"It's an amazing challenge. I love it. I think she was trying to punish me but damn." She was grinning, shaking her head and looking up at the ceiling as she let out a dreamy sigh. This was going to be great. She would pass all the courses, get her promotion back, and make her leader damn pleased. And Candace would be able to feel proud of herself again for the first time in a long time without the influence of JOY. She needed this.

Jordan had a point. If Julie was the moon assistant...what..what was the leader like? "...Maybe it's like a reverse Clarice and H? You have H who is ******** crazy, he's the Julie, and then you have Clarice who is serious and efficient." She paused a moment to snicker and then laugh. She just compared H to Julie! Ahaha! Oh god! She'd actually be afraid if she saw H acting like a sugary sweet Julie or Julie acting like a perverted lech with the libido that matched her own! That..that would be damn frightening.

She'd hate to see Julie trying to get laid...again..?

"Yeah he was telling me about it. I mean, everyone on this island has some kind of baggage full of issues. But his need serious attention. I adore him but...I can't help him with what he's got going in his head. Hm? Advice?" Candace seemed to light up at that. "You told him to get help? I'm glad. He seems to be getting better. He lets us sleep with a lamp or two now instead of a brightly lit room." She was smiling, glad to hear that she wasn't the only one trying to get Jerry to work on his issues. She was so glad she and Jordan were on the same page here. At the mention of being a hypocrite she fell quiet again, scratching at her cheek and looking away. Right...being a hypocrite. Jerry was hiding something from her and she was mad...heh. If he knew what she was hiding from him he would be pissed.

"The fact that you can acknowledge it's something you do that's bad is a step in the right direction, Jordan." Candace said with a gentle, assuring pat against his back. She kept her hand there, unsure of what to do next. "I think everyone on this island is a hypocrite in some fashion...it's a small island, tensions get high...hopefully one day we'll get some time to just relax, hm? With no presents coming to life and biting us. And no snowmen trying to eliminate us. Oooh! Maybe on Easter we'll get to see bunnies~!"
PostPosted: Mon Jan 30, 2012 11:18 am

"That backfired, didn't it," Jordan said dryly, but he was smiling.

"Let's hope so, anyway. If it's like that, we can expect the Moon leader to be frighteningly efficient, I'd guess." That wouldn't be a bad thing, unless they were a sadist, which possibility he wasn't discounting, given that two out of three division heads currently in residence were less than reassuring. Comparing Dr. H and Julie ... the thought gave him pause as his mind produced a mental image of some kind of combination of the two.

That's disturbing, Ferros said.

When YOU'RE telling me something is disturbing, I know I don't want to think about it too hard.

"He checked out during a spar, and I had to grab Roar to push him out of the way before I could get his attention." Jordan shook his head. "While his aim improved by a mile, he wasn't in control. He hadn't actually realized what was going on. I asked him to get help - he could've really hurt himself or someone else, and it worried me that he needed to dissociate to deal with fighting. I'm glad he's getting better." He huffed a sigh.

"Pretty sure we've all got problems of one kind or another." Jordan startled slightly at the hand on his back, shooting a quick glance at Candace but not protesting. "As long as the coping mechanisms don't get too weird or self-destructive, I suppose it's all right." He laughed. "Bunnies - well, as long as they're not like the all-teeth ones in the petting zoo, that might be nice."

During a spar...damn. Candace bit nervously on the end of her thumb and stared ahead of her. That was dangerous. He didn't know he did it, and he was a better fighter during it...that..that was so dangerous. "He did it a lot during that mission at the haunted house, too. At the time I didn't think it was a big deal, you know? It was kind of hot, even. But...but now...I think he just goes to his 'happy place' when he fights. To deal with the stress. But that way isn't safe. I hope he can get out of that." She was genuinely concerned. She didn't want him to hurt himself or anyone else on their side. Someone who wasn't actually focusing was a danger not only to those around them but to themselves. What if he did it too often in battle? And then one wrong move and...a creature could...?! She bit harder on her thumb, her leg starting to bounce the more she thought about it. He was already reckless without that bad habit.

"Yeah, self-destructive..." She moved her hand from her mouth and rubbed the back of her neck. It was starting to ache from stress and lack of a good tension relief. Was there an on-site masseuse on this island by any chance? Probably not. She was amazed there was a therapist.

