The entire way to her room he was mentally cursing himself. Why did I accept her offer? There was no call for it. I spent so much time and effort into leaving my life behind me...and for what? To put myself in every ghoul's debt that I meet? But he had already consented, and now she strangely enough seemed happy. I thought she was trying to get rid of me?

That was when his cheeks started to burn. No, the ghoul was just being nice. She had probably noticed his discomfort and was trying to be polite. And he had over thought things and assumed she was trying to get rid of him. Well now he just had to live with the consequences. He was so wrapped up in his own thoughts that he failed to notice when they arrived at the room and she had to wrestle the door open herself.

Following her in he looked around for the minipets he had faintly heard her mention, but despite his attempt at distracting himself one thought kept repeating in his head. Oh Great Mantis I am in her room. I am in a ghoul's room. Over. And over. And over. And over.

He set his bags down as well, and shut the door behind him, wanting to make sure that it did not accidentally lock him in there. Other than that he made no move toward her rooms, preferring to simply stand there shifting from foot to foot uneasily. "Perhaps I can help you unpack the bags?" he suggested, already moving forward to begin doing just that. "Minipets are fine Miss, I now have my own." A fond smile flitted across his face at the thought. "Her name is Princess Eva."

If Xiu noticed his discomfort, she didn't mention it, focusing her attention instead on getting everything ready. Pots and pans were procured from the cupboards, as were a variety of utensils and spices. She turned to look at Yin at his offer, and was about to protest when she realized that he had already begun to help. Smiling, she gave a little shake of her head as she switched on the stove and set a pan on the element. "Thank you, but really! You're my guest--there's no need trouble yourself. You should be relaxing."

Still, it was nice having company while she was cooking. She supposed that it was possible for them to carry a conversation if they were in different parts of the room, but that would require yelling. Furthermore, it was going to get a lot louder in here once she actually started cooking.

Xiu looked up at Yin at the mention of him owning a minipet--what kind of mini could it be, she wondered?--but the look of curiosity quickly changed into a bright grin. So her name was Princess Eva, was it? How adorable! "Does she live up to her name?" She laughed, moving towards the sink to wash her hands, "Hmm, a princess...sweet with a bit of a spoiled side, maybe?"

Bringing a package of meat with her, Xiu walked back to the stove. She poured oil into the pan and the reaction was immediate, the oil sizzling and popping. The noise only intensified when she tossed on a really large slab of meat. She really hadn't been kidding when she said that she had bought too much--the piece of meat she was currently cooking was only one of two, and considering the baku's stature, it was unlikely that she could even finish one by herself. Hopefully Yin was hungry.

"Do you have any preference how you like your meat cooked?" She raised her voice over the sizzling noise, gesturing towards the pan.

Yin watched her as she cooked, still standing by the door. Princess Eva was a wonderfully safe topic, and he latched onto it with gusto. "She does indeed. She is somewhat demanding, but she can and has taken care of me when I most needed it. She refuses to answer to simply Eva, and she sleeps wherever she wants to, despite the fact that I got her a bed. She was actually a gift from Miss Danny, and is a species called a rabo. She is carnivorous as well, but I do my best to find healthy food for her."

When he paused to take a breath he realized he had been rambling and flushed slightly. There was a moment of agonizing (to him) silence, and then the demoness asked him about his food. "Mantodae often eat their meat fairly rare. But however you cook it will be welcomed." Well cooked meat was not something that he enjoyed, but he could hardly turn up his nose at a free meal.

The fact that Yin spoke so much about Princess Eva was enough of a testament as to how fond he must have been of her. Xiu listened quietly as he spoke, her lips spread into a wide grin. This was definitely the first time since they met that he spoke so freely.

It was nice to see, but alas, it didn't last long until he suddenly fell silent. Xiu gave a little nod of her head at his answer--she would keep the meat on the rarer side, then--before she emitted a little laugh. "So, you're friends with Danny!" The bright fire-demon was always a pleasure to be around, the baku found. "And it's good to hear that you're so fond of Princess Eva. If it weren't for my own minipets, I'd be a little lonely sometimes, I think."

