Remarque waved his hand nonchalantly; he was good with names and faces, if only because it always made a good impression and was useful when dealing with customers. He held no grudge against Virtus’ slipping of the name; he assumed a lot had gone on in the male’s life recently. “If the wraith gets hit, it can break. Or so I’ve been told, I’m not actually speaking from experience. But it’s not like I’m encouraging you to go test it out and see if it’s true. If your wraith breaks, you lose all the energy you collected, and then it’s just a whole big waste of time and everyone will make fun of you for being incompetent and you’ll piss Ares off for making her waste her energy to get you a new wraith. But no pressure,” Jett concluded, teasing smirk on his lips.

As they passed an alley, he craned his neck to see in the darkness; there wasn’t any sign that anyone was even down there to drain energy from, so he kept walking. “I haven’t heard of anyone losing their wraith, so I don’t think it’s something you’re really going to have to worry about unless you’re a complete dolt.” Remarque glanced at Virtus over his shoulder. “…You aren’t, right?”

Virtus nodded his head, smiling brightly. Whatever worry he felt had been cured, it seemed, and he was certain he would keep his wraith safe. Even if that word felt a little too heavy handed for him. He'd call it something else, and that would be just fine.

He did not seem trouble by the negative explanation he was getting about things, either. He had no intention of pissing anyone off, or waisting anyone's energy, in either sense.

"Don't worry, I don't think the pressure is that bad! Thank you for explaining it to me, though, I'll make sure to keep my wraith safe, then. I wouldn't want it to break, or to upset anyone. So I'll just have to do my best to do things right." He nodded his head thoughtfully.

When Remarque asked him if he was a complete dolt he smiled again and that seemed to be his answer. He thought that was just a joke, but it wasn't polite not to answer questions sent his way, and he often had a tough time distinguishing what was and wasn't sarcasm.

So he had to assume nothing was, to be safe.

"I'm not! Not as far as I know, anyway. But if you start to think I am, I'll fix it. I just want to do good for the team!"

Though Remarque was totally confident he was looking at a male perhaps only a few months different in age from himself, he felt like he was having a conversation with a child. Though he hadn’t been particularly polite during any bit of this conversation, Virtus had responded politely and didn’t seem to react at all to Remarque’s rudeness. It almost wasn’t even fun. He wasn’t sure if he could chip at Virtus’ enthusiastic good nature if he’d tried—and he figured that Virtus was having a hard enough time settling in with this new lifestyle already with all his worrying about scaring someone.

He just nodded to the male and continued walking forward, sticking his head down another alley.

This time, he was far more fortunate—a slightly older man looked to be sleeping, half emptied bottle of some obscure alcohol loosely hanging from his fingers. Remarque paused and, this time with a smile on his face, turned to face Virtus. “Jackpot. You can’t get an easier target,” he said, gesturing towards the snoozing man. “Go ahead. I’m feeling generous, so I’ll let you get this one. Do you want to go ahead and do this yourself, or do you need some sort of demonstration before you give it a try?” he prompted, now actually trying to be a bit more helpful and not just discretely poke fun at the male.

Virtus was certainly good at taking the fun out of teasing him, mostly because he didn't understand that he was being teased, most of the time. Or maybe he did understand it, but he chose not to rise to it and justified with himself that the person teasing him must have had a good reason for it.

It was all in good fun. Why should he be upset by something like that?

It was going to be a very strange adjustment for him, by all outward appearances, to adjust to having to drain energy and hurt people to accomplish the tasks he was asked to do. But Virtus was the kind of guy who did as he was told, no matter what. He did not realize that he was hurting others, sometimes, when he was so focused on helping someone else. And his Queen had helped him, had saved Navi, and so he would do anything she asked.

he would just have to figure out how.

"I think I might need some help. Can you show me? I'll follow everything you do!" he said, telling himself that this would be the last lesson he would ever need, and he would totally get it next time, on his own, no help required. Totally. At least he was optimistic, and that got him through things that should have been difficult and tiring.

