"I know it's practical, Weep," Rise said, half-attempting to sound rational but failing miserably in the presence of his childen, "but I just think they deserve better than that. After all, look at all the things we've made out of the swamp! Why, we're connoisseurs of everything the swamp can offer! It wouldn't be right," it seemed like good reason in his head. "it wouldn't be right to wean them on these weeds and nettles when just a little while away is what gives our lives meaning."

Fell was touched, moved, and impassioned by this beautiful speech. "Maybe," he said, fervently, "if we took...ripe fruit - and mashed it."

"Oh yes," Rise said, delighted by Fell's genius as always. "It would be most suited to their young digestive systems, and would certainly prevent choking." His childhood had very dark days.

Weep stared off into the distance, contemplating the alluring thought of dashing her brains out upon the nearest stone - oh, hang on. Very good, she would no longer have to withstand this torture alone.

Weep had not been far from the store, but the speed with which her 'Auntie' Fade had located her was thoroughly astounding. Did she want to come and visit babies? She was not sure. In fact - she was rather sure she did not, but in a way, she supposed, she was that little bit responsible for their existence (somehow), and the boss would be extremely crestfallen if he'd learnt that Fade had told dear Cue all about it and she had not come.
So she came.
"Oh, hello," she nevertheless began in vague surprise as she walked into the charming scene, "I'd thought they were yours and Grey's babies, Rise, I didn't realise she was surrogating for you two."
A brief (and helplessly sympathetic) glance at Weep confirmed that this cuddle had been going on for some time.

Rise chuckled, humouring Cue's little joke. "Cue my dear," he began, with other more pressing issues on his mind, "what did you eat when you were a foal?"

She blinked. "We killed things, mostly."

He paused, winced, considered her tone and concluded this part wasn't a joke. Well, Dark was a very skilled, pragmatic lady - it made sense for her children to be as rugged. That certainly wouldn't do for his children, he couldn't possibly taunt them in the middle of their luxury. "How does mashed mango sound to you?"

"It sounds wonderful to me," Fell contributed dreamily amidst the foals.

"Excuse me," Weep's voice started to fade away as she evacuated the makeshift nursery at an unnecessarily rapid pace, "I think I'm going to go kill something."

Cue stared at her receding form with not a little desperation. She did not quite want to be left here in the company of two googly-eyed bucks and a bunch of flimsy foals. In fact, she was just about to make some excuse and exit stage left herself - when the questions started up again.

Indeed, Rise had started up in rapture again, sighing dramatically as he exclaimed: "ah my little babies, I do wish you could tell me yourselves!" A warm smile at Cue - he had such a soft spot for the sweet little lass - and a flash of wonder. "Oh, oh Cue, do you remember when you started talking?"

"Early," she answered, abrupt, with the slightest hint of a trapped-deer alarm. Seconds later, the (woefully immature) pride took hold, and she elaborated with a smug smile, "I was the first to say my name. Death never got over that I beat him to it."

The esteemable boss of Rise and Co. found himself more excited these days than he'd ever been before. As his mind flitted from baby-related subject to baby-related subject, he pounced upon Cue's cue with enthusiasm. "Yes, names!" He said, staring at his clutch. "Oh their names! When do you think they'll say theirs? I would so love to know what their names are!"