As if summoned by the conversation, Xiu's trio of minis poked their heads into the kitchen area, peering up at Yin with an air of curiosity.

"Speak of the devil." Though she would usually go to pet each of them in greeting, the baku was currently occupied with slicing some vegetables for herself and cooking both pieces of meat. Before long (because no one wants to read a billion long posts about Xiu going through each step), there were two plates on the counter top. The first was...well, meat, and more meat, seasoned and decorated with some garnishes for color. The second plate held a much smaller portion of meat along with some vegetables. It was pretty clear which was for who.

"Let's move these out to the table, shall we? And...mmm, tea? Or water?"

"Miss Danny is one of my closest friends," he confirmed. She was actually one of his only friends, but that was not a factor. A sudden delightful scent, one other than the cooking meat, met his nose and his stomach gurgled excitedly. He looked over to where the three minipets had appeared. He made no attempt to go toward them, but he did crouch down so that he could see them better as Miss Xiu-Ying finished cooking ((I wanted to read the billion long posts)). When she set the plates on the counter he straightened up, looking at them with obvious desire.

"Tea?" he questioned, sounding both hopeful and gleeful at the same time. While mantodae did not eat plants, drinking them was an entirely different manner. He had not been able to have tea since he had arrived at the school, as it was not included in his lunch and knowing which plants were safe to steep into his water was not one of his strong points. "I would very much appreciate tea if you have it available." He picked up both plates, carrying them over to the table and setting them down. "Do you prefer a particular seat?" Either way he would probably wait for her to sit before he actually sat himself.

"She's a fun friend to have, isn't she? She's very energetic." So much so that Xiu couldn't keep up with her sometimes! She was pleased to hear that the boil and the energetic fire demon were friends, however--they seemed to balance each other quite well, in her opinion, and good friendships usually meant that they had personalities that meshed well (even if they were opposites at first glance).

Perhaps that conversation could wait until they were actually seated though. Catching the tone in Yin's voice at the mention of tea, the baku moved over to a cupboard and sheepishly opened it up. Inside were tons--tons--of labeled canisters filled with loose leaf teas, and dried flowers and herbs. "I, ah. I brew my own tea. If you don't have a particular preference, I'll make one of my favourites, and hopefully you'll enjoy it was well." She had to consider what they were eating first--in this case, a sweet fruit tea would probably not be a wise idea.

Out came some of the canisters, a tea kettle, a teapot, and a pair of teacups. The tea, fortunately, would not take long to make. Moving swiftly--as she clearly had done this many times before--it only took a few minutes until the teapot with filled with a fragrant, but not overpowering, tea. Setting everything on a tray, she moved to the table and placed it between the two plates.

"Oh, um, no! No seat in particular--please, sit down wherever you like." She chose one of the chairs, but before sitting down, she reached out to set a teacup by the boil's plate, carefully filling it with some of the freshly brewed tea. Then she did the same with her own.

"Please, go ahead! I, er, I hope it's to your liking." Was she nervous? A little. The baku was always a little anxious when it came to cooking for someone new.

Yin nodded. The fire demoness was very energetic indeed. "She is like a child," he pointed out, then wished he had not. It was not a rude thing to say, but it was certainly not the nicest, even it it was true.

He stood around awkwardly as she made the tea, mouth watering as the scents wafted toward him. "I do not have a preference, where I grew up we drank what tea was served." Which was typically the basic tea, or whatever there was an overabundance of. Ghouls got the cream of the crop, but tea was tea and he missed it. And whatever kind she was brewing smelled interesting. And not like water. He missed having a drink that was not water.

He seated himself after she took one seat and obviously laid the tea out for him at another. Normally he would have waited for her to take a bit before daring to eat, but she seemed to be waiting on him...

He reached down only to find that to his horror there was the shiny silver eating utensils that he had seen in the creepeteria. He had never used those before. He typically ate with his hands, going over to some dark corner when in public to feed, or just eating in his dorm room. Of course he had been taught how to eat politely in front of ghouls, but that had always been with chopsticks. And with thinly sliced strips of meat, not full slabs of it.

