Well seeing that Sharsa hadn’t simply run off in a fright Alu-lote decided to take that as a good sign. Feed an azrein for a day; their happy; teach an azrein how to work; they can feed themselves. Alu-lote nodded an leaned down to pick up the brush before realizing that Sharsa was still staring at her. Had she done something wrong? Sharsa’s eyes were bright and there looked to be worry behind them. Alu-lote straightened up feeling the need to reassure Sharsa. “Don’t worry. I’d make sure to find you a good place to work, even if it was simply helping me and my chosen. I promise you that.” She wondered what else could make Sharsa worried when a thought popped into her head. What if Sharsa was thinking she had to answer right away? That wasn’t what Alu-lote wanted. The other mare certainly didn’t need the pressure. “I meant it when I said you don’t need ot answer right away. I still have to ask around and we need to find out what kind of strengths and weaknesses you have so we can find you a good job. That’ll take a long long while. I just thought I’d mention it now so that you knew someone was looking out for you. Promise.”

Sharsa relaxed after a moment. She was laughing inside her mind. How foolish she had been to worry this was just how Alu-lote showed that she cared. Not much apparently if she’s already trying to figure out a way to put me to work. Still a while could be a long while and even then extended to forever if Sharsa could put the right face on at the right times. She noticed Alu-lote seemed to take her silence and relaxing as consent because she picked up the grooming bush once more and continued her task. Well just as well if Sharsa wasn’t expected to answer then she most definitely wouldn’t. It made things so much easier if Alu-lote didn’t have anything to go back to and definitely state that Sharsa said this or that. Sharsa continued eating again and this time didn’t stop until the grain was completely gone. She wasn’t going to share with an azrein that suggested she get a job! Even if it did make for a more believable or likeable front, there were some things Sharsa would not stoop too. Of course Alu-lote finished cleaning up Sharsa’s messy mane by the time Sharsa finished eating. So Sharsa decided to find a way to come and go as she wished from this place. “Ummm.. Menel. I just wanted to say thank you. For everything, the food, the grooming, and even for offering to help me find a job. I know that there’s nothing I can do to repay you for any of this.” Sharsa looked at Alu-lote with what appeared to be fondness. “I know you live here with your chosen and are nice enough that you’d probably let me stay here if I asked it of you. I won’t though. You see I know how close an Azrein and their bonded are. I’ve seen it so much. If I were here and if your chosen is as nice as you then you’d both be focused on me and I don’t think I’d like that. You two should always think about each other, but if it’s alright with you…. Could I come back another day? To be here with you?”

“Of course that would be alright. It’s very considerate of you to think of me and my chosen in such a light..” Alu-lote wanted to nuzzle Sharsa for having such a pure heart. She had been thinking of having Sharsa stay the night, but to find out Sharsa thought more of Alu-lote and the special bond between Azrein and human despite Sharsa’s own painful past was simply amazing. Alu-lote set it in her mind to help Sharsa no matter what. Even if it took months she would make sure that the pure little white mare would have a job in a safe and loving environment even if she had to go all the way to castle to plead for it! Alu-lote looked at Sharsa wondering if perhaps she shouldn’t ask her to stay since Alu-lote knew Reo wouldn’t mind. Still Alu-lote decided to take Sharsa at her word. “Alight. I won’t ask you to stay, but I will look forward to seeing you again. Though hopefully under better circumstances than nearly colliding with one another.” It would take time Alu-lote figured before Sharsa was truly at ease with her, and longer still before Sharsa was at ease with humans, but that was the beauty of a young friendship. They had time. “I’m often here or in the marketplace. Perhaps I’ll see you again soon?” Alu-lote hoped it would be soon and that Sharsa wasn’t going to just run off. Having faith in others was harder to do at times than one expects it to be. Still somehow Alu-lote managed to convince herself that this wouldn’t be the last time she saw Sharsa.

Trying hard to contain her mirth Sharsa gave Alu-lote a huge smile. “Don’t worry Menel, you’ll see me again soon I promise. ” With that she started to walk away. She was feed, groomed, and even had a place she could come back too. After all now that she’d not stayed once how could Alu-lote deny her if Sharsa ever asked? She’d already pointed out she wouldn’t so that Alu-lote would have time with her ball and chain, so if Sharsa ever asked in the future with a slightly timid look, the white mare was sure the feather brain would think that it was an emergency and take her in right away. She kept her pace even so as not to seem to eager or to lax in leaving. The image you left an azrein with was the one they’d remember you by the next time they saw you. So leaving with an even pace would hopefully indicate that she kept her word with wanting to not interrupt time with chosen, but also that she wasn’t just running off. Sharsa figured that over half of what she did was lost on the simple minds of others, but it made her feel better to have a reason for the things she did.

