Journal #1 Telgar Weyr was a frightening place to a fresh young Candidate. From above it had been deceptively small- and deceptively beautiful. On closer inspection, there was an awful lot of rock. She'd been told the Weyr could hold 400 dragons, and that there were three Holds. She had asked many, many questions of her Searchrider, and he had been friendly enough at the time. Everything had changed, however, when she was back at Telgar. She had been dropped in the care of total strangers, her friendly dragonrider going off to his work and leaving the girl behind. To think- she had almost liked him, too.
Her first day she had been permitted to settle in, so she had wandered around in plain sight of the Weyr, and only to places she thought she may be able to get back. Another Candidate had eventually shown her the way to the Dragon's Foot Springs, and then a few of the more important-to-know tunnels. It was like living in a maze, really, with so many hallways, and so much... rock. She didn't regret her decision, Jadamirei decided. It had been hastily made, but there was no regret. If she tucked her tail and ran back home because she was intimidated, everyone would make fun of her. And besides- there were other Harpers here, including one who was living her dream: Weyrsinger M'dor was a dragonrider and a Harper both, and that simply meant that it was possible to do. Several others of her Hall were supposed to be here as well.
By the time that she had learned the important things- where to eat, where to sleep, where to report in the morning for work- she was bone tired, both mentally and emotionally. This was not her home, wasn't the place she belonged. Yet. But she would, Jada decided. When she had her green- or maybe a blue?- she would be home here, in this place.
Jada went to sleep dreaming of dragons.

Melodious MemoriesLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 09, 2009 Candidate Folen and Candidate Jada meet each other again after several turns. He is playing a homemade flute when she finds him. The two of them are old friends from Harper Hall, and both are very happy to get to see each other again. Jada's hands are very soft still as she has just come from Harper Hall not even a fortnight before, just forming callouses, and she moans at the loss of soft fingers and careful hands. Folen suggests that perhaps she should get a pair of specially made gloves for her palms, choosing to allow her to borrow his gloves for her to try them out. He mentions that there is a tailor in Telgar Weyr who may be able to make them for her. When she was twelve, she remembers, she wanted to be a Mastersinger. Master Harper was too much to dream for, but Mastersinger was a possibility. And, of course, she simply had to be a Harper at a Weyr, so she could sing for the dragons and make them happy. How she had changed from a girl who wanted to be a dragonrider, to a girl who wanted to be a Mastersinger and then to a girl who wanted to be a Candidate- she realized she had been flighty in her decisions, perhaps, and that though she may miss her family and friends at Harper Hall, she has made her bed to lie in. Folen and Jada discuss favorite chores, least favorite, and even the thought of a Raibbow Concerto, with the dragons of the Weyr singing for the Harpers instead of vice-versa. They laugh at the memory of an old Harper who was well-loved by them both, and Folen helps to soothe her homesickness by being a small piece of home. The two of them make plans to go visit the tailor the next day, and then each return to their chores.

Hands and GlovesLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 12, 2009 This roleplay starts with Folen in the kitchens washing dishes. It is the day after he and Jada made the plan to meet and go to find the tailor. Jada had been pitching dung all day, a task which she despises. However, thanks to the gloves that the other candidate had loaned her, her hands are happy hands! In the tailor's shop, Kita is doing some mending and sewing a new shirt for a dragonrider. It is a good thing that there is a tailor, Folen comments- and Jada is distinctly relieved. At one point in the past, the Candidate had sewn her laundry to herself while mending. Fail. Luckily, the girl should have plenty of funds to not only get her gloves, but pay for mending until she can learn a little more about how to handle needle and thread. Her parents both dote on her, after all, so she has plenty of money for mischief. The comment makes the two Candidates remember a Gather during which Jada had bought bubbly pies as presents for all the masters and then with the help of other Apprentices, had them delivered to the masters in secret. No one knew where they had come from. The masters had wondered for all of ten minutes if the bubbly pies were poisoned, thinking the apprentices may have been getting revenge. And then one of the flits jumped into the pies, and they all got ate right up by the rest. And the masters got none. Entering the shop, Kita greets the two. Jada decides to purchase a pair of gloves, two leather thimbles and two metal thimbles. One of each thimble is given to Folen as a gift. She chooses work gloves that are nearly black in color, and stretches out her hands for measurement. Folen decides to purchase extra mending kits, one for each of them, so that they will not have to borrow from the drudges.

