What does holistic food mean?

Holistic food is supposed to have more natural ingrediants, like actual meat, and no grain meal. It is said to be healthier for animals.

Why is that holistic, though? The term is confusing to me.

Holistic means that you are focusing on the whole and not just the parts of the whole. Holistic brands have more ingrediants that try to give the animal a complete and whole diet. I don't think this word fits very well when describing pet food, but it is what the petfood stores/companies call it. I think that the word "holistic" is a another way for the brands to say "well-balanced", or "healthy". I also think that it is another way for them to say that their food is better than other brands, as in most commercials for food you hear how healthy it is but never the word holistic.Hope that helps? xp

Yeah, it does. So it's basically just a marketing term?

I think so, mostly you hear the word holistic when talking about medicine. When a person decides to use a holistic approach to healing they focus on the body as well as the mind. For example, some holistic methods of healing are a healthy diet, and yoga. Holistic methods try to treat the problem and not the symptoms (like medicine would).

Really? My cats are kind of picky like that too, especially with canned food. Except that they will lick off all the juice in the canned food and leave the food. xp

My cat eats a variety of foods. when she was a kitten, we started her off on 9 lives canned food and Meow mix dry food. Over time she's gone through friskies, fancy feast, and a few of the other really crappy brands.
Lately, I've been trying to get my mom to feed her better, but keep running into the issue with price. She doesn't think it's worth paying $1.70 per can of cat food since all the s**t brands are so cheap. So I've been searching to find a better brand with less filler and grains that's not as expensive as the Wellness CORE ($1.70). At least I've gotten my mom to feed her more raw foods, I suppose.

my cats usually get wellness since thats what i usually have coupons for but sometimes they get evo or some other higher quality food depending on whats cheapest at that time.

i also give raw chicken or turkey to my little lady cat once a week

my cat is addicted to chocolate pudding. any input?

My cat eats Purina Cat Chow, and whatever he catches. I've seen him eat mice before, and I have found half a rat before too. His momma loved rats, mice, squirrel and rabbit, so he hunts often like she used to.

He is an indoor/outdoor, one eyed, no clawed cat, and he hunts. He always comes and eats his entire bowl at least once a day though, but he is a skinny cat, but it is natural because his mom was like that too. He isn't malnourished and you cant see his ribs or anything. He burns off all of his food hunting, exploring and running away from my goats. Poor boy. The goats come and sniff him and he turns tail and runs as if they are trying to eat him. He and my dog also occasionally get some goat's milk after milking time if they are around.

My girly gets Friskies twice a day (a 1/3 scoop) and about 2.5 oz of Friskies wet food. On sundays, she gets the pouched whiskas seafood chunks and she usually licks the bowl clean. smile It seems like she eats alot but she spends most of the time running around like her arse is on fire and she burns up alot of calories through playing.

Id love to try a holistic grain free food with her (shes a med hair and I heard that grain free food helps with skin/fur quality) but the 13 to 14 bucks for a 3.5 pound bag isnt really within my budget. I buy the 7 pound friskies for 8 bucks and it lasts 2 months. If they made it cheaper, Id buy it. And ive heard of raw meat diets for cats, which seems like itd break the bank even more, and was curious, if your just feeding them the raw meat, how are they getting the nesseary vitamins and nutrients that a cat needs to develop and grow? And be healthy? Im not saying Im feeding her the pristine food (it is, after all friskies) and Im not interested in swithcing to a raw meat, but isnt too much protein bad for cats?

In the wild, they'd be eating raw meat, organs and bones and little to no plant matter, so feeding them a diet consisting of raw meat, bones and organs is actually the best and most ideal way to feed them. If I had the freezer space and the money for it, I'd be feeding raw, but since I don't, I'm feeding them Orijen. I do suggest that when you can afford to, increase the food quality you're feeding your cat to a much better brand, such as blue buffalo (grainless lines), Wellness (canned or the grainless line, Core), Acana (grainless lines), or Orijen for example.

My cats all get 2 pouches of Whiskas simply steamed twice a day, fish in the morning and meat in the evening. then throughout the day they have vitacat senior biscuits, all of them love it, its a lot easier for them to eat and keeps them very healthy. sometimes when we run out of pouches, we give the tuna sachet and diced chicken. The old man sometimes has rice witch his chicken and a bit of gravy.

That's why I said when you can afford it. smile I do understand that right now you can't. It's more expensive because of the ingredients they use. It does stink that the better quality foods are so much more expensive than the low quality foods.. I do wish they were cheap enough that everyone could afford them...