Picking up the brush and the feed sack with her mouth Alu-lote carried them back to the grooming area Reo always had set up. She dumped the bag down and set the brush on the counter. Of course she’d talk to her chosen as soon as Reo closed up the shop and came home, but for now Alu-lote decided to relax and think. Sharsa seemed shy, but once you broke through that shell she was a sweet azrein. Alu-lote was sure she could find a person or herd that would want someone like Sharsa. If that happened Sharsa could have food, shelter, and friends. Feeling her heart swell up a bit with pride the winged mare allowed herself a chuckle. Reo was always telling her she couldn’t save the world, but what was wrong with helping just one azrein here or there. Reo was just as bad as Alu-lote was about it all even if her chosen would never admit it. It was why they were compatible and why Alu-lote felt such joy at making a new friend, and helping that friend find a future worth living.

*A few months later*
Snapping up an apple Alu-lote tossed it into the small bag she had taken off the stable shelf. The sun was warm and bright. She smiled to herself. So much had happened over the last few months. She and Dante now had two lovely children. It was true they fought, but what children didn’t from time to time? Dante was taking care of Valerio and Reoakee was out running errands for her shop. The just left Alu-lote and her daughter Losa Tincmaeg at home right now. Reaching up Alu-lote plucked another off the tree. She supposed she would go back later and get a few more for Dante and Valerio. She chuckled as she dropped the apple into the bag. Thankfully this one stayed in. Her whole family liked apples. She preferred peaches, but she didn’t mind. After all the more apples the children ate the more peaches she had for herself… well almost. She and Reo had peach eating contests from time to time. Alu-lote always won. The half-elf had such a small stomach in Alu-lote’s opinion; though with her smaller body it wasn’t a big surprise.

(no post color for her until foal stage) Sniffling loudly Losa could smell those oh so tasty apples outside. She knew what they were because her mother kept telling her about them whenever she brought them in. They were pretty like her father’s mane. Red. She liked that color. Trying to stand up she collapsed since her legs weren’t used to her weight. She wanted to be able to move better like her brother did. She made a small noise before trying again. It wasn’t fair sometimes it seemed like her brother developed faster than her. He was always picking on her too. Sitting on her. Sometimes she really wanted to hurt him. Still there were times he was nice too. If she was cold at night and her parents weren’t around she would get close to him and be fine. He was warm just like her blanket. The other thing wasn’t too bad either. It was tall and walked on two legs. Her mother said it was a good friend of the family, but how could you trust a thing that had its coat change colors every day? Such a weird thing it was. Still it brought apples and help to keep them warm… and toys. It brought things like a round soft rock they could kick around. Ball. Yes that was it. The round thing was a ball.

Ick the filthy humans were everywhere in this little pit of a village. Shaking her head Sharsa made her way through the place and headed toward the little shop. It was time to see if she couldn’t score a free meal and check up on her ‘dear friend’ Menel. It had been so long since she last visited and Sharsa wanted to make sure she didn’t lose a contact. Even if the other mare was useless now that didn’t mean she would stay that way. All it took was one useful piece of gossip or one even possibly twist-able fact and Sharsa could have some real fun. A human bumped into her nearly topping over. Shifting Sharsa feigned being uncomfortable and conveniently managed to maneuver her hooves to step down on the package the two legger was carrying. It made a most satisfying crunching noise. Smiling on the inside while frowning on the outside she heard the human make a small noise and decided it was time to move before the wench could start yelling. Trying to remember the way to the shop the white mare was quite proud of herself for realizing she had stumbled upon familiar terrain. She was close now.

Picking up the bag with her mouth Alu-lote took it back into the stables. She set the bag down in an empty stall and took out and apple. She could see her little girl huddled up under a blanket. Thankfully she was just resting now, judging from the thumps she heard just before entering the stable Alu-lote would guess that Losa was trying to stand up again. She knew it wouldn’t be long before her little ones where up and about without any assistance at all so she was encouraging them but really in no rush for them to grow up too soon. Bringing the apple over she crunched it in her mouth before opening her mouth and letting the crushed apple fall out just in front of the nose peeking out from under the blanket. The pieces were small enough that Losa could nibble on them without Alu-lote worry the little one would choke. She knew that Losa had nursed off of her earlier so this was really more a treat than a meal. Hearing a noise outside Alu-lote assumed Dante was back. She knew it couldn’t be Reo. Even with the distance to the village between them she could feel Reo being disgruntled over some spilled package she had picked up a while ago.

Nibbling on her apple Losa felt her mother nuzzle the blanket and through it the filly. Then she heard her mother’s steps as her mother crossed the floor and went back outside. Where was she going? Where father and brother back? Or was it the odd two legger? Either way she wanted to know. Picking up the apple in her mouth Losa tried again to stand and fell down. Still she was a little further out of the place she had been laying in. She tried again and managed to stand up and take a wobbly step before coming down again. This time it was hard to breathe. She made a small noise and then another. Finally she sneezed and the apple that had been threatening to fall down the back of her throat cleared itself from her throat and her mouth. Well that hadn’t been fun. Leaving the apple bit where it was so she didn’t do that again Losa kept moving forward in her wobbling and falling manner until she was close to the outside sunlight. She could hear what was going on from here. That would make things better.