Composition ComplicationsLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 14, 2009 It is a crisp morning, and Weyrsinger M'dor and Green Ichoth are out enjoying a nice swim. Or one of them is, and the other is playing the gitar and trying to write a song. Jadamirei is supposed to be digging trenches, bt it instead wandering around the Weyr with a few spare bubbly pies, which she uses to 'bribe' the dragonrider and his Green. She is very careful, of course, not to get any crumbs on the hides which he is working on- that would be unconscionable. She has been spending much of her time trying to memorize dragons and riders, and hum her practice songs, and with her hands becoming calloused she fears for her manual dexterity. Ichoth enjoys the bubbly pie, and comes from the water to watch M'dor and Jadamirei speak. Jada reveals her plan to go back to Harper Hall if she does not Impress, and then their attention turns to other things. They spend quite some time poring over his composition, and she loans him her flute to play- he is much better at it than she is. Jada's talents, alas, do not lie in wind instruments. Discussion, amidst the beats, and rests and tempo, turn to politics. Jada asks which gold will rise first, and they discuss the Weyrleader. A bit before evening meal, Jadamirei asks Ichoth if she thinks M'dor is a good player, and the Green speaks directly to the Candidate. It is her first time being spoken to by a dragon, a first for the notoriously shy dragon to speak so freely to someone she just met, and all in all it is a great honor for the young Harper. M'dor tells her she can talk with him anytime, and delighted, Jadamirei runs off to take care of her chores in the kitchens, promising to meet the Weyrsinger and his Green later.

The Art of filling holes with WoolLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 13, 2009 This was an Open roleplay for Telgar Candidates. It begins with Folen settling on his bunk in the barracks and pulling out the pack of items he had been given to assist the Candidates in bettering their mending. After all, dragonriders are expected to be able to mend their own gear. Iloraz and Zhierd are two of the first candidates to show up at the mending lesson, the latter not sure if he actually wants to learn or just avoid the weyrbrats. The next candidate to appear is Jadamirei, apologizing for her tardiness and very glad that she remembered her thimbles. And also glad none of the mending is white- when she pricks herself, she won't get blood on the white that she will have to then go and wash out before anyone discovers. The four of them all introduce themselves, and Jada comments on how Folen is good at everything. The male candidate disputes her comment by telling a story about how he made a mess in the kitchens at Harper Hall and got feathers in klah that was meant to go to one of the Masters. He tells all three of his fellow candidates not to worry about it and to take their time- they are Candidates, not weavers. Iloraz threaded the needle like a professional and it was Zhierd who cut himself open first. Jadamirei caught his eye as he looked around and stuck a finger in her mouth, pointing at it as though it were bleeding to try and surreptitiously show him how to handle the issue. Folen shows them all how to properly thread a needle and check to ensure it is long enough, and guides them through the motions of sewing. Jada is still having issues, so the other candidate suggests she try and look at mending as a type of music, with a rhythm and a beat all its own. Humming the Question Song, Jada threads her needle, and begins her work- not even sewing the mending to her clothes.

