Looking around frantically, he smelled the faint scent of his mate, and then it was gone again. No. No no. Hugin?!

And so he searched again. His heart hammered and he feared that the monsters of the forest would hear it. Suddenly this place was frightening. This was the place that had stolen his love and hidden him away. Devoured him. This place was frightening.

Yet as he searched he felt as if he could find Hugin, he just needed to find a clue. He just... needed to grasp ahold of something. Then the sounds of birds, violent caws that were not natural. Birds that seemed to crave death. Vultures. That was when his heart nearly stopped, and his legs went faster then had ever thought possible. When he found the purple figure his voice came out in a frightened screech, paws hurriedly touching and pulling, hoping to the deities he'd wake. Hoping he was alive.

Hugin was still in a battle for his life, clinging with all his might to the last, flickering bit of light that stood between him and the crushing darkness. All his senses had narrowed down to that single battle; he didn't even hear the birds as they circled overhead, voicing their calls and making sure their potential prey wasn't simply napping.

A distant sound reached his ears, a soft echo like it had come from the very depths of the earth. It only registered with Hugin because its source was the very reason he still fought, why he was still here. Weak as he was though, Hugin believed the sound to be only in his mind.

Even when warm paws touched his body he didn't feel them. He was past feeling anything, not when it was taking everything just to cling to life.

((I might have to do a time skip in my next post, after you reply; Hugin's gonna be a little out of it for at least a day or two.))

His mate was alive, that was certain. Pulling him closer, he smoothed his fur as he thought. Hugin looked weak, and tired. He'd need to hunt, and now. Grabbing his mate, he wiggled his body under him and lifted Hugin onto his back. He carried him towards the small cave he had spotted before, slowly lowering Hugin. It didn't take long to secure the entrance and pad off. Nor did it take long for him to return with kill. Burying the kill near the cave, he slipped back inside and pressed against his mate, sharing his warmth.

"Hugin." His voice was tense and worried, pressing into Hugin slightly. Perhaps he should try and gather some herbs, but currently he didn't want to leave his mate behind. He'd get up in a hour or so, but not until then.

Hugin's body began to shudder, wracked with convulsions as though he had only just begun to feel the cold that settled into his limbs. He flinched away from the cold air, feeling relief on one side and subconsciously trying to get as close to the warmth as he could.

The shuddering began again when the warmth suddenly left him, and he cried out. This happened a lot. Sometimes the warmth immediately came back to him, and sometimes it was gone for longer. It always seemed like an eternity to him as he floated alone in the darkness.

Awareness came back slowly to Hugin. He could not have said how long, for time had no meaning in this helpless darkness. Smell was the first sense to come back, along with taste. Meat and the bitter tang of herbs, the fresh scent of water, and something familiar. He always felt better when he could smell that familiar something.

Touch next. The warmth began to define itself as a body laying beside him, the gentle touch of cool water washing away the blood that streaked down his face.

Finally sound. Most of it was something of a blur to him, the meaningless echo of stone, the chatter of birds, the rustling of small creatures in the mast on the ground. And a voice, always a single voice gently murming to him. Hugin liked the voice, it made him feel calm and peaceful. Something about it teased the back of him mind, like there was something important he had to remember, but he never could seem to hold onto the words before the darkness tugged him away.

How much time had passed, before Hugin finally came awake?

The voice was speaking when it happened. The darkness had been growing thinner and thinner for days. Sometimes Hugin was almost lucid, but it perhaps out of sheer spite the darkness refused to let him be. Then, all of a sudden, it was gone, and Hugin could remember.

"Vetis," he breathed softly.

He wasn't sure if he had given up hope or not, he was beyond thought. Worry had blanked his mind, eating away at any rational thought that tried to dismiss it. Instead, his mind was a mass of blurs, and he was left with the feeling of dread and worry. Hugin was not responding, and yet he was alive. At times he wondered if the other would never wake up, he wasn't sure if he'd simply rot away beside Hugin if that was the case, or rot away somewhere else. Either way, he was sure he'd die.

