"What? O-oh. Alright..." Taryn mused. What was she supposed to say to that? She had been under the impression that exams involved sitting at a desk writing responses to essay questions. There was some serious rethinking to do all of a sudden. "Well, I'm glad you passed! You're already on your way up."
Of course, Roch had never mentioned wanting to be an exceptional reaper, or even his career gals (although she could guess). He had always been the good-times friend, the light-times friend. She kind of liked it. "So what's it like? To ride all over..." To be free.

"Your butt starts to really hurt after an hour or so, no matter how comfortable the bike seats are--" Someone snorted in the background, and it wasn't him. "You're stuck clinging to your old man, who smells like cighoulletes even when he isn't smoking, and more often than not you wind up sleeping in a too crowded room with a granddad that snores."
"Hey, now," Vegas said. "You're out like a light, how would you know I snore?"

Oh no! She wasn't on squeakerphone, was she? Oh, she'd just die.
"Who's that?" she asked, and then realizing that context told her just that. "Oh, um. Well that's not quite what I meant, but alright. I still think I'd like to try it some time." Another stupid thing to say. Taryn had been full of those as of late, and all in terms of--
"Not that... I mean..." The ghoul had stopped in the hallway, smacking a hand to her forehead in frustration. She caught a few strange looks from a pack of ghouls passing by. She ran a hand back through her hair and continued rushing up the stairs. "I don't expect to be on a motorcycle any time soon." A nervous laugh followed, and a span of silence. Hold yourself together, ghoul. You'd said one strange thing and were getting all in a tizzy. Just breathe. The silence was likely broken before Taryn spoke by the sound of her sleeve batting the phone as she felt her cheeks. "I'm glad you're enjoying yourself. When will you be heading home?"

"You should," Roch agreed. "Other than that stuff, it's awesome. I almost wish we could go longer, but I wanna get home in a couple of days or so. Tomorrow we're supposed to go to a concert by this Jimi guy, and then head towards the school the next day, I guess."
"Not quite," Vegas said. "But close enough."
"Huh?" Roch asked him.
"Nothin."

The little comments thrown in by grandpa were not all that reassuring. Where were they going to be taking Roch? She'd certainly like to see him before they sank him in the river, or whatever kidnappers did.
"That's good. I'll, um. I mean, I'll see you soon." She was in her dorm room now, locking the door behind her and stepping into the warmth. Aah~ "Text me if anything exciting happens, will you? It's pretty boring back here without you to start trouble." Roch wasn't the type to take 'I miss you' well, she imagined.

"Yeah, if I can get a signal," Roch agreed. "See ya, Taryn! When I get back, I'll have an entire LIST of flavors I want us to make. You should probably get ready for it now."
The punk. This entire conversation had just been to get cupcakes, Vegas was positive now.

Taryn hung up after their mutual goodbyes feeling a little lighter. Was it strange to have your best friend be a boil. No, right? It couldn't be...