A word for the WiseLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 12, 2009 A Word for the Wise was an open roleplay. It begins with Weyrsinger M'dor in a corner of the dining hall tuning his gitar. He notices that Iva has returned from her meeting angry, with Malkai as stoic as always and D'rak oddly sober. He starts his performance with the Duty song, Sharp on his shoulder. T'ren and Chaveth are in the dining hall, and the sweet little green thanks M'dor for the song with a croon, embarrassing her companion. The next to be summoned by the sound of music is Jadamirei, who completes the next verse of the song for the weyrsinger and takes a seat near to him. Deneva and Folen also swing by, and the latter pulls out his reed flute and joins in on the performance. The small crowd attracts the attention of the candidate Iloraz. Deneva claims her voice is like that of a wherry being beaten against a tree, and Folen comments that his reed playing is better- Jada points out he'd been asked not to sing at all, and Folen comments that he'd been told he could sing 'When Chaseth's Flame goes out, and not before.' The Weyrsinger inquires how everything is going and people are adjusting. Each had a different answer. In the end, Jada comments, being a Candidate is a lot like being a Harper Apprentice- learning, listening to the masters, and doing the work no one else wants to. She is struck by a pang of homesickness, and a renewed desire to return to Harper Hall if she does not Impress. Her journeyman's knot, or a Mastery? Folen finds Jada's hand and gives it a squeeze. Her homesickness is obvious, and the other Candidate is concerned about her. Yet he gives her hand a squeeze. Together, they will walk towards the future.

Meeting some of the new faces in the Weyr Location: Telgar Date Started: Oct 15, 2009 Meeting some of the New Faces in the Weyr is a Telgar ORP that was never completed. G'ind was to meet some of the Telgar candidates, though Riders and their dragons were able to join in as well. It begins with G'ind and Blue Varoth looking at a pile of leathers drying in the sun. The leather has been left out too long and started to crack. G'ind is naturally upset about this and starts to scrub at the leather with an oiled rag to try and repair what he can. Erikai, a candidate who was an apprentice tailor before she came to the Weyr, had been sent to fetch a satchel full of thimbles. The girl, however, would rather go look at dragons, and is sidetracked by the beasts. In the distance, wings are practicing, and she soon sees one Rider who is not. G'ind, with his Blue. She pauses, stops to see if she will be allowed to assist him, and G'ind gladly accepts not just the assistance, but the company. She pulls out her leather bag and takes a seat to start mending. Yulu is the next to arrive on the scene of the 'crime' as it were, looking to deliver a package to someone unknown to her. She pauses by the pen, possibly to ask for help in her own way. Hot on Yulu's heels comes Folen, fresh from a bath. Time to himself was a rarity, and upon seeing the small group, he also stops, though to see what the problem is, not to find anyone. And last arrives Jada, once again skipping out on kitchen duty on the promise to trade places with someone else later, in hand are, of course, bubbly pies. Seeing the group around the dragon, Jada assumes there has been an accident and is relieved to find that it is not the case.

Journal #2 It was a lovely day, really. As Jada had started the morning, she had actually been hoping that she could get an outdoor assignment. It was so early, but there was already that pretty day feeling in the grey sky. The light was just peeking up, and dragons and their riders were rousing. The kitchens were already hard at work for those who broke their fast early, and the dishes were piling up. The Candidate tied back her hair as she entered the room, grabbing a roll and stuffing it down her throat briefly before taking a post at the dishes without being directed. Someone needed to do it, after all.
She worked at the dishes through midday meal, at which point she found herself released to go and enjoy a few candlemarks to herself. It was a lovely surprise, actually, so snagging a sweet roll she ran outside to watch the wings practice. Outside, Wingleader I'dan's Wing was coming to a landing for a mid-day meal. By now she was coming to identify dragons, and riders. A flash of bleached gold hair atop a rippled, watery hide was what got her attention. She waited for the group to disperse before she hurried over to Tethis, shoving the roll at her friend. “I missed it all?”
“We were hungry.” the blonde replied. “Feylith kept on whinging. Thanks to him, I'm going to probably be digging trenches later.” Jada frowned at the blue, whose eyes whirled complacently. “Go hunt, you. It's down here.” A moment later, she sighed. “Fine.”
It must be amazing to be able to speak to a dragon like that. Another part of your sum, the other half of your soul? One day, Jada might be so lucky. “What's down here?” the Candidate asked, following her friend as the stocky woman moved over to the stone where a leather bag sat. Lifting the bag, the Bluerider was pulling out cloth, digging something out.
“A belated Nameday gift. I owe you a few, don't I? Hopefully, this will make up for it.” Tethis smiled at Jada, and dumped a green ball into the Candidate's hands. It was hot, and hard.
A firelizard egg.

