Robert paused, barely registering the nick she'd given him, and his face furrowed in confusion.

"A name?" That wasn't what all this was about, was it? Was he really fighting so hard to keep Roberta - Roberta? Was she really fighting so hard to be someone else?

Someone new?

Just like he'd done.

Well, s**t.

Robert's little revelation came with the added bonus that he felt much more comfortable hitting Reine, than he did Roberta. He blinked, rose his batleth to rest against the back of his arm, and performed a dazzling fouetté, his body lifting up to one single toe as he turned and turned, with Jezebel slashing into Reine with each turn.

.. Someone was getting fancy.

He'd hit her harder than she'd expected, and she reeled from the blow; at least, the way in which he'd done it was slightly amusing.

"I see you got over your unicorn phase, huh?" Steadying herself again, she hit out at him, managing to score a hit.

Robert started to rev up Jezebel, ready to send Reine into a blinded, deafened rage, when -

Unicorns?

He dropped Jezebel in mid-twirl, only to pick her up again - but it was too late, the Fear was gone.

"HEY. Don't. Don't talk about that." His voice trembled. "That ain't cool, kitten."

She took full advantage of the moment when he dropped his weapon, and threw herself at him, stabbing instead of slashing.

"What's wrong with bringing up the past? Heh- wait. It's not really the past, is it?"

Claws. Fists. Hands. Feet. Knees. Every single method of pain Reine could inflict on him, suddenly striking out at once-

Robert fell onto his back as she leapt upon him, and Jezebel clattered to the ground, before desummoning silently. She had nothing to say about this fight - Reine was a matter she refused to touch upon. She knew better.

Robert lifted his head, and looked up at her, before letting his head fall back down on the ground again.

"Okay, kitten." He mumbled, turning to look away. "You win. Again."

His voice had the sound of defeat, both physical, and emotional.

He was done.

"Sit up," she said, flopping down beside him. Alynthe was quickly desummoned, and the earrings dropped gently into her pocket. Reine sat cross-legged beside Robert's body, looking up at the sky.

"I'm not your Juliet, but I'll say this anyway: a rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Or as bitter, maybe, to you."

A long pause.

"What's this really about, to you, huh? Losing your 'best friend'? I thought about it, Robert. We were doing pretty okay until that night- you know what I'm talking about. I always blamed you for ruining things with Petra, but y'know, I should've left that up to her to begin with- it wasn't my decision to make."

She could forgive him, maybe, for trying to stuff her back in a pod. If she really wanted to. Reine knew- or she liked to think- that unless someone else decided to butt in, she had the upper hand, and she probably always had.

Until now, though, she'd never actually thought of abusing it.

It took a lot of effort, but Robert pushed himself up to rest on his elbows, which was as good as it was going to get until he caught his breath. He could hear her just fine from there, and he listened carefully. It felt almost.. funny, to hear her say Juliet. He realized, according to that one, terrible, wonderful night, when all his dreams came true and all of his nightmares surfaced at once.. that it would be easy for her to think he was still in love with her.

And the real question remained. Was he?

As she went on, her words sounded unnatural. There was wisdom in them - wisdom that she never had before. It was silly to hear her realize things on her own, instead of flop around waiting for the answer to come to her on a silver platter. He finally pushed himself up to a normal sitting position, and looked down at her when she felt silent.

"We weren't doing okay, kitten." He finally whispered out carefully. He didn't want her to leave in a burst of anger, so he tried to explain things to her gently. "We were actually pretty ******** up."

He let out a ghost of a laugh, and one side of his lips turned up in a smirk. "I was so hell bent on trying to make you see I could be what you wanted. I spent so many years of my life thinking about nothing but you. And you spent those same years.. well.." He took a deep breath, and let the next word out with his exhale. "Living."

His smirk was gone, and his lips turned down in a frown. "I wasted a lot of time waiting for you. And I almost destroyed everything with Petra, because I just kept thinking, one more chance, one more chance.."

He shook his head.

"But I was never going to be enough for you. You needed the world, not me. And I wish I'd realized it sooner."

His throat hurt. He knew he was going to cry any minute, if he didn't get out the one thing he needed to say, before Reine stormed off and left him again.

"I'm in love with your sister, kitten." He scratched out hoarsely. "And I promise you, that's never going to change."

"You were my best friend," she insisted, leaning against him. "I think we wanted each other to be more than that, for a bit, both of us. Silly, isn't it?"

They had both wasted time, probably- but it was all for the best. Reine had.. thought, so many times about just saying yes. It was that easy. It had always been on the tip of her tongue, but every single time she'd swallowed it back down, dismissing Robert with an airy wave of her hand and a laugh.

"I had to live," she retorted. "While I could. I had to be someone. When we moved, my mom said it was as good as a fresh start. That's when I started going by Reine, but I never told you, because I liked the way you said my name. Not anymore, though. That's gotta stop. Can't have you ruining my street cred, alright?"

Had she regretted it? Many times, but not anymore. It was strange- she hadn't wanted to be tied down by him- by just Robert, but now she'd tied her fate to this small island, and resigned herself to hunting monsters.

"That's all you need to know," Reine whispered, wrapping her arms around him.

"That's all I need from either of you. Because I couldn't be there for her- I didn't dare to be, but you were, and you always have to be, okay."

Robert felt her lean against him, and his eyes stung with tears. Why did she have to be so fickle, so bi-polar, so-

Ahh. So that's why I chose you.

Robert blinked, startled at Jezebel's sudden, very quiet admission. He couldn't understand what she meant, and this just wasn't the time to delve into it. Not when Reine was actually being civil with him.

He just listened, waiting for the moment when she said her goodbyes, so that his body went rigid with surprise when he felt her hug him. He didn't know how to react. He didn't know what to feel. All he knew was.. he was falling back into the same old traps, because it was too easy to just be happy in that one, simple moment.

"I will, kitten." His hoarse, emotional whisper choked out, as one arm dared reach around her for a hug. It stung to hold her, after so long. "I'll always be there for her. I promise."

"Yeah, you'd better."

She let him hug her, and they sat there in silence for a while, Reine remembering the old days. Oddly, the only clear bits of her memories were the times spent with Robert- her best friend, huh?

Maybe that time was already past- after all, after so many years, they'd changed so much. If Robert didn't know her now, she didn't know him either- did she want to? There was no real way of repairing what they'd both broken, but that didn't mean they couldn't start over again.

Standing up, she turned back to him and stretched out a hand.

"Reine Walker," she grinned. "Pleased to meet you."

Even if it was for one, final moment, Robert felt like they were in the past, sitting on his car, cuddled together and giggling like children. He took the moment, cherished it, and then.. let it go.

He took a deep breath, and sighed as all the pent up pain flowed out with it.

When she stood, he was ready. His eyes fell to the hand, and then back up to her. A sad little smile played along his lips, and his big hand reached out and wrapped around the little one offered in front of him. Still sitting there, he shook it, and introduced himself for the first time.

"Robert Morris." He murmured quietly. "Glad to know you."