Then a voice.

He didn't move much, staying completely still. It wasn't like he was worried of scaring Hugin, it was more that he couldn't move. Just as quickly as he admitted that fact he suddenly had to fight back the urge to rush at Hugin, that could not end in anything but pain for his mate. So, he settled for simply laying down on his stomach, head resting onto his paws, nearly touching his mates own paw.

"I'm here."

Hugin's eyes fluttered open. It probably didn't help his appearance. He had to look half-dead already, with injuries and lost weight. Adding the stare of his blank, lifeless eyes...

There wasn't much point to it either, so why did he do it? Symbolism, perhaps. Most people described waking up as opening their eyes and sitting up. His body felt too heavy to sit, so all he could do was open his eyes.

Hugin groaned as all his injuries rushed to make themselves known, and had to fight the urge to flinch and curl in on himself; that would have only made the pain worse.

He tried forcing it back, ignoring in, focusing on breathing in soft, short breaths to take his mind away from pain.

"I feel....like the earth....decided to.....step...on me," he managed, letting out an almost inaudible, breathy laugh.

He wanted to apologize. He should never have let Hugin go alone, he knew something horrid was going to happen. He knew something bad was going to occur, but Hugin had reassured him. He hadn't wanted his mate feeling like Vetis saw him as incompetent. He hadn't wanted Hugin thinking Vetis viewed him as weak. Now? He rather he took his chances and followed.

His mate had opened his eyes, causing a dry laugh to escape his throat. Even now he was trying for Vetis. He barely heard Hugin as he spoke, squirming just a bit closer, licking Hugin's cheek.

"I can take you to a lake so you can rest in cold water." Vetis whispered, it was clear he was worried, and not only that, felt guilty. He would rip the earth apart if it would help. His fury was twitching and hissing, though he had nothing to take it out on. There was nothing to blame. Other than himself, but he didn't dare take it out on himself. He knew Hugin would not take that well.

The muscles in Hugin's neck twitched like he wanted to move, but he couldn't lift his head; it took everything he had just to talk!

"Hurts-," he repeated in that broken, raspy voice, "-...but cold. So...cold." His whole body twitch and Hugin gasped in pain again. He knew he needed to get up and move around, soon, before his muscles wasted away or he hurt himself by laying in one place for too long. Stretching would probably hurt, but in the end it would have done him good.

But right now, his muscles just felt too stiff with the cold to even move at all.

Hugin managed another breathy chuckle. "Would rather....you let me...rest...in hot water.....than cold. Volcano....would be nice."

He didn't know of any hot areas. He did know of hot springs, but Vetis was not going to drag his mate all the way over mountains and many miles for that. No. All he could do for warmth was pull his mate until a den under ground.

He would need to dig one.

"I can dig us a den that is warm." He was going to overwork himself to death. He didn't care. He wanted Hugin safe. This was, in his mind, entirely his fault and always would be.

"And make a fire." He added. His sparkles were getting everywhere as his agitation rose. Ugh. Sparkles.

Hugin felt the first stirrings of distress. He cursed his weakened state, which dulled his senses. He couldn't move to touch his mate properly, his numbed body and sluggish mind making sounds and touch difficult to process in his normal way.

He was going to have to make inquiries to confirm his suspcions. His distress increased a little at the thought. Vetis would never simply brush him off, but if he thought he was doing something for Hugin's own good he became stubborn beyond all reason.

That trait was only likely to have worsened after this incident.

"How long have I been....asleep," Hugin asked, briefly pausing as he tried to find a word for the state he'd been in previous.

Vetis paused in his worries enough to respond, thinking over. He hadn't really thought of time. He had been focused on performing his duties and struggling to control his rage and fear for his mates sake. When Hugin had finally awaken he hadn't even considered the fact that he had been here for days. However, now he flipped through his memory. How many suns rose and set? Ah. It hadn't been as long as he felt.

