Jerry's suggestion to spread out didn't sit right with Harrison. It was only the three of them. But Jerry didn't have to worry about his teammates, either.

Some kinda symbol. While Jordan was in the bedroom, Harrison summoned B0nez and split the back of the couch. It hung open like a tent flap, and inside...

Harrison hid his mouth and nose in the crook of his elbow.

The worms crawl in, the worms crawl out, B0nez hummed.

He was looking pale as Jordan wandered back in to cut back the carpet. The ripping noise was louder than he'd expected, peeling it up to show layers and layers of bugs, wriggling all over each other, so thick it almost looked like porridge. The couch looked like that too.

They're all over.

"I'm...I gotta go outside," he said, and walked stiff-legged out to the porch to grip the railing for support and be loudly sick in the grass.

The floor creaked and groaned as Jerry made his way back into the livingroom to investigate what the others had found, feeling a bit better about all of this with his personal find. "What's all ov-" He stopped short at the sight of what Jordan had found, let alone the squirming, fluttering mess escaping from the couch.

His face went green as Harrison whisked by him.

"Oh. Oh g-g-god... ew. Ah." He cleared his throat, swallowing bile. "That's... er... something. Um." Another swallow and he tried not to look directly into it. "Do... do you think... the b-b-bugs... ate them?"

Jordan dropped the flap of carpet back over the crawling mass, grimacing. He tried not to listen to the sounds from outside; he'd managed to keep his gut under control at the sight of the termites, but if he paid too much attention when someone else was throwing up, he'd lose it himself. As calmly as he could, if slightly too loud, he said, "No, if the bugs had eaten them there'd have been mention of it. That would be unusual enough to attract notice. I suspect that if they had, there wouldn't have been bodies left to find, anyway."

Maybe the bodies looked fine but were full of bugs, like the couch, Ferros suggested, tone thoughtful.

Jordan swallowed hard to quiet the nausea that rose in his throat at that thought. "I doubt it, but thanks so much for that thought." The noises from the porch had quieted; he went to the door. "You okay?" he asked Harrison. "I think I've got some gum ... "

"Y-yeah," came the weak response, "gum'll help."

It was difficult to tell whether or not he was being sarcastic.

He'd treat it as a serious response, anyway. Jordan checked his pockets and found the packet. "Heads up," he said, and flipped it towards Harrison. It'd get rid of the taste of bile, at least.

Harrison fumbled with it, even though he had his own, and unwrapped a stick. He chewed on it determinedly.

"I don't get like that about gore," Harrison said, embarrassed, "It's just they had all them bugs in their floor and wall and furniture and everywhere, and they...they probably didn't even know. They were sleeping, and- s**t, this is stupid." he shook his head, and steeled up, looking back at the house.

"We better see if there are any more of those weird spirals, or marks anywhere the bugs haven't got to. Maybe...take a few back. Find a jar in the kitchen or something. In case they ain't normal."

He took a second stick of gum, then handed the pack back to Jordan, before ducking under the tape.

"I'm not an idiot, either." He added a mumbled, "Just seem to get that way whenever you're around."

"Gives me the creeps too. All those bugs in the furniture ... " Jordan paused as a thought occurred to him. Probably bugs in the beds, even. The thought made his skin crawl, and he resisted the urge to check and make sure there were no bugs on him. He shook his head. "I wonder if it was like that when they were still living here, or if the termites have multiplied since the deaths."

"Good idea," he agreed, and followed Harrison back inside. At the last comment, he paused, flushing slightly. It hadn't been meant that way. "I didn't think you were," he answered, as quietly. "Not your fault weird s**t happens."

He headed down the hall again. "I'll check the other rooms down here. If there's any bedrooms upstairs, check under the beds - that's where the spiral thing was down here." There was nothing new in any of the other downstairs rooms, though; another spiral under the bed in what looked like the guest room, and termites everywhere, just under the surface.