"Some cuddly, fluffy bunnies would do. Oh, but Jerry...what do they do on passover? Jewish holidays don't have cute little commercialism mascots~." But with their luck the bunny would be like the white rabbit from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

"Yeah." Jordan sighed. "He's scarily effective while dissociated, but it'll be much better when he can use that ability consciously. Personally, I think he'd be happier in Moon division, but it's not my decision." A faint quirk of a smile. "He just doesn't seem as enthusiastic about fighting as we are." He tapped his thumb against his ring to indicate who he meant by we.

"I'm just not sure I'd trust the cuddly bunnies not to be bloodthirsty vampiric things, given how holidays have gone so far," he said. "Passover ... maybe an adorable little lamb?" He grinned.

Candace nodded in agreement. He was very effective when he was like that. "..You think so?" Candace looked down at her rings, rubbing circles around one of them with her thumb. She could hear Atropos purr contently as she did that and she smiled fondly, "He's...very good at it, though. I..I don't think he should be in Moon, personally. He already recklessly throws himself in front of attacks on me I'd hate to see what he does when it's his duty to defend and take hits." Maybe something safe, like Life! He could be in Life with the labs and the specimens and the inventing and...and away from the battles. But Jordan was right about it not being up to them. It was all Jerry's decision, and it wasn't their place to tell him what to do. Especially with him being older than both of them.

At the reminder that their bunny could easily be a vampire she frowned, pouting her lips childishly and turning a glare toward Jordan. "Don't you ruin bunnies for me." She told him seriously, though she knew this kind of topic wasn't really one could take seriously. But a lamb? That would be precious. "...Maybe I'll celebrate passover this year instead of Easter. For him." She swayed a little, humming thoughtfully. "It'd make him happy if we didn't make him feel left out again, hm? Lambs are less likely to be vampires anyway."

...What the hell kind of logic is that? Candace smiled and flicked one of her rings.

"Hush you, it makes perfect sense." She gave the ring a little rub in apology after hitting it.

"You have a point," Jordan admitted. I wish he'd be more careful - and that was sliding over into dangerous territory again; better to keep it more neutral. "Guess we've all got a bit of everything, even if it's not what we're formally assigned to," he said instead.

"All right," he said, mock-seriously. "I won't make any disparaging comments about bunnies. They're safe. At least, I hope they're safe." He paused, a thought occurring to him. "I wonder if there's a physical manifestation of Easter? Commercialized Easter, at least? Hm - for that matter, why do you think it is that the holidays we've had evidence of are so heavily focused on the generic and iconic secular imagery, rather than the religious? Given that it's human mental and emotional energies that fuel them, you'd think that the collective unconscious would tap more heavily into religious imagery. Or maybe it's just that what we've seen is a more recent iteration. Holidays might have been darker places in the past ... "

Then he shook his head. "Sorry about the tangent. Just thinking out loud. Passover, hm? I'm - I was Catholic. Guess I've got to say I'm lapsed these days. More like agnostic. Keeping faith in the face of all that's been thrown at us must be difficult."

"Awww, cute. Trying to be a Mist hunter~?" Candace teased with a grin, sighing and ruffling her hair after. Jerry did a very good job of protecting her..sometimes too good of a job. "We'll just have to make it so he doesn't need to risk his life for us like that..." If only he'd let her return the favor every now and then.

As Jordan brought up the different holiday manifestations she hummed and leaned forward, her elbows on her knees and her head in her hands. "Perhaps the old religious manifestations exist..they're just old? I mean, we only ever go to the same school right now. We're seeing what they consider to be their children, their young. And considering more people are probably afraid their twitter will crash than their soul won't make it to heaven I'm not surprised that all we see is generic and iconic. For example, the four horsemen. We've seen the actual Conquest. So they exist, just not in that school setting?" It would make sense, really. Uncultured generations could only fear so much...

