The assistant beamed at him, "You had a few close calls, but overall you did really well, Before. And Killzone will be so happy that you liked his pie, it's new recipe you know." Clarice's smile became slightly...awkward. This wasn't something she agreed with, but it was typical of the doctor to transfer the one trainee who actually seemed to like the Life Division out of it. Likely just to see if the young man in question had a fun reaction and play combo breaker with the mist girls.
She sighed, and then held out a white box containing his new Mist coat. "A really, really good job, with that tower, which is why...I think you'll do alright from here on out. I just wanted to make sure you'd be able to keep up with their pace."

At first, all Before could focus on was the praise and Clarice's face. He accepted the coat without looking at it too closely, eyes tapered into joyful slits as he hugged the article of clothing to his chest as if it were the most precious thing in the world. "I'd like to meet Killzone! If they can make that awesome pie, well, they must be totes awesome too! Are they in Life Division?" he asked, still giddy and excited and just plain happy. It was the happiest he had ever been since Awakening.
"I'll do my very best to keep up with the other Intermediate Li-" mid-sentence, Before decided to look at his new coat. As in really look at his new coat. "-fers. Clarice? D-do our symbols change with each promotion?" he asked. The smile was still on his face, but it was uncomfortable and obviously forced while his brows were knitting together in confusion.
Before did not understand why he was holding a Mist coat. Did they not have a Life coat in his size? Was he supposed to make do with this one in the meantime?

Taking a deep breath, Clarice did her best to put a good face on the change, "No, Before. You've been promoted to an Intermediate Mist Hunter." She placed a hand on his shoulder, "I know you liked the Life Division, but this is not a bad move for you. It means that you have the potential to be good at a lot of different things, and Aria is a much better leader than H. When she's here, she'll give you the right kind of attention, and not the mean kind that you always get from him."
She paused to try and come up with other good points, though personally, she felt that getting to replace H with Aria as a leader was like a goddamn dream come true. "And there's lots of pretty girls in Mist! Like Candace, and Cassandra, and Tika! They'll probably be really relieved to see a new guy Mistie who can handle himself well, right?"

But he had passed! He survived! Why was he being transferred? He liked it in Life. Sure H was a terrible human being but the man was brilliant and had impeccable charisma but it wasn't as if he was in the man's area of attention all the waking hours of the day. And he really, really liked being in Life. He was already starting to make a home for himself within his division.
"I. But. Why?" Was all Before could stammer out, still staring at the coat, the smile now completely gone and the good humor snuffed from his eyes. "W-wait! Candace!? W-we're going to be in the same division!?" he squeaked. Before had gone from confused, to upset, to downright horrified in the span of a few seconds. It was a wonder he wasn't wearing a brace from the emotional whiplash he was going through.

The blonde's expression grew serious, "Before, if you have issues with her work them out. The transfer was the doctor's decision, and since Aria didn't try to reverse it, it's pretty much final. So you will be in the same division as Candace and you will need to deal with whatever problems you have with your division mates. It's just like with the pendants, you just need to try and confront it...and understand the underlying principle of the the thing, the Candace, and how it...she functions. Or just beat her up a bit. That's what I did."
This was getting off track, though. "Look," she continued, "...your placement in Life wasn't your decision in the first place. You never got a real choice in the matter. The Mist touches on the functions of all the other hunter divisions. It's like a...a...division buffet. So, get a taste of what else you can do as a hunter, and then, if you still want to be in the Labs as a Life hunter, we'll make it happen. It'll be your choice. Okay?"

Teal eyes simply stared up at Clarice, as if asking why he was even being transferred to begin with. But as she said, it was Doctor H's decision and it was final. Whatever feeling of triumph and happiness this moment should be bringing was killed. Had it not been for JOY number 5, Before might actually feel the desire to cry. But the concoction was cancelling out any notion to run away with tears streaming down his cheeks the way some of those tv soap opera heroines would upon being rejected by their love interest.
Instead he let his bangs fall into his eyes, and muttered a soft, "O-okay, thanks for everything you've done for me, Clarice. I-I really appreciate it," before nodding and hurrying out of the training grounds.
