I've not played any of the Dragon Quest Games, but this is seems to be a good series I need to pick up on. It does really feel like you are facing a boss. Low pitches really help set the mood that this is a serious fight. I quite enjoy it. Edit: Forgot to add the part where I love the fast pace that it sets helps it too. 9/10

Time for Pokemon! Heart Gold and Soul Silver gave us some of the best themes in Pokemon games. Ho-oh Battle is a personal favorite of mine.

Well what do ya' know, me and FEF have a lot in common, Pokemon Gold is to what FE5 is to me, that is to say is my favourite Pokemon entry in the series.

Although this composition starts off calm and peaceful, keeping in mind that this is supposed to be battle music, it goes into a simply fantastic theme after the percussion entry. I also greatly loved the Asian influence to it, as Ho-oh is based in an Asian town. The percussion line seemed rather undermined, drawn out, and not so organized, seeing as there was such a fabulous melody to be showcased.

Because I was so attracted to the melody, I must rate this song high- 8.5/10.

oh no Ishtar quoted me in a positive light whatever will i do aaahhh...
You silly guy. Don't worry about that. I'm glad you used it!

And I guess reusing themes from the other thread is fair game, since Roy brought back that kickass Zero song...

Great idea bringing this thread over to FEF. Let me get back into it...

This is a very fun son that bring to mind image of a bustling waterside town. Appropriate given the title, of course. It's upbeat and pleasant with a toe-tapping beat. The eastern instrument sounds used give it a unique and fun feeling while grounding it in a world we know. It feels like a familiar place, even if I have never played the game. It's not the most mind-boggling piece ever, but it is most certainly good, and well worth an 8/10.

Forest's Requiem from Golden Sun, by Motoi Sakuraba

Golden Sun. <3

Forest's Requiem isn't my end-all, be-all favorite track from the game (though I do like it a lot, don't me wrong!), but this song has a lot going for it, particularly in its atmospherics. The use of the woodwind instruments, particularly the prominent pan flute really work wonders. The... what sounds like a xylophone to me, starting around 0:46, helps add a mystical whimsy to a song that really emphasizes that this forest is magical, but mysterious. It really brings an ethereal forest to mind, perhaps one filled with dense mist and fog, where anything could be hiding.

I'm not really sure what this game is about, but it's a battle theme and from the title I suspect special battle theme. It's a very short theme at that. It does sound intense, which for battle themes usually is a good thing. I do like those emphasized beasts. I wish I knew more about the game to really give a better thought, but I still like the song. 8/10

Though for a game I put as my least favorite game in the series, Apollo Justice had a few good things going for it. Phoenix Wright no longer being a butt monkey and Klavier Gavin. So for the attorney/rockstar Klavier how about some Guilty Love.
PostPosted: Tue Dec 27, 2011 11:54 am

I like it, it's got a nostalgic feel and it's catchy~ 9/10

The song that's played in the royal castle in Legend of Dragoon is probably my favorite video game song ever, it's just so elegant compared to royal songs from other games- in other games the music in castles sucked so much I'd rush to get out, but in Dragoon I'd intentionally take my time and stick around XD

Well whaddya know, I was just now playing Legend of Dragoon for the first time in years. I love that game in all of its unique and cheesy glory. This isn't my favorite song of the game, but it is a good one. It fits the detailed and unusual castles that LoD brings us to, and is a different sort of castle theme than many that I know. Though even though it is a good piece through and through, and I really like the song's key and little piano bits, it does lack a certain "oomph," and it doesn't leave nearly as much an impression on me as the visuals that accompany it. I just beat Lenus at the Twin Castle in Fletz, so I heard this music a lot in the last few hours of play. I just didn't think it suited the visuals as well as some other songs in the game do. Though admittedly, it suits Albert's castle a bit more. Then again, LoD is a rough-and-tumble feeling game, if you know what I mean. It is very much it's own beast, and I don't feel like comparing it to other games and standards really works as well. I guess I'll give this piece a 7/10. Though a lot of it seems like personal preference.

And if you hate most castle themes, I seriously hope you aren't talking about Dragon Quest castle themes, since that series has a lot of good ones. At least, in my opinion. If you don't like them, you are allowed.

And Mallow, Forest's Requiem isn't my most favorite song of Golden Sun either, but I don't want to take out the bigger guns right at the beginning! Those are for later!

And since I talked about castle themes, I guess I'll post one now.

Majestic Castle- Gavotte de Chateau From Dragon Quest VIII by Koichi Sugiyama.

(For those who don't know, the Dragon Quest VIII symphonic suite was used in the western release of the game, so I'm in the clear on this one as far as I can see).

Ah Dragon Quest VIII...so glad I am getting into this game. I don't think I am this far enough to have gotten to this area, so knowing a song like this is nice out there. I definitely feel like I am moving through a castle with this theme. You did a nice job on picking this one. Dragon Quest is definitely becoming one of my favorite games, and its music is on that way as well. 8/10

Diggin' this DQ trend, as for this particular piece: what I enjoy about it is the overload of brass, in which the classical interpretation of a battle track is usually brass and percussion in which this track had. The strings are there, which is just a Sugiyama thing to do like it or not, I like it, it adds suspense. Although VIII is not in the God Tier of main title DQ games in my personal tier list, I can't deny how nice the NA soundtrack of it is (let's... not go into details of the JP version, Sugiyama synthetics <<<<<<<<< Sugiyama orchestra IMO)

Although there were a couple of obvious Sugiyama formulae in there such as the descending string line to add colour in the meat of the song, as well as the opening to this track, which is just tradition of him to use some sort of scale to begin the tracks (or in IV, to a thirds, descending line to begin), it still does a bang on job nailing what a battle should sound like.

