cafeteria to look for her loud-mouthed ... acquaintance.

< Hey Ami what do you think of him? >

What do you mean?

< I dunno. He's kind of crampin' my style if you ask me. >

Good, because no one's asking you.

Pfft. Details.

"Yeah? So?" Otto scoffed, taking the tray without so much as a thank you, a scorned expression on his face while stomping off to get a table. He wanted cake, okay? He probably ate it more than a normal person. He chose it more than he did any other food. It was a good thing he trained a lot, or his skinny frame would be compromised.

He sat himself down, immediately starting to eat the cake. As Ami approached, Otto simply watched her look for him. He could help her, wave her down. But he didn't. He didn't care to at all. She got him the cake. He had what he wanted. If she found him, so be it, but he felt no obligation to further their interactions.

Ahh there he was with that grumpy expression on his face. Did that ever go away? Probably not. It was sort of an odd image, a grumpy teenage boy eating pound cake. Ha.

Sitting down at the table, Ami tore off a piece of his pound cake and said, "So are we okay? I mean, are you going to stop drumming?" Ami popped the tiny torn piece into her mouth with a smile. She stared at him with an expression that said "pretty please?" but in her mind she was just thinking "God let him say yes."

Damn. She found me.

The young man sneered as she took a peice of his treat, rolling his eyes at her 'sweet plea'. "Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Ya got my word. No more drumming... today" He said with a wave of his hand, taking another bite of his cake.

"An' don't think gettn' me cake everyday will make me quit altogether. This is just a one time deal. I drum on my days off." He warned with a finger pointed at her, his mouth half full of food.

"Hey!" she said with a hint of whine in her voice, "You definitely said if I bought you anything you wanted, you'd stop!" That was their deal! He was just being unfair now.

Then again, Ami couldn't really blame him. Even she knew that some people had their own way of relaxing, and the drums just happened to be his. She could understand that; that was fair.

But why oh WHY did he have to be in the dorm next to hers! "Auuugh okay, that's fair," she said, defeated. Couldn't stop a boy from doing what he wanted after all. "Is there any chance you could ah ... forewarn me somehow? So I could know when its coming?" That was probably too specific to ask- if she had to warn someone every time she read a book, she'd probably drive the person insane.

He reminds me of someone, she thought mindless.

< Who? >

I don't know ... I can't think of it.

< Maybe someone in your past? >

Well obviously. I can't see people in my future.

< Is it me? >

Definitely not.

Shaking her head, Ami decided to focus on the boy in front of her, instead of the imaginary one she kept trying to remember. Best to just treat Otto like his own person after all.

She was daft if she believed he'd stop forever. He went to great lengths to smuggle the set into Dues. It was his ultimate method of expression. Something just training didn't do for him. Even after being there for so long, fighting still wasn't something he was good at, so what better way to vent than hit drums with sticks?

"Isn't the banging enough warning?" He knew the answer to that, though. Otto huffed and rolled his eyes. "Fiiiiine. I'll knock on yer door, or maybe the wall a few times so ya know. Maybe. If I remember." He shrugged, taking another big bite or two of the cake loaf.

"Fair enough Blondie," she said with a wayward sort of smile. It seemed that for all his grumpiness, he had some nice in there SOMEWHERE. She could work with that.

Standing up, Ami ruffled the boys hair and said, "Enjoy the cake. I'll see you around." With that, she gave a strange sort of salute and left the boy in peace.

< He was a jerk. >

Maybe, but he did say he'll warn me. That's nice right?

< No, he was a jerk. You really think he's going to stop? >

Nope. I'll just have to go to the library when he starts drumming~

< Oh Jack, Ami. Anything but that. >

Otto griped a bit at the hair ruffling, but was much too preoccupied to swat her hand away. "Yeah yeah, see ya.." He muttered, munching on the cake and waving her off.

She left, he ate cake. When he returned to his room, he was kind enough to stay off the drums the rest of the night.

Be thankful.