Journal #3 Any day now, the firelizard egg that Jada had received from her female Bluerider friend, Tethis, would be Hatching. She had been told that the egg would begin to rock, and she had carried it everywhere with her, in her pocket. She'd been working the kitchens for days, begging the indulgence of the Candidatemaster and the kitchen drudges to let her stay near meat- if her egg started to rock, she wanted it to safely hatch. The deep green ball would hopefully contain a firelizard that was as pretty a shade- based on the size, one of the other Candidates had told her, the egg did indeed contain a green. But no one could say just what shade of green it was.
The Candidate was stirring a pot when she felt the first bump against her leg, heard the first crack. For a second, she feared the worst- that she had cracked the Firelizard egg herself, killing the small embryo within. And then another, and a rush of fluid dripping from her pocket. Why had she not thought about the mess of Hatching? She could have put it in a basket near the fire or something. But the egg was cracking quickly, and Jada wasn't sure how much time she would have.
She grabbed a strip of wherry meat, pulling the egg out of her pocket. It was slimy and moist, but there was no wiggling lizard yet. She set it carefully on the floor and took half a step back. “Feed it!” one of the weyrbrats encouraged. “It has to hatch first, dummy.” Said another. Jada remained silent, focused on the lizard. A small nose was the first thing to peek out of the shell, a shade of lime. It was taking forever, this Hatching. Real dragons, she reminded herself, took longer. But this was her egg, her firelizard, her friend.
A few moments later, another crack, and the shell split neatly. The firelizard looked around, eyes whirling red and yellow, red and white. Jada reached out, offering the meat to the lizard. The green cried out, squawking in alarm, and the brats scrambled back. Slowly. Slowly. And as Jada pushed the meat forward again, Dolcissimo accepted.

Journal #4 The day that Allegretto joined Jadamirei and Dolcissimo's family was unassuming as any other. The green firelizard was still young, sleeping on the girl's shoulder, so small that they had been afraid she would not survive. Yet so far she had, and Jada was grateful for it. Dolci was a good friend for a lonely candidate, and for all her youth, peaceful and not disruptive in the least. It was pleasing- some firelizards Jada could remember being incredibly energetic. Dolcissimo, however, seemed to be content laying back and taking life in stride. Jada could appreciate that. In fact, she was more than happy to encourage it.
Together, the firelizard and girl had found their way to the hot springs. Dolcissimo slipped off Jada's shoulder and onto a sun-warmed rock as the Candidate slid into the water, submerging herself thoroughly. It was nice, the warm waters soothing tired and bruising muscles. Sometimes Jada forgot how much she ached, not just physically, but with homesickness and the weight of being lonely. She had friends, but... How long exactly she soaked, but it was less than a candlemark from her arrival when Jada was dressed again and getting ready to leave. A screech distracted her.
A little firelizard looked anguished, her eyes dull. Dolcissimo crooned, and Jada moved in the golden lizard's direction, drawn by her curiosity. A small egg, burnished yellow-brown, shimmered in the sand, fallen into a hole. Other eggs lay around her, shattered and broken, but this one... may still have a chance. Quickly, the girl reached her hand down, grabbing at the egg. The gold firelizard flew at her, clawing, and Dolci gave a startled eep, vanishing. Gripping the egg, Jada tugged it out of the sand, setting it on a rock. Instead of moving to see if her egg was safe, the small gold gave another cry and vanished, leaving Jada alone with her child and the smashed shells of the rest of her clutch.
Dolcissimo came back while Jada was pondering, faceted eyes flickering in alarm. “It's alright Dolci.” Jada soothed the green, who quickly relaxed. “We have a new family member, is all. I hope.”

