Magnetite watched for a moment, calculating. This guy was either leading him into a trap, or was trading energy for this girl. Otherwise, why let him know of better targets?
Magnetite figured it wasn’t a trap, he’d come over here ready for a fight to stop him from taking this girls energy, not a good way to inspire trust. So this girl must be something to this... kid.
Which might make her a good bargaining chip in the future, but there was no need for that now. He didn’t need anything from the kid today, and more importantly, stood to gain from a different action.
"Fine. I guess I owe you anyway after that incident with the child."
He shrugged.
"She’s all yours for your.... whatever it is you want with her pleasure."
He took a step back.
"Both of you have a lovely evening; perhaps I'll see you around."
He turned, watching the pair as he made his way to leave.

Candice was still sitting on the ground, pouting as the weirdly clothed man with an oddly large forehead was lecturing her. She definitely wanted to say something back to him... Something snappy, but was getting too tired to do so. Instead, she hugged her book back that was filled with her medical books... Something she felt was more precious to her than her own safety at the moment.
She walked as the mustache man walked away. Once he was gone, she looked back at the forehead man still standing there. Her eyes were still droopy and her attitude... Still unhappy. "What do you want? Anything but my books..."
Using one hand to push her off the ground while the other was hugging her book bag, eventually she lifted herself off the ground. "Want... to... go... home... now... please?"

Remarque watched after Magnetite for a moment longer; he was glad he didn't have to fight to make sure Candice was all right and, once convinced that the Negaverser was gone, he just huffed and shook his head.
"No, I don't want your books. What are you doing out so late?" he asked, seeming much more conversational and relaxed now that Magnetite was gone. Remarque seemed a little on edge--paranoid that someone was going to attack or something, and continued to speak even as he glanced over his shoulder. "...It's dangerous. And you look ready to pass out anyway. How far from here do you live?"

"I.... I was studying at school. Too many books... Too many things to remember." Candice was very much determined to be ahead of her class. She was aiming to graduate at the top, and early if she could. The study... It was sometimes a little bit too much, but she couldn't help herself.
She looked around her, rubbing her eyes. Candice wasn't sure why yet another random dude wanted to help her home, but... at least this one wasn't touching her at the moment. It took her a little while to place where she was again. "Home is... that way," she said as she pointed straight in front of them.
"So the other man said... He wanted to find his family...." Candice stood there, hugging her books and swaying a little bit. "Why do you want to help lil' ol' me?"

"Honestly?" Remarque paused for a moment, considering her question as he looked at her. He nodded with his head, gesturing for her to start walking towards her home. "I don't want to help you. But I'd rather give you five minutes of my time than read about you dead in the papers tomorrow. You probably have people that care about you that'd be pretty pissed off if something bad happened to you. And you can't tell me that school is worth dying for, so come on. Let's get you home. I'll walk you part of the way to make sure that guy doesn't come back, all right?" he prompted. He didn't really wait for an answer. "...And you like you're about to pass out on your feet. Do you want help carrying something or are you going to try hit me with your bag, too, if I get too close?"
...He would so rather carry some of her books for her now than have to carry her if she passed out from fatigue. Even if it did make him look like a big dolt in front of her--and anyone that might see them.

"No... No... I'll hold my books..." Candice brought them even closer to her chest, if that was possible. It seemed like she was very much just hugging them and walking half-asleep. Although tired, she was registering about half of what they were talking about.
She didn't notice it, but she started to tear up when the man started to talk about people that cared and her death. Even tired, she knew that there were people, but how about all those other people out there? "There... are too many people that can't afford doctors... They're dying too and no one would care about their death... Their deaths would not be in the newspapers... But I care..."
Candice was swaying with each step, but she knew that each step would bring her closer to home and a warm comfy bed so she kept going.

Remarque hesitated for a moment--he could see Candice swaying on her feet, and though she had attacked Magnetite with much energy, he still doubted she had much left. "All right," he said slowly, and had to force himself not to reach out a hand to steady her.
Sure, there was the part of him that kind of wanted her to fall and scrape her knees just so he could laugh, but who but him would be around to see it? And what would it gain?
...And Candice was a good girl, so it's not like he really wanted her to fall.
"Well, if you care, you have to take more care of yourself, all right? Don't go walking around so late when you're tripping all over yourself. You're lucky I was here. If that guy had gotten to you--do you have any what would have happened?" he asked, stern but not angry.
He'd done good to keep his distance so far, but as Candice's step grew less and less sturdy, his concern grew--just a bit.
"Here," he huffed under his breath, holding out a hand for her. "...If you fall and break your head, who out there is going to care for those people that can't take care of themselves? Let me help you."

Candice nodded when she heard Remarque's words. It wasn't that she wasn't listening, but it also wasn't that she was. At the moment, she fully understood what he said, but the next morning was definitely a gamble in which if she would remember or not, either partially or none at all.
"He said... he... needed... directions." She let out another yawn and she dragged herself up the street, slowly approaching her apartment building. "Shouldn't someone help him too....?"
Of course, even with that statement, she didn't really know that she had been in trouble. She didn't know that she was possibly that much closer to dying. Again. "But-but... Thank you for helping..." Eventually she looked up at a building and noticed that it was the shape of hers. Eyes half closed, she pointed up.
"This is it!" One of her hands slipped out from hugging her books and wanted to shake the man's hand. "Thank you for helping. Name is... is... Candice."

Remarque bit his tongue to resist from responding, 'I know'. He instead took her hand, shook it, and said, "It's nice to meet you, Candice. I'm Remarque. Now, go inside before you pass out. If I run into you again, let's hope it's not because you're in any sort of danger."
He dropped her hand and glanced towards the building. "Have a good night. Don't push yourself too hard, Candice," he added, sounding a bit gruff.

Candice shook his hand rather slowly and then went to fish out her keys from her pocket. She nodded at him and then gave him a smile. "Thank you for helping me out, stranger!"
It was sort of half meant as a joke, since she knew his name now, but hey... Memory is a cruel thing when you're half asleep. She waved one last time at Remarque and then entered her apartment building. Candice walked straight towards the elevators and stepped into one after it opened.
Ding... Ding... Ding... Once the eight floor dinged, she stepped off and walked towards her apartment. Her mind was now just screaming 'home' and 'sleep', not really thinking about what had happened at all tonight. Once she got changed and climbed into bed, she was knocked out almost instantly.

Remarque lingered for only a moment; he watched as Candice entered the building, as if suspicious that someone was going to try and jump her the last few yards or her walk. She made it, safely, and yet it was almost hard to turn away from the building.
With a heavy sigh, he shook his head, ran his fingers through his hair, and decided that if he wanted to sleep easily tonight, he was going to need to get enough energy to compensate for what he'd given to Magnetite.
