Sweet Sally what did this ghoul do for fun. Mort laughed a little because it was so incredible to think that anyone could be so sheltered.

So thought the boil who thought his adopted mother could do no wrong because she gave him sweets and hugs. Ghouls always gave the best hugs. He wondered if Taryn gave good hugs . . . Judging by her chest, probably as soft as, say, Xiu's or Belladonna's.

"We fix, yiss," Mort stated with a little grin, gesturing for her to follow as he waded his way through several shirts to the couch that was before the tv. Plastered on its side was a familiar medal Taryn might recognize from a certain ghostly general. The zombie stood over his available systems, pondering. "Mrrr . . . Start easy. Go with Scario Kart." Mort picked up the appropriate box and set it into the game system, nabbing both wireless controllers before he flopped on the three-seat, stained, second-hand couch; it creaked under his weight despite being rather skinny.

"Is very easy. R-Race, go fast fast fast. Lotsa powers. Shells stop others, star make 'vincible, shrooms m-make go vrooooooom. Easier play than say."

Would you look at that... it seemed Mort had been at the haunted house too. Strange that she hadn't seen him...

"Oh?" Taryn really had to start paying more attention to the boil than his room. She felt like she was missing important information. The ghoul turned once again to what she hoped was a new friend and then looked to the television. Scario Cart? She thought maybe she'd heard of that one before. She sat carefully beside Mort on the furthest cushion, afraid they both might break the couch, and held her hand out for the controller. It looked like a terrifying alien weapon, really... "Alright..."

Jack, it was almost adorable how timid she was about video games. Imagine the reactions when one day Mortimer created virtual reality simulations! It was one of his many, many goals for later life, assuming he got any better at "tech-ing" as he so called it. Once Taryn was in possession of the controller, he chuckled and pat her head a few times, as if to say "Silly ghoul!" "Will be fine. Put easy on first!"

After a chorus of "SCARIO KART: DOUBLE DASH!!" from the skellyvision, peppy music began to play. Mort selected the basic track (an elongated oblong) and brought them to the character selection screen; without fail, all characters and karts were unlocked. "Can pick first~" he told Taryn with a grin. "Need two characters. All has diff'rent s-special power. Like scarelings," - he pointed out the younger versions of Scario and his brother - "has big chomper, e-eats er'thing. Or Princess Screech n' Princess Ivy, m-make barriers 'gainst items."

But now Mort was just rambling, so he just gestured for Taryn to take charge. "Pick whoever two, n-not have to be n' same pairs like examples."

Taryn could only blink at the loading screens. So this was video games, huh? Race around a track and throw things at each other? Well, Mort thought it was fun so she'd give it a try. She turned to her new friend as he half-explained character use and then nudged the joystick. ...oh! Oh, she'd gone too far, hold on--

It took Taryn a bit of time to select her characters and finally settled on the dark-haired princess (it really was nice hair) and the little green baby. The cart she picked was a pram, it seemed... that was good, right? She turned to Mort then to watch his undoubtedly amazing character-choosing skills.

In about three seconds, the selection screen was gone: Mort had already pre-decided pairs that counted in triple digits, a fact he did not proudly display to the lay man. This go around, he stuck it out with King Boo and Growlser, forcing him into a heavy-weight kart. As the screen split laterally (Mort's pair on top, Taryn's on bottom), an odd skeletal creature in a shell floated over, batty wings flapping. In its hands was a traffic light.

"You ready?" Mort asked, flashing her a grin.

The top two red lights lit up as a countdown meter appeared. 3! Two yellow lights. 2!

Green lights! 1!!

And off the racers went!

. . . Wait, did Mort forget to explain the controls to her in his excitement?
PostPosted: Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:14 pm

"That's a boo!" Taryn said, sounding surprised, "I met some of those! They must be in Halloween too, or el-- oh. Oh, sure." A countdown began and the ghoul prepared herself, bending forward slightly and readying her thumbs on the joysticks. Alright, she could do this, it was just a race--

...wait,how did she make her cart go? Mort was already off and she could only mash buttons wildly and giggle. Oh, there it was! Taryn sped up a little late and tried to gently steer herself around the curve, but without any practice she overcompensated and slid into the grass. "No, no, no, go back--!"

Mort was laughing genially as he glanced between their portions of the screen. "Whoops~ F-Forgot tell controls." Whether on purpose or not, he didn't sound terribly apologetic due to how amusing it was to watch her overcompensation and shouts at the skeevee.

Really, that was the joy of multiplayer games to him: not the actual winning necessarily (though it was nice), but the shouting, the antics, the sense of electricity between competitors. Actually . . . he hadn't had that feeling in a while. Gregory was a reluctant choice in player because he often smashed things when he grew angry. Funny the first few times, not so funny when the controller nearly pierces through the screen.

The large spiked kart wound backwards to accompany Taryn's veering one. "Hold A move forward, B for break n' reverse if hold, Y or X for use item," he explained at last, feeling a tad (a tad) bad for not mentioning this before. "Only can has one item on each character. Z switch who driving so c-can get 'nother item."

Maybe that was a bit much at once. Or maybe Taryn had a big brain and could absorb all of the information at top speed?