Clearing UpLocation: Telgar Date Started: Oct 27, 2009 The open roleplay Clearing up was for candidate and drudge characters. It opens with Folen rolling up his sleeves and looking around the kitchen. There are piles of dirty dishes, and more coming in almost every minute. Finding a spot, he begins to start his work. Kylar, a candidate, comes rushing through the kitchens and lower caverns, being chased by playful Weyrbrats. A dragonrider gets in his way, and the candidates dodges to the side and crashes into Folen on accident, sending water and feathers flying every which way. Folen manages to keep the pot from knocking into anyone and helps the boy off the floor. The Weyrbrats are shooed away, and as an apology for making a mess of Folen's duties, Klar offers to assist. Jada, who had been helping with the food, is sent to go assist in shooing off the children. She is good with them, and they with her. Once the last of the weyrbrats are out of the kitchen, she offers to lend a hand briefly with cleaning the dishes, though she won't have very long. Folen makes a comment about kitchen misadventures of the past- such as the time a firelizard lay her eggs in a cooking pot. More than one of the men had been able to hatch his dinner, but alas, there had been losses. Allegretto, Jada's golden firelizard, starts plucking the feathers off of Kylar, setting each on the floor as she plucks them. Jada tries to teach her to put them in a pot, and the gold chooses to remove the feathers from the pot instead. Finally the gold stops picking on her Girl, and turns her attention to Kylar, chastising him when he drops a feather that misses the pot. Hilena drops by and joins the dish brigade, and the conversation turns to which of the Queens is going to rise.

Journal #5 Jada was not a stupid girl. Unwise, perhaps, and willfully naïve to many of the ways of men and dragons, but she was not a complete and utter dimglow. Nor was she ignorant of the ways of men and women. As a child, living with her Healer mother, she had seen women thick with child, and heard of the many ways that they were conceived. She'd heard of women who did not want their children, of men who did not want their children. She'd heard women scream as life came forth, and seen grown men grow pale at the sight. None of the wailing and arguing she had ever heard compared to the way this woman was sobbing.
A green had Risen yesterday. It was her first time seeing a flight, and the madness that took her rider. The men had surrounded the rider like predators, even as their dragons chased her through the sky- but only one dragon could catch the Green, and only one rider. Jada had fled before she could see the end of it, but she knew what would happen. And now, hiding behind the corner, she listened to a woman crying. “Don't take me Between.” the girl begged the rider. “If it happens, I'll be a good mother, you'll see.” Something was said in a low tone, sharp. “No! Don't tell- I-” silence. More tears. It was heartwrenching, in its way. The girl loved him, and he was a Rider. It was her body, but what were the rules? Was the girl to give up her chance at a child to suit the rider's needs? She had been a willing participant in what had happened between them, she looked to be a woman grown. And the girl was no rider- it would not diminish a Wing were she to have a child. So where did the rules lie? She listened with only half an ear to the tones, trapped in a small alcove where she could not slip away without being discovered.
Jada didn't want to hear the drudge crying. It broke her heart. Footsteps, and the crying diminished. Jada peered out of her alcove, watching the man and woman move to the bowl. She followed, curious to how the drama would end. In the sunlight, a brown waited patiently while his rider and passenger mounted. They lifted, launched into the sky, and an instant later, the deed was done. Jada licked dry lips, and went towards the kitchens.

What is Healthy for oneLocation: Telgar Date Started: Dec 29, 2009 The first meeting of Y'kar, Kannaroth and Jadamirei is late one evening. Jadamirei has just slipped away from her kitchen duties and with some leftover bubbly pies, made it down to the hot springs. With her are her firelizards. The Green, Dolcissimo, tries to relax and the Gold, Allegretto, comes diving from nowhere to squirt candidate and flit alike. Also at the Hot Springs are Y'kar and his Green, Kannaroth. They are attracted in her direction by the sound of her flute and the two firelizards along with her. Jada is her normal, naïve self, and Y'kar and Kannaroth quickly (and correctly) identify her as someone they can take advantage of. While Kannaroth and the flits talk, Jada and Y'kar talk. He tells her about how he happened to find his way to the Weyr, and about his mother's malcontent with the fact that he Impressed a Green instead of the Bronze she had dreamed of for her son. Jada shares her bubbly pies with her flits, who happily gorge themselves- Kannaroth refuses, but Y'kar shares some of the klah. Jada's friendly overtures are outwardly accepted, while on the inside both dragon and rider are mocking her. Not only for her dim-witted innocence, but for her physical attributes- most especially for her long hair. Y'kar asks her for her name, and she is ashamed to realize she has been prying into the young Rider's life without sharing her own name. She pushes aside the discomfort at her two companions, and instead tries to maintain her friendly demeanor. Instead, she chooses to go for a swim- maybe that is the reason for her discomfort? Half an hour later, she returns to the edge of the pool and says her goodnights, leaving the remainder of the bubbly pies for Y'kar to share with his 'roommates,' the other riders of the Terrible Trio.