EDIT: Forgot to rate, I'm a bad person. ninja 8/10

Continuing the trend, we have... True Evil ~ Malroth - a rearrangement from the Dragon Warrior II's final boss, but in Dragon Quest IX by Koichi Sugiyama
PostPosted: Tue Dec 27, 2011 3:50 pm

Hmm... The brass sounds really nice. A lot of the songs in DQ IX were orchestrated in the NA version, weren't they? They did a good job keeping to the basics of the original song, but... I dunno. Something's missing from it for it to be really amazing. 9/10

Satan from DQ V, remade for DQ IX, by Koichi Sugiyama. Keeping the DQ trend going.

It has been a long time since I last played DQV, which I will have to play sometime sooner or later to continue my Dragon Quest LP marathon going on. For this particular theme, I felt as though it wasn't Sugiyama's best. Although it does follow the brass and percussion rule I described earlier, it was rather uncomfortably slow.
The slowness of this composition can be seen as suspense- in which IIRC, in-game the final boss is quite confrontational, versus Midenhall's group in DQII's "GOD OUTTA NOWHERE!" experience where they were obviously ill prepared to face Malroth, thus suspense worked in that piece well. I heard some Baramos at the very start of the song with the whole explosive note chord, as well as the bobbing low brass notes reminded me of The Dragonlord, and the flute- final form Necrosaro which isn't a bad thing at all, just something a DQ purist like me takes note of. xD
However, there were some great parts in that piece I simply adored. I loved the ascending brass line that is featured late on which seemed like a break from all the DU DU DU DU'ing, it gives the impression of the hero fighting the best he can, and Nimzo is obviously getting it handed to him at that point, as well as the DU DU DU line itself is a nice feeling of what a final boss should be.
Although it did have a fair share of short comings, the brass is just too good not to like in DQIX's sound quality. This gets a 6.8/10

In response to the Castle discussion with Tiki and Bahamut, I present to you's all: Rondo from Dragon Warrior III (NES) by Koichi Sugiyama

**NOTE: - for the next person, you don't have to listen to the entire song, obviously, just until you get the feel for the song. Sorry, it's the only NES version I could find on Youtube, and Tudou is loading really slowly for me right now for some reason...

First, I gotta address the previous song. I love the final boss theme of V, Satan. But that proclamation comes with a big fat asterisk. This song, perhaps more so than much of Sugiyama's other works (VIII's soundtrack has a different story behind it, Like Ishtar said, let's not talk about that), must be heard when performed by an orchestra. All of the synth versions I have ever heard completely miss the dynamics and contrast that make the song work. If I was able to judge the orchestral verision, I wouldn't give it a straight 10 or anything, because it still is rather understated and lacks a lot of the intimidation and hugeness that other DQ boss themes have. I think the composition just has not been treated kindly by the synth transition, and that's something I feel I have to say as a Sugiyama fan.
I have a snippet from Ballet Dragon Quest on my profile. It plays there, and it is used for the big bad's underlings rather than the big bad himself. There's also a great rendition of Requiem and Small Shrine (Both are pieces from DQIII that I think could use a little more love) in there. I invite fellow VG music nerds to check it out.

And speaking of DQIII, Rondo is one of my favorite castle themes in the series. It's a short little tune that covers a lot of ground. It starts out feeling regal and welcoming, then conjures up images of increasing size as the key changes and we get those rising scales. And I'd be lying if I didn't mention that I am nostalgic for it. Dragon Warrior III was my introduction to the series, and I am a huge nostalgia nut for its' soundtrack. But don't interpret that to mean that the soundtrack is bad. On the contrary, I like it a lot when I separate myself from it too. It's one of my favorites all together. And I give this theme an 8/10. Leaning on 9.

Oh hell yes, keep that DQ train a-rollin'! I guess I'll post a DQV song that I think translated better into synth.

Yeah. I don't know much of Dragon Quest, only picked up IV the other day and haven't started it yet because Oops I'm still playing Chrono Trigger. It does, however, work nicely as synth. It sets a mood well and the 'instruments' all work together quite harmoniously. It's... I don't know, though, something about it doesn't quite ring out to me as my favorite song ever? But it is good. I do like it.

if I really have to add a number, sigh :B
8/10

I could probably link Wild ARMS: 2nd Ignition songs forever. Here's one of at least two songs for the towns and cities. You get either this or Town to the Western Winds most of the time, with this being the more... energetic, I think. The other is more gentle or soothing. And in case you can't tell, yeah, it's a sort of wild west-ish setting, so. :P

And I realize the tracks are short, but that's how they apparently come on the OST discs, so...

Well it has a nice sound to it I'll give it that. It is a bit repetitive but since I don't know when this game come out I can give it a little of a break, hell I like Theme of Tara despite it being the same exect thing for about 3 min. Despite its slight repetitivness I enjoy how it changes from the start to the middle and goes back to how it was at the start.

I am very bad at trying to reveiw music. But I liked it and give it a 7/10.

Very atmospheric. The vocals help back up the music, which seems to imply a scene of chaos and destruction. The swelling bass instruments really help tie it all together. I honestly know next to nothing about Berserk and nothing about this game, whether this is a cutscene song or a battle song, but it's really impressive and I'd totally dig any scene in a game that had this music with it. 8/10.

Last time I link Wild ARMS: 2nd Ignition music for now, I swear. I will drool over another game next post. XD