"Two days." Vetis responded, ears flicking backwards. Two days and the male had hardly moved or eaten that much. He would be weak, another thing pounding into Vetis' increasing guilt. His ears stayed pinned backwards, but his voice remained calm.

"What would you like before I make somewhere warmer?" The cave, while offering good shelter, was not holding heat well. Now that he could leave his mates side, briefly, he wished to make somewhere better for recovering.

"Eat.....and drink," Hugin said, trying hit utmost to inject firmness into his whisper of a voice. "Before...anything else."

Part of him hated himself for what he was going to say next. Hugin knew how much influence he could have over Vetis if he chose to to play the manipulation game. He hated it, no matter how big or small the manipulation seemed, hated having to play on Vetis' feelings for him. But if it got Vetis to take care of himself, Hugin would do it.

"Won't....eat or drink....until....you do," he said, voice still as firm as he could manage.

It wasn't an idle threat, he meant it.

He froze, head turning to stare at Hugin, whether he could see it or not. He, as well, hated this. Hugin knew what he was doing. Vetis would never risk his mate, even before when they were friends. Not only this, Vetis knew Hugin was telling the truth, a real threat. He was so simple, so easily manipulated into doing as the other decided, but Hugin did not abuse this. Vetis was a simple man. He loved Hugin. He would do anything for Hugin. He would sacrifice everything just to see that small smile.

Still, this was all too cruel. He had to care for himself first, and this hurt. He wanted Hugin nourished first. Still... He.... the quicker he ate the quicker the other did.

"As you wish." He responded carefully with, viewing his mate briefly. When was the last time he had eaten, anyway? With this simple phrase, he left the cave, moving brushes and branches in-front of the cave to protect his mate from outsiders and the wind, and headed for a lake and to find something small to grab.
PostPosted: Mon Oct 15, 2012 5:42 pm

Hugin felt his throat constrict with emotion at the careful and controlled tone of his mate's voice. He didn't trust himself to speak and stayed quiet until he heard the sound of Vetis' footsteps leaving the cave.

Then he cried, real tears leaking from those pale orbs to mingle with the blood. He couldn't take it back, wouldn't even if he'd had to, but he still hated himself for having to do that to Vetis. He tried to list logical reasons for it, that Vetis was going to be weak from hunger and thirst, and that if he fell ill they'd both die, that he wasn't hungry and probably shouldn't eat until he was warm anyway.

All were perfectly sound, valid reasons, but they did nothing to ease the guilt nor erase the knowledge that he had done it simply because he himself could not stand to have his mate in discomfort even as he was lying half-dead on the forest floor.

Hugin let the tears flow for a minute then quickly suppressed them, trying to keep the signs of his distress hidden from Vetis.

Vetis headed for a lake, ears flat against his head. He understood why Hugin had forced him. Of course he did. Perhaps he would have done the same thing, but, no... Vetis was stronger. He would have lifted Hugin to food and water. Either way... he actually wasn't sure what he'd do, to be honest. Still, he knew Hugin's logic. He simply didn't like it. He didn't like how the male risked his own life for him, even though Vetis would do so in a second and had. He was hypocritical, always had been. Always would be. It was okay for Vetis to risk his life for Hugin.

It wasn't for Hugin to do so for Vetis.

Still, he listened. He always did, he always would, for he was a fool in love. It didn't take long to lap up water, remembering it's location for later as he swiftly snapped off to the right to find something killable. He grabbed the closest berries he could, carefully examining them to make sure they were not poisonous. He could feed them to Hugin in a second. After he ate...

He considered stuffing berries in his face, but Hugin would smell it and know he had lazily attempted to follow his rules. So, swiftly he murdered a rabbit and consumed it, grabbing a few birds (after awkward leaps and bounds, for he was rather large...) and headed for the cave.