He touched the handles hesitantly, trying to remember what he had seen others do. And was at a lost. After far too long of a pause he reached up to pick up the tea cup, bringing it up to take a slightly burning drink. "It is very nice," he said after he swallowed, and hoped that she would eat now so he could see how he was supposed to do it.

Xiu was actually puzzled when Yin only took a sip of the tea, her gaze anxiously falling to his plate. Was it not too his liking? Maybe she had cooked it beyond the point that he liked? Too much seasoning? Or maybe...

Maybe she was overthinking this, and he was simply waiting for her to take the first bite--he had already proven himself to be an extremely polite boil. Slowly, Xiu lifted up her own utensils--knife in her right hand and fork in her left--held down her small piece of meat with her fork, and then sliced a piece off. She speared it with her fork and lifted it up, but before taking a bite, she gestured towards Yin's plate.

"U-um, please, go ahead!" Did she sound a little more worried now? Maybe. After a moment of thought, she hastily added, "If you don't like it, I can try to make something else! I might have more ingredients in the fridge, and if I don't, the market isn't that far from here, really..."

Yin was watching her carefully, trying to determine how to use the eating utensils. Okay, knife in that hand, fork in the other. He was staring so intently that when she spoke it jarred him just a little, and he scrambled to pick up the silverware. "It smells delightful, I am sure it tastes wonderful," he quickly assured her.

And then stared back at his food. He could do this. He held the forks as he had seen her do, or tried to at least. His overly large hands and claws were in the way and the metal was awkward in his hands. He fumbled a bit but eventually got managed to grip them both, though not properly. Like Miss Xiu-Ying he stabbed at the meat with the pronged device, then brought up the knife to gently saw at it.

The meat slipped away. Determinedly he gripped at the fork, doing his best to keep it in place and worked at cutting the meat. And worked. And worked.

Eventually he was rewarded with a badly cut morsel of meat, feeling both ashamed and triumphant with his effort. Then he tried to work his fork out of the slab. A bit of wiggling and it was free. Okay then, just stab the little piece and bring it up to your mouth.

It was halfway to his mouth before it fell off of the fork, landing on the tiniest edge of the table that had been between his plate and his lap. Looking positively horrified he stared at it. Did he eat it? Did he leave it there? Did he throw it away?

She relaxed a little at his reassurance, and was about to lift her fork to her mouth when she spotted something falling from the corner of her eye. Glancing up, she blinked with confusion until she spotted the piece of meat sitting on the table. Aah. "Don't worry about it!" Xiu reached out to grab a napkin and held it out to him, "You should probably throw that piece away, and...hmm..."

The baku eyed the piece of meat curiously, noting the roughly cut edges. Was the blade dull, perhaps? "Would you like me to get you a sharper knife?" There was a pause, and then, "If I may ask, what do you usually use to eat with?" The way he had wielded the fork and knife had seemed unfamiliar, as if they were foreign objects to him.

That caused a bit of concern for Xiu: it was her duty as a hostess--and a friend--to make sure that he was at ease and enjoying himself. However, if the look on his face was any indication, he just seemed more tense than anything. Even if she told him to relax, would he listen to her?

"Yin Cang," She started, smiling, "Please, make yourself at home, or let me know if you have a particular request. Seeing you so tense makes me uneasy as well!"

He took the napkin from her carefully, picking up the bite and wiping off the table. He had wasted food. Not just any food but homemade food cooked just for him and he had just wasted it. That alone made him want to just leave the table right then and there. She then offered him a sharper knife, but he knew that was not the issue.

"If we use eating utensils we have chopsticks," he informed her with a bit of unease. He did not want to tell the rather nice ghoul that he used something she could not provide him with. And chopsticks still would not solve the problem of actually cutting the meat.