Seeing Menel come out Sharsa put on a smile. “Hello again. It’s been a while.” She was greeted with a smile and surprisingly enough the other mare came right up to her as though they were old friends and not only acquaintances. How thick could an Azrein be? Had Sharsa been a more violent Azrein ending the other mare’s life wouldn’t be a problem. In fact it was still kind of tempting right now. Watching the very base of Menel’s throat Sharsa was glad she had pretended to be shy before. Her gaze could easily be read as that. A noise made her look up in the entryway of the stable she saw a blanket just inside. A foal? Since when had the winged freak gotten a mate? A part of Sharsa was offended. It was just the luck of the stupid goody-hooves to find a mate have foals and have a perfectly happy little life. Sharsa wanted to stamp the foal into the ground while Menel watched. Wouldn’t that just be great? After all did the world need more human loving Azrien like the little one was doomed to be? The answer to that was clearly no.

Following Sharsa’s gaze Alu-lote noticed her daughter. Turning back to face the blank faced mare she wasn’t surprised. It must be a shock to come back and see little ones. It had only been a few months after all. “Well I’m sure you’ve just seen my biggest surprise I have to tell you. Still hello and welcome Sharsa.” Gesturing with a wing Alu-lote invited the white mare inside. “We have some lovely apples and peaches on the trees right now. Feel free to help yourself. How have things been going for you?” Eyeing the other mare she noticed that Sharsa still looked a little underfed. Well she supposed that maybe her judgment was skewed since she lived in a place where food was always available and she never had to fight or flee. The other mare seemed to jerk herself away from looking at Losa. Alu-lote felt a bit bad. Had Sharsa ever lost a foal? It didn’t seem right to ask. “You know if you’d like I’m sure Losa would love to talk to you. She can be a bit shy, but she’s very sweet.”

The blanket slipped off Losa as she tried to stand up again. Her blue and purple mane had small knots in it and she seemed a bit disheveled. She squinted in the light at the mare her mother was talking to. The white mare had a dark thick thing on her neck. Other than that she had a few markings but was a plain white with a silver mane and tail. Losa’s mother was cheery and seemed to be smiling, while the strange mare kept her head down. Losa could see yellow eyes staring at her and shivered. There was simply something dark about the other mare that Losa didn’t understand. “Mom who’s that?” Taking a wobbling step forward out of the threshold Losa managed to stay on her feet. She was personally proud of her accomplishment. After all her brother was a stronger and faster learner than her. It irked her to no end.

Such an untrusting little glare. Sharsa was tempted to roll her eyes when she glanced back the filly. The little one at least had more sense than to trust a stranger, unlike her lack-wit mother. Must be the influence of father; I had better watch out for that one. He could be some form of trouble. Stepping inside Alu-lote’s yard. No that’s not right. This is the human’s home and is only keeping Alu-lote here. True Azrein have no human built home like this place so clearly was. “You know I-I’m not very good with little ones…” Tossing her head casually to the side she surveyed the rest of the yard. No signs of the father, human or any others. “You only have the one cute little girl?” Sharsa smiled at Alu-lote. Before Alu-lote had lived with the filthy human alone, now the place smelled of more Azrein. Where were the others and how long would Sharsa have alone with the air head and the little spawnling?

“Losa this is Sharsa she is a friend of mine.” Speaking slowly and clearly for her daughter Alu-lote gestured with a wing at Sharsa. “Now come and say hello.” Beaming Alu-lote watched as Losa was taking her first unassisted steps forward. She made no comment and offered no praise other than a smile. She knew how hard Losa had been practicing and would keep practicing until she could show her older brother how good she got. Until then anything said would only irritate her daughter. She instead looked back at Sharsa and answered her questions. “Oh come now I’m sure you’d do just fine with Losa.” Swishing her tail Alu-lote turned while she thought. “Now my only other child, her brother. He’d be tougher to handle. He’s very nice, but he won’t hold anything back if he thinks something is wrong.” Noticing Sharsa looking around she laughed. “Sadly Valerio and his father aren’t here at the moment. I’m afraid you would have to wait for a while if you want to catch them.” Moving along Alu-lote walked over to her daughter and nosed her softly. She didn’t say anything, but she was so proud of her baby girl. She mentally was bragging to Reoakee and felt her bonded’s irritation at being interrupted while in the midst of a good book in town. Chuckling to herself Alu-lote headed into the stable to drag out the apples she had picked earlier.