"Oh, pff. Don't apologize. I love discussing theories. Picking apart a person's brain and figuring out what makes them tick is like a pass time for me." Candace admitted with a grin, though she nodded in agreement with Jordan. She really didn't practice any religion; as a child her parents had made her go to church but she started spending all her time working on getting into law school and then staying in law school after awhile. "But he really wanted to celebrate Hanukkah and because of the JOY we kind of trampled all over it...it's nice to have a bit of familiarity every now and then, and major holidays are definitely a comfort."
PostPosted: Sat Feb 04, 2012 10:34 pm

"Nah, that sounds like work," Jordan teased back. He wasn't actually averse to working at things; he liked to be thorough and get things right, and Candace had probably figured that out by now. More seriously, he said, "Yeah, we can do that. I wouldn't feel right if I didn't try."

"That makes sense to me," he said thoughtfully. "Religion itself has gotten considerably more generic in the modern age. We do see demons there, of all different kinds; they must have mythological roots in hellfire and damnation, or other cultural equivalents of Hell." He laced his fingers together as he considered. "Conquest looks to be not just an individual, but a hereditary position as well," he pointed out. "I wonder how many of the iconic figures are like that? Come to think of it, I wonder if it would work that way in the other holidays. Halloween is one of the few that doesn't have a mascot or central figure to revolve around, like, say, Santa or the Easter Bunny." He paused, another point occurring to him. "Given the assumption that a holiday world contains considerably more than we've seen, it might be possible that tangentially related holidays are connected or coexistent. Easter and Passover could be connected, or one could contain the other."

He smiled. "Can you tell I was in academia when Deus Ex contacted me?"

He nodded to her point. "Ritual and familiarity are a good touchstone in a chaotic world. I'd bet something could be arranged, at least."

Candace let Jordan speak, just sitting and watching him with a surprisingly fond smile. This was a side of Jordan she had yet to see! Intriguing, thoughtful and..now she actually saw what people liked about him. He wasn't a sheep who just thought he could get things done, he was a mature man who had actual thoughts. And good ones, too! Now she really wanted to get to know him, whereas before she merely felt it best to simply be civil for the sake of civility and getting s**t done. She wanted to see inside his head. "...So is Thanksgiving a Pilgrim Turkey with a shotgun, then?" If they were naming the Easter Bunny as an 'Easter World' god the way Santa Claus essentially was to Christmas, then the same logic had to apply to all the other iconic holidays. "You know...thinking that way." She tilted her head to one side and frowned. "Humans create these worlds. They're our creation~. A shame one of them has to be so...volatile. I wish it as as easy to fix them as it was to make them. It'd make our jobs a whole lot easier, hm? Imagine if we could just..think up a solution?" She chuckled and shook her head. It would never be that easy.

"I was about to graduate from law school myself." Candace didn't sound sad about that for once. Last year? Oh, would she have ever. She would have even cried a little. But now it was just...fact, and not even an unhappy or bitter fact anymore. She was happy with her new life.

But even if she was happy with it didn't mean she didn't like a bit of 'normalcy' every now and then. "It's good for keeping a bit of sanity, too. So we don't feel so disconnected from the world we have to protect now..."
PostPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:43 pm

Jordan laughed. "You never know. It might be. Kind of a scary thought, if you think about it; makes me think of a terrible B-movie. Revenge of the Thanksgiving Turkey or some such. Thanksgiving is a very North American holiday, though. If it's got a physical manifestation, maybe it's a subset of harvest festival icons? Then again, you don't really get the iconic imagery for harvest festivals elsewhere," he mused. "Either that, or I'm doing the iggerant 'merican thing. Also possible. It'd be a subject for further research, if I had the time and leisure. Probably won't happen, though." He sighed. "That's one thing I do regret - not being able to continue my education."

He gave Candace a thoughtful look. "While those worlds are human creations," he said, "they seem to be creations of the subconscious and emotion rather than any organized imaginings. Instinctive reactions that are out of our control, unfortunately. Which would explain why they exist, maybe," he continued, frowning as he considered it. "If we're afraid, somewhere out there, there must be something to be afraid of. Recursive logic, but compelling in its own way. Lizard-brain thoughts. It would be nice if we could conquer with the power of love," he grinned, putting a light sarcastic emphasis on the last phrase.

"Huh. A lawyer?" That explained her way with words, if not her straightforward bluntness; but coming here had changed them all. Mostly for the better, he thought, though he had only second-hand knowledge of his friends' pasts.