Remarque cast Virtus a look, but nodded in a good natured manner. “All right,” he said; he didn’t mind doing a demonstration. He had learned from Requiem and had summoned a wraith enough times to feel comfortable teaching someone how to do the same. As he walked down the alleyway, he kept his steps light to prevent waking up their target. When he was nearby, he extracted his mirror shard and flashed it to Virtus, as if it were some sort of explanation.

The man in front of them snored loudly, though gave no indication of waking up in the near future. Remarque took the opportunity to instruct Virtus in a slightly hushed tone. “You pull this out, and focus—to draw the wraith out. It might be weird or seem hard at first, but it’ll come to you, you just have to focus.”

Extending his arm, he held out the shard and waited for a little over a second before a wraith slipped out. It required no direction, just lifted its head for a moment, regarded Remarque and Virtus, and then scampered to the snoring man. Remarque, satisfied with the wraith, turned to Virtus. “Easy as that. And when you’re done, you just call it back and send it on its merry way. Not scary at all—he’s still sleeping like a baby.”

Virtus smiled, oblivious to any ill feelings or anything else being sent his way. He was having fun, and looking forward to seeing how to use the wraith effectively. He was not too good at fighting on his own, and any lesson that was being offered to him would surely help him.

He would have to make it up to Remarque some time, certainly.

He stayed quiet.

He got his mirror shard out, looking at it thoughtfully. To him, it looked like it was shaped a little like a heart. But of course, that was just him being generous and a little optimistic in the way he saw things. As per usual.

Focus. He could do that. Not now, of course, because he would probably mess something up, but he would try later as directed. He watched as the creepy looking thing came from Remarque's mirror and hurried to the sleeping man, passing through him and not seeming to cause any pain. that was good.

Virtus didn't have it in him to hurt.

"That's good! I think I understand. Thank you for showing me!"

Remarque nodded; he figured if Virtus wanted to give it a go, himself, he’d have tried summoning his wraith. As it were, the one he called out seemed to be doing a fine job of sucking out the man’s energy. Though it felt like much longer, only a few seconds passed as the thing sapped up what energy it could. It returned to Remarque’s mirror shard, perhaps because it noticed Remarque getting annoyed at it taking so long, or perhaps because it understood it had drawn in more than enough energy for now.

“Not a problem,” Remarque said, waiting for the wraith to climb back into the shard before he tucked it away. Virtus seemed useless if he couldn’t at least drain energy. If Virtus was worried about hurting or scaring someone, Remarque doubted Virtus would be of any help in a battle. He wasn’t sure what else he could teach the male, though didn’t want to be rude and just leave him there, so he casually approached the topic, “So, you think you’ve got it all worked out? You gonna be all right if I head out and run some errands and leave you to keep up the energy draining around here for the night?”

Virtus smiled brightly at the idea. He took it as if Remarque was putting his faith in Virtus to do his duty well. Clearly this was so, Remarque wouldn't have asked, right?

"I think I can handle it! Thank you very much for all your help! You seem to be very good at all this, and that's wonderful! I'm lucky to have run into you, I think." He chuckled and offered his hand.

He was a very nice guy, for all his stupidity and awkwardness.

So he was inept as a fighter. At least he had good manners?

"Hopefully we will meet again! I promise I'll do well here, and gather up a lot of energy for you and for our queen!" He really wanted to prove himself, after all, but most of all he just wanted to help. This was his duty, and he would fulfill it, no questions asked. He knew he was doing something other people saw as wrong, but they were entitled to their opinions.

He wouldn't fault them for it: everyone had to fight for what they believed in.

“Sounds like a plan,” Remarque said, giving a curt nod. He moved his hands to his hips, and gave one last survey of the area. “All right. Well, you take care of yourself, got it? If you’ve ever got a problem or need help, go ahead and give me a call. I’ll be around,” he promised.

Virtus, for as good a guy as he seemed to be, seemed like he could be the type to get into a hell of a lot of trouble if he ever got into a fight, and even if Remarque was questioning how he got into the Dark Mirror Court, that didn’t mean he was going to abandon him if he ever got into a pinch.

And, anyway, Remarque was always looking for trouble.

“Anyway, have a good night. See you later.” He offered one little wave and figured that was a good enough note to leave on; with his offer, he turned and started off.