Next, he wanted to crawl under the table in shame. He had made her uneasy because he could not use normal (it seemed) eating utensils. "Please do not trouble yourself Miss Xiu-Ying." As if to show her that nothing was wrong he attacked the meat with renewed vigor, though that soon dissipated as he worked at the meat. Why was it so hard to use a fork and knife? Finally rewarded with a new bit of meat he speared it and brought it up to his mouth, leaning forward and hunching a bit to ensure it did not meet the same fate. He chewed slowly, savoring the morsel and when he had finally swallowed he gave her a smile. "It is more delicious than I had expected." Even if it was incredibly hard to eat.

Despite the fact that it was such a little thing, Xiu's eyes lit up at the mention of chopsticks. "Oh! So you're able to use them!" The circle of people who she knew who were capable of using them here was small, which was...surprising, really, considering it was what she had grown up using back home. Taking another sip of her tea, she smiled. "I'll remember that for the next time I get to cook for you, then. Maybe I can even brush up on some recipes that use rats."

She was about 80% sure that such recipe books existed. While she may not eat them, Xiu was certain that many races did. Hopefully the recipes wouldn't be too hard to figure out.

She watched Yin hack at the meat with a small smile, clearing her throat slightly in an attempt to catch his attention. "You don't have to be so...vigorous with the cutting. If you just saw slowly but firmly, it should just...cut in half." Okay, so she could use some eloquence when it came to explaining things. Fortunately, her attention was drawn away from this thought as Yin successfully managed to take a bite, paying her cooking a kind comment.

The little baku flushed in delight at the compliment, her tail wagging behind her. "I-I'm glad it's to your liking!"

Miss Xiu-Ying suggesting that she should fix something special just for him was such a ridiculous notion that he ignored it entirely. She was probably just being polite or something. Her instructions had been too late for his first bite, but as he was letting the flavors explore his mouth and chewing he thought about what she had said. So he began to cut it as she suggested, and was rewarded with more success than previously.

"I did not realize that food could taste like this," he admitted. "It has a very nice amount of seasoning, and the meat is quite tender. Earlier you had agreed that cooking was a hobby? I believe that you could make a fine living as a cook if you desired to." As he spoke he focused rather intently on cutting his food, amassing a couple of pieces by the time he was finished. Not wanting to talk more than he should he brought another bite to his mouth, accidentally scraping the fork against one of his sharp teeth as he pulled the meat off and inwardly cringing at the noise. That was probably rude of him. His worries seemed to melt away as he chewed though, the delightful flavor doing wonders at distracting him.

The sudden compliment made her blush become deeper, and she averted her gaze to her plate of food. "You think? Actually, I always wanted to do something with cooking. Maybe open up a cafe, or a tea house, or something..." There was a long pause as she trailed off, followed by a short laugh. "Though my parents wouldn't approve, so I suppose that's...probably out of the question."

Whereas she would have said this with resignation before, there was a great deal of hesitance in her tone now. When she first arrived at Amityville, it was true that Xiu had been rather docile and obedient, a result of how she was brought up. However, after having spent months of Amityville (and getting thrust into situations where being docile would have been useless), she had changed a little. Enough, at least, to determine that she needed to grow more independent rather than constantly cater to the wishes of her parents.

"Well, I suppose we'll see after I graduate." The ghoul said finally, flashing a smile in Yin's direction as she finished off the last of her vegetables.

Yin thought back to the meal he had consumed at the maul, sitting cross-legged under the table with Alexander. "I believe that your food is of a high enough quality for that. And you seem much nicer than waiters that I have encountered, so I am sure that people would enjoy visiting. If you can convince your parents." That was an odd concept, a ghoul needing to convince someone to let her do as she pleased.

The mantodae fell into silence, content to consume his food. Cutting his food became easier, though the eating utensils remained awkward in his overly large hands. Each bite was a challenge, but well worth the reward. He was more than willing to clear his plate, marveling in the wonderful sensation of being full. "Where do you clean your dishes Miss Xiu-Ying?" Cleaning the dishes was the least that he could do for the delightful meal. He had not even realized how relaxed he was in the presence of a ghoul until this moment. He had so casually talked to her, how surprising.