Journal #5 It was rather strange to see Allegretto, a lovely, laid-back creature, being so proddy. Jada had been almost concerned, but by now she was growing accustomed to the antics of a Green that was about to go on a Flight. Bronzes, Browns and even a few bold Blues had been stalking her and her lizards for days, each twirling and frolicking as though to try and woo the Queen lizard, and she was rebuffing them all with some vehemence. It was too soon, Jada guessed, same as it was too soon for a few days before a Green would take to the skies.
She had seen flights before, and watched with some curiosity. There was not the emotion of a Green flight, which roused quite a group of Riders, and Jada had heard that a good Gold flight could rouse even those not dragon-bonded. But Allegretto was just a firelizard. What would it be like? Would she feel anything? Would the gold share her images with the girl like a dragon would? Probably not- she'd heard nothing of the sort. And even if she did, there was no need to control the Gold, nor would there be the impulse to mate as so many Riders did.
When the gold finally rose, is was a fair of color. Jada stared out over the sands as her Golden lizard ducked and swooped. Bronzes and Browns chased her, and one large Blue which quickly fell out of the running. The flight seemed to go on higher and higher, until she lost sight of them in the sun. And the, Alle finally fell from the sky, tangled with a bronze lizard that Jada didn't recognize. What would she do with the eggs? Would the owner of the Bronze come and find her, or would she be able to sell them if she could get them away from Allegretto? Unless the clutch was small- and even if it were not- there was no possible way for her to keep all of the eggs! She couldn't handle that many firelizards.
By the time Jada was going to sleep, Allegretto still had not returned.

I'm just a GirlLocation: Telgar Date Started: Dec 29, 2009 For the last several days Jada has been working with little but meals off- mending, kitchen chores, tossing muck- chores that are not even all assigned to her, but instead taken over as a favor. Today, however, is cloudless and shuny and she has taken the morning off to go spend quality time with her bubbly pies, flute and small gitar. She is wearing breeches, and carrying a small watering can since another candidate asked her to finish up with some of the watering trays. The day is so beautiful, however, that unable to resist, Jada spins. And water goes everywhere, including the front of her fellow candidate, Yulu. The other female is rightfully agitated by the fact that Jada is such a dimglow, and glares at her. Then sneezes. Jada pats the other Candidate on the shoulder, and weakly offers to share her bubbly pies, as if a pie would do anything. Yulu asks if Jada has any clothing to borrow, and they hurry down to her room. Yulu does eat one of the bubbly pies on the way, and when they get to Jada's room, the Candidate starts digging through the chest at the end of her bed. Three dresses are all that she has available, her pants mysteriously missing. The other woman is eventually given a cream dress to wear, and when the woman unbinds her chest, Jada is horrified to see that Yulu... has a more ample bosom. It is terrible disappointing, especially given the fact that Yulu seems to think og herself as a man. And thinks of scarves as mere accessories! The two head down to the dining hall and take a seat at the end of a table. Yulu even eats like a man, a disconcerting realization to Jada. Three days later, Jada comes to visit Yulu, pants and an extra gift in hand. As an apology for almost getting Yulu sick, she has brought her two firelizard eggs. Stunned, Yulu kisses Jada's hand, confusing the dark-haired woman even more.