"Being able to get off the island sometimes helps with that too. Bringing a bit of normalcy back here to remind us what's out there. I guess that really is part of why everyone went so nuts about Christmas, other than - er - strange chemical influences."

"I bet a movie like that exists. They say if you can think of it? Someone else has done it already. But even so, the whole world doesn't celebrate the general 'Halloween' the way we do here...so it should be safe to assume there's a place for everything, you kn--" She stopped to stare at Jordan as he commented on the 'iggerant 'merican' thing. Oh man. "Y'ain't got no learnin'?" Candace asked in a Southern drawl that sounded all too natural. But that was all she would allow herself to do, clearing her throat and smiling again. She was quiet as she allowed herself to get out of that..'mode'. Concentrate on no accent. Do it.

..The power of love. Candace laughed at the emphasis Jordan put on it, nudging him playfully with her elbow. "Jordan the magical girl of love and peace~!" She teased, sighing contently after and nodding at his question. "I was among top in my class, too." It was how she operated; Candace had to be one of the best.

"Getting off the island is great. Though as I told the last person I discussed this with...I'm happy being a hunter. To get rid of the material worries I had before, to have this new purpose? This is one of the best choices I've ever made, I think." She was smiling again. "Strange chemical influences aside, yes~. I'm sure when we're full-fledged hunters cabin fever will be easier to handle." This was nice, talking to Jordan on a more friendly level as opposed to a professional 'coworker' level. This could work. They could do this. She didn't have to feel uncomfortable around him.
PostPosted: Sun Feb 19, 2012 9:31 pm

"Oh, probably - hah!" Jordan laughed as Candace dropped into an excellent Southern drawl. Either she'd been Southern or she had a good ear for imitation. He really couldn't tell.

"That's kind of a terrifying concept," he said. "I don't think a short skirt would suit me very well, regardless of how secure I may be in my masculinity." He nodded to her statement. "I can believe it. I was generally in the top ten percent, but I never tried for higher, particularly. Too much attention when you got too good at something, and I didn't want to be noticed."

"I think I would've been all right teaching," he mused. "But being here, having a real purpose and being able to fight back against the things that I hid from ... this is better. It's stressful and dangerous and cuts way down on the life expectancy - but at least I'll have been doing something."

"A leotard with no short skirt is worse than just having the skirt, Jordan." Candace was grinning, feeling more and more comfortable around Jordan with every teasing remark. He wasn't snapping at her or getting grumpy about it! This was great! She didn't have to worry she was hurting his feelings or going too far. "I like being noticed." If that wasn't obvious enough already. Candace didn't seem to realize just how many eyes were on her.

Life expectancy.. "Yeah...I realized recently I'm happy here, despite everything. I have something to focus on, something worthwhile that doesn't make someone else's life miserable, you know?" She'd seen the life expectancy in the graveyard. But there were people here who had to have been here a long time. H? Caelius? Clarice? Aria? How long had they all been here? H himself seemed to be the oldest of all four of them and he was doing just fine; she'd never seen the man weakened or even banged up as they had all seen Caelius. "Maybe one day I won't have to check my closet or under my bed for monsters." She chuckled, her cheeks flushing a faint pinkish color as she admitted an embarrassing childhood secret that just...had yet to go away.
PostPosted: Tue Mar 13, 2012 6:57 am

"I guess I can't argue that one," Jordan conceded. "Not my style either way." He chuckled and commented, "You do it with flair."

His smile softened a little at the mention of monsters in the closet and under the bed; the reminder brought up just as many childhood memories for him. There'd been something under Andy's bed, something in his closet. "One of these days, maybe we'll get to go take care of that for some kid," he said. "Let them sleep easier."

Candace gave Jordan a thumbs up at his comment. "Damn right I do." And she was oh so modest about it, too.

The cocky attitude dropped when Jordan spoke of letting kids sleep easier, her smile softening as she nodded and brought her legs up so her feet were propped up against the edge of the bed. "That'd be nice. One day, for sure~. Stop those things from plaguing people with their presence..." Candace hugged her legs and rest her head on her knees, keeping it turned so she could look Jordan's way.

"I'm glad we had this talk, by the way." She could finally feel a little more comfortable around Jordan without having to remind herself she'd nearly killed him. It seemed like he was finally warming up to her a little more, too.