O3O If so, he would love to study such a brain in detail . . .
PostPosted: Tue Dec 13, 2011 6:01 pm

"Oh, alright..." Taryn mused, eyes narrowing. Alright, A... and B? Okay, okay, Y or X... X was more natural. Z was... where was Z? Z was right there...

The characters on the screen visibly went through the motions of every control, and then Taryn nodded. "Alright. You ready? Okay. ...ONETWOTHREEGO!" With a wild laugh, Taryn skidded away again and nearly left the curve again. No, no, no.. BRAKES. USE THE BRAKES! She skidded the edge of the road and shouted.

"Yes!" This was fun!

"Breakbreakbreak!" Mort yelled at key points, trying his best not to burst out laughing each time their karts criss-crossed. Both were about to be lapped by the NPCs, and there was the distinct sound of the skeletal bat from before hissing insults at their apparent stupidity. "N-Nice, got 'vincibility star!" the zombie exclaimed after Taryn ran through one of the item boxes. The item was almost always gifted to the slowest three players, the game's version of a pity party. "'Look familiar?" It looked distinctly like a version of the medal stuck on the side of the skelly-vision.

Actually, now that the ghoul pointed out said similarities . . . Well that was certainly an odd coincidence. o3o

Eventually, one lap was down for the two students! And everyone else was about three-quarters through to finishing their second. But the point was that Taryn's first experience with Scario Kart was a good one, and so far Mort felt like the deal was going through just fine.

"...woah..." Someone in Halloween knew what boos were... what had she never read about them?! Well, there was time later to analyze, right now was time to play!

"We're so far behind!" Taryn laughed, suddenly confident that she knew what that little map was for, "I'm sorry I'm making us lose." Out of curiosity, the ghoul bopped the X button and watched the outcome with curiosity. Shiny! "So now they can't get me? Or?"

"Yupyup! Hurry, not last long!" The track's theme music switched to a different ditty as Taryn's kart suddenly went glittery and multi-colored. Along with a sharp speed boost, most anything she touched for a short period of time was thrown off or destroyed; even Mort accidentally got a little too close in her path and was pushed back even further behind as the ghoul's pair sped off to cause more havoc; the violent, but cartoonish, animation of King Boo and Growlser having to reseat themselves on the flipped over kart made him bark in laughter, which was just enough to cover up their verbal obscenities as the video game characters got back on track.

"Is best with more people," Mort commented as the chimera sped over the finish line a second time - one lap left! A sped up version of the racetrack's theme began to play, as if eagerly awaiting the final results of the two freakishly slow combatants. "Can have, methinks . . . f-four on one system, eight going at same time."
PostPosted: Tue Dec 13, 2011 7:58 pm

"Oh, that's handy!"

So Taryn was discussing the game a little like a word problem, but what could you expect? She had some issues doing corners with the upped speed, and the picking-up of the game's soundtrack made Taryn's heart beat a little faster and her hands feel just a little more dumb. Her goal had become just to cross the finish line, not to cross it before Mort. What were the chances of beating an experienced gamer with her first-time fingers? "Go go go!"

"How many people have you played with at once?" she asked, trying to be polite while trying to concentrate on the track. Mort certainly seemed popular, after all.

Mort pondered over it, continuing the race at a pace between casual and somewhat competitive - while Taryn had gotten the speed boost, her swerving turns and need to break allowed him multiple chances to catch up. Now they were both on the final lap, halfway across, and several green shells were flying between them due to several item gets. Around the final curve, Mort snatched another and smirked as he received a red shell: the game's homing missile device upon the nearest player in rank.

To use or not to use? Hmmm . . . He glanced at Taryn and gave a rather large grin.

"Better huuuuuuurryyyyyyyyy~"

Taryn was having some serious issues dodging the shells, but her driving was erratic at best and made her something of a difficult target. When Mort spoke, though, she turned to him and veered even further from the middle of the track.

"...what?"

Mort had never told Taryn what each item did. She could assume that a shell was a projectile, but couldn't wrap her mind around what could be different in a red one. Even then, she didn't equate Mort's warning to his upgrade. She had no idea what he meant, in fact. The ghoul pressed the A button down harder as if it could somehow make her cart go faster.

Oh, Mort's grin was almost devious. "Mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr-" It almost melded with the sounds of the engines roaring, like a cat purring once it has cornered the mouse.

And then, surprisingly, he went the lazy cat route and eased off on the A button. Taryn zoomed ahead very much as though her efforts made it go faster, and in seconds flashed across the finish line. The zombie chuckled as, on its way down speed-wise, his kart crossed not longer after. Almost lazily, the item button was pressed just as he did so. While the skeletal bat waved the race flag to signal that all players had finished the course, Mort's red shell zoomed ahead, zig-zagging uncannily towards Taryn's victory-lapping kart until, just as the camera zoomed in on the "winner" (7th place winner?), the weapon forced both princess and baby skyward. With a less than graceful tumble, Princess Ivy shrieked a most unladylike curse, followed by the green baby smacking her in the head as he fell.

The controlled dropping in his lap, Mortimer leaned against the couch and began to laugh. "So worth it!"