He took a moment to tug the corner of the sheet off the bed in the guest room, and dropped it hastily when he found that his guess had been correct. Bugs squirming in and out of the mattress, the barely-audible rustling everywhere. How had the inhabitants of the house been able to live here? How could they have slept in these beds?

"Weird s**t," Harrison laughed. "That about sums it up."

He headed upstairs. The gum did help. He checked the floors and walls, turning over knick knacks and paying special attention to door frames. He dragged a chair over to examine the tops of a fan. Anywhere someone might have carved something. When he found bugs, he didn't look at them too long. All the wood was too chewed up to find symbols in.

"No marks," he confirmed, "least not where I can see. ...Under the beds, you said?" He tread lightly going back down the stairs.

"There... was some... empty bottles in the kitchen..." Jerry offered weakly, wandering about as they discussed their findings. This was... disgusting. Very disgusting. Ugg.... He wasn't phobic about Bugs, not like... other things. But that didn't make them any less nasty on masse.

Letting the other two check the upstairs, he called after warily, "Be careful! You don't want to fall through if it's all... ugg... rotted!"

Alright. Back into the kitchen, and the now-empty bottle of southern comfort he had left in the cabinet. It had a screw on cap at least. Right. Ok. Just... ok, maybe a spoon or something too... a few drawers and he located a ladle and a funnel.

He meekly made his way back to where Jordan had already started to rip up the floor board, and indeed, it was still swarming with fresh grubs and older termites. Between the ladle and the funnel and holding his breath and trying to not watch what he was doing, he managed to fill the bottle at least half way with creeping crawling things. Before they cold escape, the tossed in an extra hunk of wood so they'd have something to eat besides each other, and capped it quickly.

"Uh. You think... uh. That's enough?"

"Yeah, I found two of the markings, both the same. Under the beds," Jordan said, returning to the living room. He took a brief look at the bottle of bugs, then looked away swiftly. "I think that's plenty. Thanks, man." He really hadn't particularly wanted to be the one scooping bugs into a jar.

One more look around the living room, and Jordan turned back to the other two. "Anywhere else you guys can think of to check? I think between the three of us we've pretty much gotten the house covered. Findings: bugs everywhere, strange markings under the beds, absolutely terrible taste in interior decorating, though that last probably isn't dangerous. Much, anyway."

Harrison had an easier time with the small pile of bugs in a jar than he did with...the other. He rubbed his jaw. "Hey, Jordan. Could you show us the spiral-things before we hit the road? Y'know. For corroboration."
PostPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 8:24 pm

"Sure, yeah." Jordan led the way back to the bedroom that he guessed had been the farmer's and pulled up the edge of the blanket, shining his flashlight under the bed to illuminate the odd spiraling symbol. "The other one's in the room at the end of the hall. Guest room, I think. As far as I can tell, they're exactly the same."

Harrison crouched, squinting at the mark. He could hear skittering in the mattress, and focused on chewing gum.

"You got a good eye," he said, "Dunno if it means anything, though. Kids are always markin up stuff." The symbol wasn't complicated. He took out his phone, and snapped a picture, just in case.

He stood, and brushed the dirt off his knees.

"Sooner we're out of here the better. Think I would have preferred ghosts."

Jerry had fallen behind as the other two moved back to the bedroom, his hands shaking as he slipped the bug-filled bottle into his coat pocket. Once he knew they were out of sight, he had taken a quick pull from his newly found flask.

They were almost done. It was a good, quiet mission.

He was looking more confident as he joined them, crouching down to investigate as well. "It looks kind of like.... you know. Like gypsies making those evil-eye symbols. Kinda. I mean. Different obviously but. If you know what I mean? We should have brought a camera. What about our cell phones? Anyone want to take a picture?"

"It might be nothing, but better to have something irrelevant than to miss something important, right?" Jordan dropped the corner of the blanket and turned to give Jerry a faintly puzzled glance. "Harrison just got a picture with his phone. Did you find something else back there?"

Something was a little off, but he couldn't pin down what. Was he imagining things?
